i rarely use this adjective to describe an actor but Clift was a GENIUS. think about it. this is quite a long movie and Clift is in it for like 10 minutes and his performance is unforgettable. If i wanted to encapsulate the very definition of a perfect performance in 10 minutes i would use this. It just doesn't get any better than this and also lets not forget Maximilian Schell. He was incredible in this. I have to say though that i think Richard Widmark's performance is not very good in this.
the supremely talented montgomerey clift would have been half as masterful in this role, if he had played it before his disfiguring accident. his physical beauty simply would have been too distracting, i believe. we lost a great one in him...
@starmanskye That was a very informative and enlightening posting, and unfortunately, this entire page could be filled with the injustices that man has inflicted upon man in the name of politics, religion and warfare. Thank you for your comments...
everything got exciting when Monty entered the scene. what a performance that was. he was all modest, calm then get nervous, heartbreaking then went raged.
Actually, Ireland, Australia and Canada had widespread programs of sterilization and racially-based persecution adminstered by the Catholic Church and the state, in some cases extending into the 90s -- in which young single mothers were forced to turn their children over to Chuch-administered adoption, live and work in laundries or, for Native/Indigenous children, forceably removed from families and made to attend distant boarding schools that attempted to 'anglocize' them w/ harsh punishments.
To film fans, watch Montgomery Clift in "Red River "(1948, with John Wayne), and "A Place in the Sun" (1951, with Elizabeth Taylor). A very handsome actor with an extraoridnary talent. In 1957, an auto accident left him with severe facial injuries; it took years to recover and his career faltered, but in my opinion, he gave the best performance of his life as Rudolph Petersen...
painfully, painfully brilliant. He should have got the Oscar. I don't think this is actual transcript. It's a summary that is more accurate as a while because of Monty's performance.
Montgomery Clift and Judy Garland's performance was astounding in this dramatic character study, and I certainly agree, it's difficult to watch. Their performances were nominated for Best Supporting Actors at the Oscars, and they should have been co-winners...
What is especially great about Monty's performance is that he essentially made this up on the fly. Because of the state of his health, he couldn't remember his lines and both Kramer and Tracy just told him to fuck the lines and play to them.
If Petersen had been subject to the authority of Stalin, he would have probably been rounded up and "who knows what". Petersen's dad was a Communist and there is a good chance that even HE would have been axed.
@triptoheaveandho It's said that Clift was just coming off a week-long bender when he did his scene for this film. If so, it lends the scene that much more poigniency.

This performance by Mongomery Clift is just about the best example of screen acting you are ever likely to see. He is mesmerizingly brilliant.

Clift and Garland were terrific in this film. Especially Clift. What an astounding actor he was.

Are these questions and answers based on the actual transcripts of the trials? If so, are they verbatim?

And as ruthless as he was, everyone who downgrades Maximillian Schell as the defense attorney? Well, he won the Oscar for Best Actor...

This is a great movie, some explanation of why the Reich did what they did not justifiable but at least you have the background of why.

I want to beat that defense attorney within an inch of his life, which just goes to show you how good an actor Maximilian Schell is.

I think that Tom Hanks so admired Monty's performance that he "lifted" it, in large part, for "You-Know-Who" (Forrest Gump)!

It was hard to watch Clift give that testimony. It was like seeing a puppy getting kicked.

Se pasaron de listos, primero lo cortaron de los huevos y luego lo acusan de ser pendejo, solo falta que lo fusilen y lo incineren.

Montgomery should have gotten the oscar. I loved West Side Story but Clift was more deserving.

@cbgflygirl indeed. i almost cried at his whole testimony especially about his mother.

@cbgflygirl I have said this for years. I also believe Judy Garland should have won as well.

Montgomery Clift gets the closet to what real acting is. He's like a raw nerve. No one has ever and will never touch his genius.

u are a piece of shit that is trying to minimize the evil of the Nazis.

@bigleroygym The "evil of the Nazis" -is- minimal next to the stuff Stalin did; Communism killed more people than Nazism could hope to.
