I very much enjoy these lectures but it strikes me as rather unhelpful to build-in Mesopotamia and Egypt into a 'Western Civilization' narrative. Influence is something else. I very much enjoy these lectures but it strikes me as rather unhelpful to build-in Mesopotamia and Egypt into a 'Western Civilization' narrative. Influence is something else. Personally, I find the Spenglerian lay out of civilizations as much more helpful than an Ancient/Medieval/Modern model. The West was highly influence by Classical and Arabic cultures but that is a very different thing from considering them all the same thing.
