So wait. My dad's first cousin is my first cousin once removed. But that's if we're looking at it from the relationship in their generation. But if looking at it from the relationship between me and my second cousin (my dad's cousin's son), then my dad's cousin is my second cousin once removed?

I'm thinking that the "removed" piece only works generating downward from the original ancestor . . . not back up. That would be way too confusing.

that's a great observation. but I'm guessing (and only guessing) that you always have to start from yourself. you would share your grandparent with that person and would therefor be second cousins, and the generation gap makes it once removed. so your first case would be false.

People your parents cousin is your 2nd cousin once removed.Your cousins cousin is your 2 nd cousin the number part relates to how far you have to go to reach a common ancestor.So if someone has the sane great grandparent as you that's your 2nd cousin

Almost. Incest is for parents, siblings, and kids. Cousins don't count. In fact, America is one of the few places that still believes marriage to first cousins is creepy and wrong. (An idea pre-dating modern genetics.) The odds of a birth defect from marriage to a cousin only goes up by 1 to 2%. So I guess hooking up with your cousin won't produce a kid with buck teeth that plays the banjo. About 26 states in the US allow cousin marriage including CA but not KY oddly enough.
