ok, i´m thinking of building my 2. guitar, i want to build tele, but instead of using 25 1/2 scale, im thinking i might go with the 24 3/4 scale, some opinions?
@4SuitsAction ive spent about 2500 on mine but ive got alot of custom options and some really great people working with me ... but my next guitar ive planned around 1000 ... it all depends on who your working with, and how you want it to turn out
@southparkrools Thanks for asking. The server was baught out and the new server didn't support the website so I need to construct a new site but I have been to busy. It will be back before the year is out. Thanks again
@guitarslf132 You need to know where you want to mill first of all, Depending on what type of jig you would center it. But without knowing what you are talking about that is a hard question to answer. Stew Mac frets are all made to be installed in a .23 slot.
@guitarslf132 Busy, it takes a lot to build and make a video of a guitar. I have built quiet a few guitars since the first video, also it seems to me that not a lot of people are interested.
So, big question. I'm about to start this project and I want to use a bridge I took off of my nephew's guitar (it's a vintage-style trem), and I'm using a PRS scale (25"), so would I measure out 25" from the nut and the lay out the bridge across that line to about the halfway point that I can adjust the saddles, and then lay out my template from there?
Now I understand that we can't simply match different guitar and body. They have their own measurement. Both lenght from 12 fret to the the bridge and 12th fret to the nut need to be equal. Otherwise it will be out of tune after 12 fret, even the saddle cannot compensate it. Anyone got any answer to retify it or the guitar will be such a waste?
@flymyv Are you saying that you stuck a neck on a guitar with a different scale length? If so, the only thing you can really do is move the bridge to accommodate it.
hey man, i was wondering if putting lots of grain filler on the different types of wood would stop them from contracting or splitting apart.. if not, i need to know which way you have to put the grain so that they don't break apart when they are contracting.
@1996PhYcOmExIcAn Use Hardwood, Ash, Alder, Maple, mahogany, Etc. On big bodied exotic guitars I've used Basswood because it is light, with a hardwood top. Prices very, it depends where you live and your supplier. Two or three piece bodies keeps the guitar from warping or cupping. Good luck with your build.
Awesome guitar man. I'm building my first one soon and I'm wondering if you could please answer a question I have: For a poplar wood body, can i just apply the primer, then the coloured lacquer after or do I have to apply a grain filler or saning sealer?
@r7mart The nut needs to be high enough so it can be slotted for the strings. When slotting the nut you need to make sure each string rests just above the first fret. the closer with out touching the better. Strings that are to high off of the fret will play sharp because you are stretching the string when applying pressure.
I noticed that the video didnt show you finishing the neck at all. If I were building a guitar constucted form one whole peice (e.i. neck-thru construction), how would I go about the finish?
@rockster07 I am trying to make the videos shorter so I leave some things that repeat such as finish on a neck. You would finish a neck through the body the same way as just a body. Good luck with your guitar.
@cjscanlon0205 The sustainer cost me $100.00 but that was a great deal, a store closing. But I'm sure you can find a kit on the internet or Fernandez web site. If you has worked with wood before you should be able to build a guitar if not it is going to take some practice. but if you take your time you will probably do a good job.
@guitwild hey I want to build a guitar using the fernandes sustainer kit but I was wondering if the kit is good for humbucker pickups like EMG. I'm also having trouble figuring out how to connect the kit to the 1/4" jack, the pickups, and the tremolo bridge. It would be greatly appreciated if you could answer me. Also could u put a video on how to make semi hollow guitars please I wanna build one for my grand father thx.
ok so i wanna have my own shape of the body. if i draw a random shape to my body..will that effect nything? cuz i have the necka and everything measured....but i wanna know if the shape of the body matters????
@cuziblack123 The hardware shouldn't be that heavy, it should be fine, and even if it is off balance, you can compensate with the position of the strap buttons.
I'm building a bass with ebony-fingerboard and african padouk-neck...Do i need to do any stain-filling of the padouk and oiling of the ebony before i glue them together, or can i do it after?
@Diabolik771 why does everyon like gibsons so much? they lack durability and all their guitars are made with the same pick ups and tuners they also lack origionality with that being said. the only different guitar they have ever made was the les paul jr and that was only because it was a single pick up with no tone. if you want a guitar get a jackson or an ibanez. atleast they all have different hardware, and flexibility, they also dont weigh a ton.
Hey Perry, thanks for the video's learning all I can before attempting my own guitar. I've been researching this for some time now. I must say I'm not so sure about the masking tape over the truss channel. I'd be worried about ruining all that hard work in planing the bottom of the F board and neck true having the tape protrude up about it's own thickness. Have you ever run into any trouble with this meathod? Anyways thanks for the vid's I appreciate it! Cheers, IC.
Great video, I learn lots of little things and over all a clean way to do some not so simple things, very tidy work, the guitar you built looks the money. And hey the guitar playing is cool very Jeff Beck... among others.
Thanks a million man, especially for introducing me to that Fernades Sustainer system. I'm planning on building guitars as a hobby at first, maybe sell a few, but who knows, could turn into something more. 5 stars all the way!
I want to know if i can install the Fernandes Sustainer system in a ibanez style guitar im builing. I dont know how im going to connect the middle pickup nor do i know if it will work.....
when you trace the heel of the neck onto the body, do you cut inside that line, on the line, or outside the line..??? thanks again... I learn or I'm learning alot from your vid(s)
This is a great video!!! What can you do with transparent paints? Example, Peavy uses A LOT of transparent paints for their designs. Any tutorials on this subject or great Guru?
The paint I use is a transparent water based paint that can be purchased at any art supply store. It is primarily used with an air brush. Seal the wood with a clear coat, apply paint when you achieve the correct paint job you must seal it with a clear coat. The cool thing about this paint if you don't like the result you can wash it off and start over.
I have seen few of your videos... I am curious about on thing... I have seen many guitars that have transparent paint, How do you paint a body using this type of paint? Peavy is a good example of this type of finish. Great videos El Guru!!!
i have built three guitars and your videos would have been a big help on the first two and the third one turned out great i am working on another one right now and ive noticed you never glue the truss rod all the way in, just silicone the ends do you glue it and just not show it or what? 5 stars
THank you for the kind words. The truss rod is not glued that is the reason I cover it with masking tape. The truss rod needs to be free and the silicone keeps it from rattling.
so just a tight fit and some silicone on the ends is all you need wow i have been doing it wrong by epoxying the whole truss-rod j channel into the neck (i make my own truss-rods from your awesome how to video) also this guitar had gw0004 on it this is only the fourth one you've made?
Self Taught, Started in High School led to repairing Guitars at Grizanti Music Store in Niagara Falls, N.Y. The more you work with guitars the more you learn. There are schools for Luthiers
The best is to buy well dried wood, not from a diy store.
I built a hardtail neck-through guitar and i connected the ground wire to the bridge by carving a very tiny channel starting from the bridge screw that's closest to the electro cavity. That channel was 5mm long, not more so it's entirely under the bridge and is invisible. Then I drilled an oblique hole from the and of the channel, to the cavity with a 3mm bit.
