@CallieMulan The documentary (Dreamweaver) was filmed for 7 years leading up to the Beijing Olympic Games ... The director picked 3 gymnastic girls at least since beginning of 2004, because there were footage of them at the selection camp and also footage of them watching Liu Xiang winning gold at 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

@tumbleandbumble Yes, it's possible, If you have the natural talent and work ethic! Look at He Xuemei (1992 Olympian) and Ludivine Furnon (1996 & 2000 Olympian)...both of them started gymnastics at age 11, just like you, and made it to the Olympics four years later. It's a very rare accomplishment, but not impossible!
@smile0meter Thanks :) There isn't really a set age that you have to be to start. Most girls who reach the world-class level start pretty young, typically between ages 4 to 6. Although you could start even younger than that...many U.S. gyms offer classes for toddlers and even infants!

in this montage as well as several others I've seen of Chinese gymnasts in training (as well as in other clips of training regimes in other nations which support/sponsor athletics) all the girls in training look like they're absolutely miserable, which begs the question: Do these girls even ENJOY the sport in which they toil so hard or are they forced in to it by the state with under the impression that their performance and scores will bring honor and glory to their families and nation....
@jhilleyful That's a good question! I know the vids you're talking about, but I've also seen plenty of footage in other vids of the Chinese gymnasts enjoying themselves, smiling, and having fun. Not to mention that there are vids of American gymnasts crying and looking miserable, too. I think for many athletes, worldwide, it's often a love/hate relationship - sometimes you love it, sometimes you hate it and want to quit. Each gymnast has her own story, and the final answer should rest with them.
i was a gymnast for 20 years. stopped doing it coz of back injury.

@GyMnaddict No problem :) Yes, there are gyms all over China where they train and compete at the lower levels. These gyms feed into the higher level Provincial teams, which in turn feed the National team.
@gregorygutkin It's different for each individual, but usually the first thing is to finish up their education. Then it's whatever they choose to do...many of them go into coaching or other sports-related careers. Gymnastics teaches you so many valuable lessons for life (the value of hard work, discipline, overcoming fear, etc) that these girls are usually very well-prepared and successful wherever life takes them.

i wonder like how do they all study and get a proper education because gymnastics only goes up till their about 20 or so max and thats still very young they need a job after gymnastics i mean cmon they wont have any future if they dont, and also what about those poor children that didnt get selected to take part of the olympics what happens to them? all those 13 years of intense training is put to waste D:

good motange. Personally (i'm entitled 2 a opinion) i think they are forced and pushed 2 hard. Imagine training everyday all day away from ur parents from 3 years old to 16. I would quit. It wouldn't be fun for me. Great vid though
That is why there are not that many people can be world champion. You give up something to gain something, you just wanna ask yourself if it is worth of you doing it.
Oh my God, I loved that! I almost cried... those girls worked so hard! I'm glad that they were able to have the joy of winning the gold in their own country as well.
i agree. i think their win was well deserved. especially for the first time! in their own country! that moment made there whole gymnastics career. i wouldnt have had it any other way.

This is superb! You've really captured the tough path these gymnasts have to follow to produce the routines we watch with awe. I'm so glad the Chinese girls got their reward in Beijing and was privileged enough to see Deng in London last week, she's fab. Thank you! ;)

good motange. Personally (i'm entitled 2 a opinion) i think they are forced and pushed 2 hard. Imagine training everyday all day away from ur parents from 3 years old to 16. I would quit. It wouldn't be fun for me. Great vid though

i agree. i think their win was well deserved. especially for the first time! in their own country! that moment made there whole gymnastics career. i wouldnt have had it any other way.
