the most robotic, most detached joy division song... one of the most effective pieces on closer. it has the sense of inevitable doom totally accepted without even any feeling of regret.
This might be the most well-done individual song ever. The lyrics are distinctly of that of someone who is awaiting a tragic event which he anticipates will not be good for him--ie a passover. Plus, the music is even better. Can't you sense the reflection of a ghost or spirit passing by during the chord progression?
They sound like Green Day! (Before you give me a thum down. I will say you: It was a joke!)... why Ian? *sorry for my english, i'm just a fucking craut*

Dark downward spiral- beautiful. godlessKnowledge nailed it, that kind of music is crap. That might be giving it too much credit. Go find yourself some taste dip shits.
I'm listening to the most demonic production techniques I've ever heard, and some guy is so self-possessed that he parks himself in the middle of the screen. Unbefuckinbelievable.
i guess im too happy to get into the flow of joy division, never really found it as good as it should be, but its ok to knock your skull open to. ow brains!
musically closer is better than unknown pleasures, you can tell with the practice and time they produced, this was the music of joy division, the past songs are great but this was the end of the future and it was great, closer is alot easier to listen to, i find myself skipping tracks alot on UP bores me, closer rocks, Ians voice is amazing
Yeah, Closer is slightly better overall. But Unknown Pleasures still has some really great songs on it. Perhaps even a few that are better than anything on Closer.
"When the souls rise in the light of their joy, my soul ascends glorified by the dark of grief. I am like you, Night! And when my morn comes, then my time will end." Kahlil Gibran 1883-1931
I agree with iancurtis51880, this song is disturbingly eerie. Which is probably why it's my favorite Joy Division moment, especially the musical interlude after "I'll count up my beauties when all's said and done, I know that I'll lose every time"
A question. Does anyone know if Tony Wilson was ever in the pay of u2? I ask this, because I remember reading once where he was praising u2 as being the inheritors of Joy Divisions torch, or some bollocks like that. It was on the back of a book, I think. But it wouldn't surprise me if that person, i.e. the would be saviour of the world etc etc had "encouraged" him to say this, thus giving u2 the ultimate artistic status he so yearned / yearns for. Anyone know?
I have recently become intrigued by the possibility that the producer Hannet may have been the wonderful ingredient, and not Curtis. For though the wonderful lyrics were his, no doubt, I just think New Order are mortal. This band was untouchable - along with Syd Barrett, Joy Division, in my opinion represent the only two instances of genius, that overused word, in the popular music of these isles since electrification in music. The question is, was Curtis's epilepsy the genius, or Hannet?
Drums pattern are something... quite sexy, i don't know how to explain it
