Every time i hear this i think of my dad who was a awesome guitar player, and he loved reno and smileys music. My dad played so well that it was hard to tell them apart . Great video thanks for posting this.
Man, could Don Reno ever do that single-string work! Even Irv's rendition of "Alabam" is fun (why aren't there any tv shows and announcers like this today....too much damn "America's Got Talent".....hey, America, THIS is talent, for goodness sakes!!). Ah, "I'm Using My Bible for a Roadmap"....what a pretty song. Bless you Don and Red.
Wow love this stuff--I am a fellow banjo player--I so much respect Don Reno's playing--I had only small glimpses of it before--ty youtube! I really enjoy Red Smiley's low key singing--bluegrass--yet different. And a singing banjo player--awesome!
The piano player is Irv Sharp. He started with WDBJ when about 19 and worked there until he passed away at 78. Don't understand the fussin' about Don and Earl. I got to meet both back in the 50's/60's and they really liked each other and each others styles. Earl being so good and popular when Don got out the Army is reason for Don's great style. He told us he didn't want to sound like his good friend Earl Scruggs so he added two finger and other licks to what he picked up from Snuffy Jenkins.
Who's better, Don or Earl? Who cares! Both had their own styles and sounds, their own strengths and I'm sure glad because that provides a lot of variety for me to listen to. If they all sounded the same it would get boring. Go Don! Go Earl!
@TruegrassBoy Just ask God and that settles it. The Book of Proverbs, the Book of Solomon, says that lots (drawin or pickin lots) keeps arguments from happenin. The Moravians, missionaries to the Cheroquis in Dixie, made all their important decisions, by trustin that our God will intervene, in the choosin of lots. Much similar might have been the use, of the Urim and the Thummim. Noah began the I Ching, which uses a type of lots. Therefore, ask God, by lots.
That's just my opinion there's no reason for you to cuss me out but if you want to talk this thing out like men well see how bad you r just let ne know I'll even give you my phone number or we can meet somewhere.!!! Just let me know!
Ah! I knew "I'm Using My Bible for a Roasd map" would have to be in this string of clips somewhere, and here it is! That's a real favourite of mine -- i sing it all the time. Also, Part 4 of this series of clips answered my question about the pianist / annoucner -- his name is Irving Sharp.
known as "cousin irv" or mr. dr. pepper on wdbj in roanoke virginia, sadly,mr. sharp passed away at age 77 around 1992 or 93. he is still survived by his wife and children. mr. sharp is a class act all the way, wish we had more like him.
Beautiful banjo work on "Arkansas Traveller." I am still curious about the jazzy pianist / announcer, with his solidly 1920s repertoire of tunes. Who is he?
CLASSIC!!!
