Monica has beaten Chris at Houston a few months before. Therefore many people have expected she would do it again at the Open. But the tennis of Chris was too smart, and she has kept up her concentration for the whole match. I mean it had costed too much mental power, and therefore she lost against Zina in the Quarterfinal. In any case, one of the best performances of her great career.
Another thing i like about Chris is the things she has to say in interviews even in short interviews like the one at the end of this clipe. She seems like a more intelligent player than most. Thanks for posting this.
I love you, Chrissie!!! You're my favorite female tennis player of all time...We miss you, Monica. Funny how they're playing with the two greatest & most popular rackets of all time. Evert: Wilson Pro Staff Original Kevlar. Seles: Prince Original Graphite (POG). OMG I remember that ballboy with the mullet so vividly. Note the lack of a service speed display. Check out Donald & Ivana Trump standing and applauding at the end of the clip.....
I remember the build up to this match - where commentators and analysts hailed Seles as the next Evert. Seles would prove great and I wish she and Graf had more time to battle it out, but there will never be another Chrissie. The machines of today haven't the heart, the grace and definitely NOT the talent. Evert, Graf and Navratilova FOREVER!
A fascinating match tactically. Evert at 34, played it positionally as though it were 1975 wood racket tennis and trounced Seles who played like it wasn't. Monica stood right on the baseline and took the ball on the rise and pounded for winners and angles Evert stood 4 feet back, stroked on the descend and killed her with accuracy depth and patience.
@BTURNER1961 Even back then Monica's weekness was her movement. Which is why weaker players like Evert or Hingis could dominate them, they are great movers of the court.
@dinh Absolutely, Evert's footwork was under appreciated by viewers who rarely saw it as the focus of analysis, so enamored were they, with the explosive bursts of speed achieved by Graf or Navratilova, Mandlikova or Garrison. Commentators always concentrated on the Evert stroke or shot selection but not her footwork. Both Hingis and Evert had a knack for anticipating the upcoming shot, the superb preparation and flawless balance once in position.
It's too bad Chrissie let Garrison off the hook in the next round. I have no doubt she'd have beaten Martina in the semis. Martina's nerves were shot, and she wouldn't have handled the pressure of Chrissie's last US Open well. *sigh*
Yeah, I mean Martina had dropped only nine games in five matches to reach the semis, and beat Manuela Maleeva 6-0, 6-0 in the quarters before beating Zina Garrison for the nth time.
amazing how seles lost a set to henrickson in this us open a year later at wimbledon seles beat her 6-0,6-0 in the 4th round, and henrickson is a serve and volleyer whose best surface is grass.
Not really all that amazing considering that the set Monica lost was the first set of her first match at her first US Open... I'd say she was definitely feeling some nerves. Luckily she settled down and won the next two sets quite easily...
This was an amazing U.S Open. Evert and Seles playing in the round of 16. Graf and Navratilova in the final. Such amazing players at all various points in their career.
I think Monica was going through an awkward growth spurt here. She looks like her body is working against her.

How lucky we all are that these two greats managed to intersect if only for a short time.

I love both these girls. How cool it is that they met in 1989 when Chris was finishing up a fantastic career and Monica was just starting.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Monica made the mistake of trying to outbore Chris Evert, the queen of lullaby tennis. Naturally, Monica was bored off the court :)

That was the last time that Chrissie played like Chrissie.

you can see Monica was a bit wild here, still honing her craft. Great match by Chris as I recall

WORK CHRIS!!!!!

It had been 20 years, since Chrissie retired. That's 2 years prior to Seles' dominance until she got knifed in the back.
