You are either a racoon or a fox...I think it's a racoon...the Kanooki suit doesn't happen until a different world.........don't ask me how I know that. I LIVED this game when I was 8......

It's racoon and Tanooki suit. The abilities of the racoon and Tanooki are identical except that the Tanooki suit also lets you turn to stone (I think by holding down and the run button), which can destroy some enemies who would be indestructible otherwise.
