I was intrigued when I saw a review of it (by Siskel & Ebert!) and when I was 16 or 17 my local public TV station showed a dubbed version. Like many others, it changed my life. I read the book, got the soundtrack, and let it inspire me. It remains my favorite film of all time; art, and love, and the love of art, triumphing in a world of ugliness and corruption.
I was 10 when it was realeased - And have never been the same again after seeing the movie a aouple of years after... a further step forward came with Betty Blue , as I was aged 14, and Subway... I can see all the gimmicky nuances and slick aestetics but they have been amazing experiences at the time, and stil are fully enjoyable films...
One of the films that turned me on to world cinema movies. also Subway( christopher lambert / isabelle adjani) and Delicatessen. Foreign films allways seem to have more story to them than hollywood. The subtitles help me with my reading and spelling, well not so far.....
Over the years I have found out that there are two reactions to this movie: one is that it makes no sense and is rather dumb. The other is that it changes the life of the viewer because of the beauty and music and colors. To me, I was never the same after I saw it and was lucky enough to see it re-released and color corrected back in 2007. Amazing...
One of the best movies I've ever seen. It's so much more than just a clever thriller :) The way it was filmed, the music, light, it all creates a great atmosphere. No shot is "accidental" in this movie - many scenes are pure works of art. Pure greatness, thank you Jean-Jacques Beineix!
I saw this movie in 1983 when I was 12. I didn't quite get it but I liked what I didn't get. I had the opportunity to see it again in the late 80's and liked it even more. I watched it again in the 90's and liked it even more. I now can see this film was way ahead of it's time. I saw it just recently and it's almost timeless. I can still easily get confused and place it being made 10 years later. Ditto on the appreciation of opera.
I turned 17 in 1981. This movie changed my mind about Opera, about foreign films, about life. With the money I made at my first job, I bought the soundtrack album and drove my family crazy. If you have never seen it, see it! --especially all you kids who think the 80's were so stylistically dreadful.
@nauort23 I was about 17/18 when I first saw the film at a cinema in London's Leicester Sq & straight after the film had finished I went & bought the sound track. Diva has always been one of my favourite films.
@harrynicholas haha agreed on all counts... a work of art.... and if they aren't impressed with your ultra coolness for choosing this for a first date then... well....
the soundtrack was the first CD I ever bought. What a shame there is so little of Ms Fernandez on YouTube. Wish I could get hold of the movie on dvd.....
love this film. i lived in paris in the 80s and used to go to all the places where they filmed it - galleries on the champs elysees, jardin de luxembourg, canal saint martin. and my french friend used to play the piano solo for me! no other film has as much style or atmosphere for me.
I love this movie so much. I don't even understand French, but I love to watch it without the subtitles--just see and listen. It's kind of everywhere at once.
I hated Opera before I saw this movie when it first came out [out of my own ignorance] Then, when I heard Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez sing this song , I'd thought i'd died and gone to heaven...... Sigh!
Thanks for posting. I would love to see the trailer for the original release. I remember it from 24 years ago as the best trailer I had ever seen. I wonder if I would think the same if I saw it again.
This is my top ten films ever, French or otherwise! lol! It's a beautiful, lush, romantic, dramatic, cool movie. Way ahead of its time. I'm excited because I'm finally getting to see it on the big screen for the first time this weekend! wooooo! Super Joules!
Saw it again the a couple of weeks back (yeah, I still own the old vhs) and it was every bit as fun as I recalled. A film that takes itself way too seriously, that has way too many elements and clichés than any one film should be able to contain...and, though that, it's a great experience.
the film was released in 1981, not 82.

My comments deleted was due to rewrite by myself.
My impression of this movie is that I was deeply impressed very much.
What a fantastic and beautiful movie it is!
In those days, I often went to the theater to see it.
And now, I've got DVD. However, I hope that I can see this movie at the theater, again.
And I bought the soundtrack, recently.
I recommend you to buy this CD.

One of the strangest concepts for a thriller. One of the best films ever. Great soundtrack. Go see it. And oddly a great film for a first date.

I'm not much for opera, but I like this aria, and it's not easy to sing well. This is an unusually good performance.
