  • Brilliant, my absolute favourite version but the dancing from the bassplayer! I mean come on, not one comment about that. It's so cheesy.

  • I was 23 when I saw them live in London. I still listen now to the entire album. simply pure musical brilliance.

  • 0:51 - 1:07 sixteen seconds of perfection ;)

  • I seriously love Mark's lead guitar style

  • Can you imagine if a band today went to their record label and radio programers and and played a 10 minute song that has high and lows (and even moments of silence) like this. They wouldn't get past the receptionsist.

Then came churches, Then came the schools, then came the lawyers. Then came the rules.

  • The year changed. From part one. Interesting.

  • Just love Dire Straits, and thisis the best thanks for sharing it

  • 4 people are mindless vegitarian gay zombies

  • my first tape was a dire straits one and this song was on it and was my favorite guess its been 15 years i didny listen this song i really got emotioned

  • aLCHEMY was THE reason i wanted to make music myself!!! Incredible!!

  • Most songs, the more you listen to them, seem to get duller, this is the opposite.

It thrills even more everytime you listen to it

  • fkn AMAZING ...............\m/

  • Stunning Guitar work, and as for the keyboard .......well amazing: the octave + Spans and the amazing glissando'. Excellent counter-point guitar.

Goes back to the days when muscians could actually PLAY their instruments.

  • fantastic

  • such an unassuming mother f*****r as Mark Knopfler giving perhaps the greatist live performance..at least of what I've witnessed. Our Lord said.."THE MEEK Shall inherit the World. Go...Go...Go Mr Knopfler. Make it seem easy

  • 29 seconds into part 2 and I'm wasted..Idon't need a single drug...I do not have to have a single drink...Shit....these guys seemed to project their JOY as they played. Seems I wasted a few days in the past as I'm sure I could have seen them go at it.........................Dang.....Go Mark Go>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

  • lol john was doing the duck walk in this movie :-) dire straits for ever;-)

  • aLCHEMY is re-released on blue ray + standard dvd on 15th May 2010- uk.

In widescreen , remastered with extras and 5.1 surround..should be awesome !

Quality will be superb and way way better then all previous versions...

  • guitarwonder Mark Knopfler!!!!!!

  • Terry Williams had the raw power and energy,,,,, Chris Whitten, Chad Cromwell, Danny Cummings all have a bit of it but Terry was the reason i got into the straits!!!! This live LP was / is my life#!!!!!!

  • Great band: MK, definitely one of the best 5, Terry williams a hell of a drummer, and alan clark a very good pianist,

  • magic

  • 5 *****

  • awsome!!!!

  • The best R&R song ever, bar none...Amazing!!!!

  • Esta parte es de lo mas grande que existe en musica. Impresionante, maravilloso, extasis completo.

Knopfler vuelve con los dire. Estas traicionando a los fans de dire straits.

This part is larger than what exists in music. Awesome, wonderful, complete ecstasy.

Knopfler returns with dire. These betraying fans dire straits.

    Ainda vos hai cousas.

  • Almost every Dire Straits ever recorded fades out slowly. I was wondering how they were going to pull this off live.

  • with a blast :P

  • What's written on his shirt? :P

  • They are Alchemy arrows.

  • whatever man. as i've already said- british, welsh, scottish, american, taiwanesse it doesnt matter. as a band they are awesome and thats all that matters. and as a side note hal lindes was in the band for a grand total of 2 years before leaving. illsley was there from beginning to end and terry williams was there for 6 years. if you cant keep your rascist, illiterate rubbish of youtube then seek help

  • American, Englisg, ... what it's the point. Music is great.....

  • Dude, you have messed everything up in your mind. Chill out, drink a coffee and stop smoking pot.

  • did he need a reason? it was the 80's dude- lycra was big back then. and i wouldnt exactly call john illsley ugly. he'll never win any awards but it didnt stop him being a great basist. whats the problem you people have with him anyway? MK might have been THE GREATEST GUITARIST EVER! but illsley stuck with him for 13+ years. he musta done something right

  • Interesting point about John Illsley - he was great friends with artist Brett Whiteley - I first heard this song on a 60 Minutes segment about Brett, during which he was painting to it - and the name of the tour, the name of the double live album emanating from it, and the painting used for its cover, is Alchemy, by .. Brett Whiteley!

Love the studio version - where I was living once someone across the road played it, the full 14 minutes plus, six times straight one sunny Saturday afternoon!

  • when i posted my first comments i didn't own the love over gold album so i'd never heard the studio version of T.graph road. now i do and its my fave. it only has 5 tracks but every one is awesome. its slightly amusing to see that the live version of TGR is shorter than the album version- they're both great tho.

Hmm six times straight you say? well i couldnt think of anything better- especially since TGR got no radio airplay, being 14 mins long.

  • I remember buying the album when it came out. I had become a DS fan with "Makin' Movies", one of the best albums ever. But walking back to the dorm with LOG, I was kind of pissed that there was only 5 songs on it. I felt I had been ripped off. But then I played it.....and was blown away. Amazing piece of work.

  • I wasn't unhappy either! A cousin of mine, who has gone on to do animation for Disney, saw Return of The Jedi about 25 times at the cinema, which I couldn't understand until later when I started playing my favourite songs on repeat for hours on end. I heard that when Dobie Gray's Drift Away came out there was a DJ who pronounced that all songs should be like Dobie's, and proceeded to play it on repeat for 24 hrs straight!!!

  • have you had the chance the listen to the Money For Nothing greatest hits album version of TGR? its a mixture of the alchemy live version and the studio version. its the best version of it you'll ever find aside from actually getting to see it live. its absolutely brilliant.

  • I have! It was my first ever Dire Straits album (im only 16) and that remix of TGR is amazing BUT it cuts of the last 1.20 secs of the song ( the ending + 10secs

    appluase)

  • john illsley was actually a pretty good lookin guy. he had style in the 80s, the girls liked him

  • sorry, sub-Question:

what's the name of the drummer?

Is he still around? Very fit, handsome guy.

They say the drummer is the fittest in a rock band, never mind he sits down .

I take it he is Not british, hopefully. jOhN I. is making a fool of himself with his ridiculous jumping about, better be frozen/cold-british like Mark ! In fairness it's not easy for a (brit) man to "dance" but someone should have told him to stay still or learn SEXy moves like the guitarist on the Right !

  • His name is terry williams. Yeah he's still around, look him up on wikipedia. technically he's welsh. oh and john illsley might be jumping around to keep in rhythm. hope that helped!

  • hey whats wrong with British people anyway?! being english, welsh, scottish or irish doesnt matter if the band play well together!

  • why dont you stop makin stupid fkn comments on every dire straits/mk post on you tube, every time i click on something one ov your totally wank comments fkn spring's up,do you even know what youre on about????cos i fkn dont.......

  • ...and the guitarist on the right is an American. It doesn't matter what they look like, just listen to it :)

  • Comment removed

  • It had arrows oddly enough- two pointing at each other, two pointing away. that's the concert logo. nope dunno why

  • Why isn`t this available on DVD???? :(

  • cuz it originally came out in 1983. thats a bit before dvd's. the cd didnt really take off till brothers in arms was released 3 years later. i also wish they'd release it on dvd

  • they'll probably remaster it eventually

  • Remastering takes the charm away from the licks mate in my humble o.

  • an epic peice of music....simply awesome

  • undoubtedly the best version of telegraph road

  • I think they can hang on the claim for 5 more years... after 30 years the right expires i think.
