Cantonese is more closer to Middle Chinese than Mandarin, because it's an ancient Chinese dialect older than Mandarin that was spoken during the Tang dynasty.

Cantonese is similar to Korean and Japanese in the way we say a lot of things like he word 日is pronounced as Ngit(similar to Nyit) in Toisan and is pronounced as Nip in Japanese.

Hence, Nippon (Japan) in Japanese is more similar to Nyit Pun in Cantonese, which is different from Ri ben (Mandarin)
