Im thinking about buying a 1999 SHO, but i hear that they have camshaft problems.. is this a common thing with those cars? gimmie some feedback please!!
@discosuitDan The camshaft problem is the "gears" tend to slip out of phase and eventually fail. The problem can be fixed by welding the gears onto the shafts. Aside from that they are pretty good cars. The coil packs can be problematic and sometimes difficult to find but the rumble of a v8 is worth a little time under the hood.
@discosuitDan. SHOs have their place and finding someone to weld your cams and/or determining whether the car your buying has welded cams can be difficult. You still will have to deal with cooling that transmission down. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a 1991Gen1 SHO or a Gen2 SHO. If you have a little more money (like $6k) go check out the Nissan Maxima SE. You get more HP and you get a stock LSD which will cost you about $6k to buy/install into a Gen2/3 SHO. You'll be glad you did. Trust!
..........actually the 3rd gen SHO's only came in auto, so that does not play a factor, also, an engine performs better when cold? lol, yea, that's kinda wrong there buddy
@havinthangs55 when i start my car in the morning and punch it it picks up much faster then after driving it half an hour. that also happens to my auto tech teacher with his truck. and he is a master mechanic
@cotas555 im pretty sure thats not correct. if your intake is right on the exhaust manifold, it might, since youll be drawing warmer air when its hot, but normally, engines have more power when warm
@adamberg666 they may be sportier (an MTX does that) but they are about the same in a straight line. and the v8 sounds Awesome! but the V6 looks Awesome!
too bad they couldnt give the v8 the same intake design or a manual, now that would be beast!
Actually, there is at least one V8 with the helmholtz resonating intake manifold. I saw a picture of it. It didn't look as good as the v6 does but supposedly it made 300hp with factory ECU, intake and exhaust. The current tranny can't hang with that and also they said they couldn't keep it cool. They should have done more to cool the ATF besides that sorry, single pass ATF cooler.
Hey dude ! Just noticing your dash looks exactly like my 97 T-Birds ! I would love to have that 150 mph speedo in my car ! As a matter of fact, I wouldn't mind just putting your whole dashboard in my car. lol !
Manual shift it to 7100. The 97 will chirp the tires on a 1-2 shift if you pull it down from drive to second at about 6500 which will make it shift at about 7100. Then wind second out to 7 grand at about 85 before shifting back into drive. You will cut off about a second of time. Mine has ALL the limited bolt ons and aftermarket available you can throw at it though plus a 75 HP dry Zex system used sporadically when car is taken out of storage.
my dad bought one new in 99, black with tan leather... 8 months later when the mom found out what it realy was he had to sell it....... want one back!!
@gearhead291 I know my '99 2V V6 temp gauge is off by a good margin. It has been low for a long time, dealer checked out OK, engine is up to temp and heat is fine. Further replacement and diagnosis will be over $500 mostly for labour... no thanks. lol

Uhh, yah I know what motor my SHO had. There were 3 SHO motors actually. 3.0 v6 for the MTX cars, a 3.2 v6 for the ATX and the 3.4 v8.

I got about an 8 second count from 0-60, which isn't too bad, but still kinda weak
judging from your temp guage, I'm guessing it wasn't warmed up yet?

engine's cold. this might b faster if you warmed it up first.

@pepene93 nope. an engine performs better when its cold

pepene93 1 year ago
@pepene93 when an engine is cold you have more compression wich equals more power. when its hot you lose compression because the block expands.
cotas555 1 year ago
@cotas555 that doesnt make sense. unless you come up with some proof or reliable source, ill have to dismiss it as bs.

A XCT tune will bump up that redline and get rid of that annoying pause after 80MPH. Mine was hitting the 2-3 shift just past 80MPH today.

Is there something wrong with your SHO? Only revs to 6k? I got a 99 SHO and it will wind out to 7k.
foamybubbles79 3 years ago
i know it revs closer to 7k in first but def not in second. dont know.. maybe something wrong with mine, but maybe yours..
boredru 3 years ago
hrmm, possibly might be something wrong with mine. If it wasent icy out I would go take it for a drive and see how it shifts.
foamybubbles79 3 years ago
The 99 SHO has a different gearing ratio. 96-98 has 3.77 gears, while the 99 has 3.91 gears.
mooserack99 3 years ago
@boredru try replacing your speed sensor.
hyacinthjewell 1 year ago
@boredru its hard on them to do this while there still cold
Bajaheat 8 months ago
The gearing is all the same, 3.77. 2nd gear has speed limited shift point far from redline for the grandmas that will never drive this car.
The 98+ duratec powered taurus got 3.98 final drive gearing.
