I had this game instead of Contra III.

I didn't even know what Contra was back then,and I was like,7 or something.

We were living in europe. (Germany)

I remember,I walked with my mom in some wierd store and I some some SNES games.

I looked around them,and I saw this.

I really wanted it,and it remains one of my favorite games.

I like it more than Contra III,simply because I grew up with it,and the original didn't exist over here.

Personally i prefer the probo intro better than the contra one. When lance bean (or was it bill?) has his face at the camera (?) it gets really corny.

@Sparklette Though I'll probably get flamed for this I don't see what wrong with playing with robots. In fact, while the original Contra characters are pretty damn badass, having robots just makes more sense to me. imo they fit better with the music, weapons, vehicles and the atmosphere. Also, it reminds me of Turrican.

However, though I haven't played many I really can't imagine the other games in the series with robot replacements.

This game is fucking classic. Here in the UK it was Probotector. I played Contra with the blokes in it too and they are pretty much identical and both ace.

Tough game to beat on the hardest setting too.

The reason why the the Game was renamed and the characters were changed is because Konami was worried about violince in Europe OR they feared Germany's so-called "Bundesprüfstelle",

I know this is a late reply But its cause of Germanys laws that forced a sprite change on all the contra games or not be released in Europe. And to not release a game there and release everywhere else would hurt Konami on major sales.

Well, thank you Germany for blessing Europe with PROBOTECTOR. I grew up with PROBOTECTOR and I could never even imagine going back with testosterone commando dudes like they had in CONTRA. In the end they're both cool, it just depends wich one we grew up with.

Ahh the memories! Completed it on hard mode in 2 player but took me and my buddy fucking ages too.

Classic, I played this version too being an english cunt lol.  I prefer the horizontal levels to the vertical ones.

I have the Megadrive version with the different levels and characters too - both awesome and both hard as nails!

to be honest, it was the europeans who are responsible for this. thing is their censorship standards forbid humans killing humans, strangely they find robots killing robots ok (this also applies with a Commando bootleg called Space Invasion)
