The lute certainly was not a guitar like instrument, apart from the fact it has strings and frets. the guitar originates from another early instrument and follows a slightly different evolutionary path.
The lute was not confined to the medieval era, was used in the Baroque era
Will Kemp was a Shakepearian actor who for a bet danced from London to Norwich (80 odd miles) in 1580..He did it in 9 days. This celebrates this event!
A lute was a guitar like instrument back in the medieval era. It was used mostly by entertainers in the royal courts and such. That is when this tune became popular. It was probably established as a set in stone song by Will Kemp, before that it was just a popular tune.

Actually, this song was named after him, however, the actual tune was an old medieval lute tune, much before his time.

The song was popularised by Will Kemps dance, and like many other tunes predates his time. What do you mean by medieval 'lute' tune?.
A similar tune is called 'The Parliament' and varies only slightly.
