I saw them at Metro in Chicago when this song came out (is it really over 20 years ago?). What a great show by a great band. The place just rocked with that affirmative energy you get at a really great rock show. I remember they did a killer version of "Maggie May" as their encore. I hope they're doing well these days.
... I remember buying this CD single from a now defunct (aren't they all?) record shop in Bletchley back when it was released....haven't heard it for the best part of 20 years, but that sounded just as great as I remember it. What a cracking slice of Indie Pop!....

Was it 'Hello' or 'Parachute' that was kept off Number One in Ireland by Miley Byrne from Glenroe's song 'Byroad from Glenroe'? Strange times. Tom Dunne (the singer)is now a presenter on Newstalk radio in Ireland Monday-Friday 9-12 mornings. Good Show too.
Yes! Great song! The last few weeks I was planning to search for SH on the net but kept on forgetting... I even completely forgot about this song, "parachute" still gets rather a lot airplay!
I took the chance to put their profile on worldmusicdatabase too!
A great Song ! From a great band ! Had the pleasure of seen them live many times ! Foo Fighters should cover this, bet it would be a worldwide hit !! ;-) . I cover this in my current band ;-)
I got this song from an irish penpal in the early 90's. There are some parts in the lyrics i can't understand. Could anyone be so gentle to send me the lyrics. i am a spanish native speaker.. hope you understand and be kind. i pretend to sing this song in my band... thanks in advance!. verucahate at hotmail dot com
The subtitle for this song used to be "Petrol". Ray reckoned that the chorus sounded like the band "That Petrol Emotion", again pre-dating Teen Spirit.
I saw these guys at the Stone Pony, Asbury Park NJ in 1991. Great high energy show. Yes, the chorus does reminded us of Teen Spirit. Some undertones of That Petrol Emotion's 1990's Chemcrazy album. Lots of great tunes from the 1989 - 1993 period....
Have to agree with ya about the irish comment! I wasnt into the pixies tho,my mate was, i liked Depeche Mode, The Stone Roses, The Cure, & The Mission, alot more mainstream i know !!!
Indeed. Everyone at my school collected Depeche Mode 12 inches, about 50 of us went to see the Cure in Dublin (complete with back-combed hair, lipstick etc.), did cover versions of Roses songs.
Not that keen on the Mission though, have to admit. We all adored the Pixies though (as well as the Wedding Present and Ride)
I never got to see the Cure live :( Did see DM,and the Stone Roses, have to say i do have This Monkeys gone to heaven on my you tube favourites.Check out the Roses - Tears...amazing song!!
I saw this band at the bottomline in NYC for this tour, I was floored, they were great, tons of energy and what a great song!!!!they were loud as well great harmonies. I loved this band!
I loved the album this is from, again when I was doing my inter cert. Reminds me, I lent it to a guy in my class at school and never got it back! I should have known better, he was notorious for borrowing stuff and never giving it back, lol.
Awesome I saw these guys live at the Bottom Line (a classic club in NYC that doesn't exist anymore). A great rock band without an ego that just rock the shit out of the house. I would love to fly to Ireland and see them do a revival show. And I'd like to take a hot latin lady to see it. Yeah, I'm 40 and old but this rock memory makes me feel good and young.

hello, what happened to what now? something happened to what now. I can not find it on youtube. it was one of my favorite songs in 91. great tune

This song and the album (Stuck Together With God's Glue) is some of the best rock and roll ever.
Even their next two albums (Bedlam A Go-Go/Alan, Elvis and Me) are terrific.
Another sad example of poor marketing, at least in the USA.
These guys should be HUGE.
Tom Dunne is a stupendous vocalist.

Dose anyone else think that the chorus to this sounds a bit like Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit? This pre dates Teen Spirit by a year.

Don't you think though; with bands like the pixies around, we cud have spent our time better? It was like 'great band given that they're Irish'
