I visited Middlesbrough for the first time this September (to appear in a one-night stand at The Middlesbrough Theatre), and it was an absolute must for me to visit this extraordinary engineering feat next morning before heading back south.
Miracle it still work? One tower was built an inch or two too low. Result is that the bridge is twisted - and that the wheels wear unevenly. It's perfectly safe!
It was a lot worse in the sixties. I loved this bridge .For a hapeny you could go up the stairs and over the top .Me da took me and me brother one day and the two of us were hanging over the rail and laughing our heads off at the drop . I was back in 89 and it was fenced off ,too bad.
it were a penny when I was a nipper. I'd nick half a crown out of me mams purse and me and David Owen would go for the day to Middlesbrough Always loved that bridge It's a miracle it still works
The idea behind the bridge was to build a structure that was high enough to allow the large ships of the day to pass, but this would have meant too high a trek for passengers and vehicles at the time. This was the solution. It came at the end of a great era of bridge building in the UK and was a great feat of engineering at the time.
Years ago it used to be a penny to walk across the top (one of my relatives was a conductor there), until too many committed suicide up there. You need to get special permission now.
the town is getting better - but then I'm not a smoggy. There are a lot of places I wouldn't live in - and the bridge still looks good. Thanks for viewing the video

My mum is going to walk over the top - rather her than me it's a bit too high for my liking. You can bungee jump too.

Nice video, but why not build a normal bridge?

Worst in the UK according to Channel 4 recently. Personally I think Hull's worse - I'm Hull born and not proud of it!

at least Hull will be under the sea with global warming!

Your English is goo. Where is your transporter? The Middlesbrough bridge isn't close any more to the town. It is a super structure
