This guy is the reason I am a KC Chiefs fan, specially growing up in PA. Remember him in Super Tecmo Bowl? Unstoppable. Then just started following the Chiefs ever since.
Eventually Derrick Thomas, became my fav. player. What a tragedy would have liked to see him end his career on his terms and continue working with his third and long foundation. Glad they didn't postpone his HOF induction.
@PharaohNnamdi I believe they mean "Ibo", one of the 3 largest ethnic groups in Nigeria. Nigeria is the most populous and one of the ethnically diverse countries in Africa.
Scouts should go to Nigeria, like soccer scouts do. ya they never played, but it doesn't matter. almost all the great nigerian players in the league started waaay late.
Who says that dabuffilo? We all know its a continent. How does this video say that? I guess if i say a Brit is from Europe I'm ignorant also. Or Americans are from America. Relax.
He wasn't exactly a collision runner, like Earl Campbell, Larry Csonka, or Craig Heyward. He was just so big, that he caused a problem as most defenses didn't have people who were big enough to bring him down, and the people who were big enough were too slow. Well, at least that's what it always looked like to me. He wasn't a very violent runner, but powerful nonetheless. He didn't trample people, but they just bounced off of him. Man, he's tied for my favorite player of all time.
Pure power. He was a strong inside runner who would carry tacklers on his back, plus fight for extra yards. He had a good burst through the hole and was a load coming through, preferring to run over tacklers rather than around him. Now at his size, you did not expect any hard cuts, but he displayed a smooth change of direction and big-play speed. If he spied a crease on the corner, he had the speed to get there. He ran hard and broke tackles, but absorbed a lot of shots of his erect style
As a Texans fan I hope our Okoye comes around and plays like this guy. He's doing rounds on radio row in Dallas right now. He just did a segment with 610 in Houston and wow what a good interview. Seems like a very cool guy.
Great player. Problem is with guys this big with this ammount of speed tend to take a beating and their careers don't always last too long due to injury. Great player though.
6:35 TIM HARRIS!!! He actually makes Christian look a bit small. I had a picture taken with him at a stop and go, when I was a little kid. He lifted both me and my sister up onto his shoulders!
I used to live close to the area in Nigeria that was shown in the segment. I even once played on that yellow abandoned tractor while waiting for a bus :)
Makes you wonder if there's guys around the globe who could be 2x as good as Jordan or OJ, but they never pick up a basketball or football (or even ever know what basketball or football are)
@linebacker365 well said!! they seem to do it every time!! just go online and search african song and stick to anything.. its shows alot of ignorance (no offence)
@dabuffilo As much as I like Okoye, this video demontrates how much ignorance there is about African geography and culture. Americans tend to think of "Africa" as just one big country instead of a huge continent with many diverse countries.
@linebacker365 Europe thinks of Africa like that too. So does Mexico, Canada, and South America. Notto mention Asia. But props to you for singling out America. Talk about ignorance.....holy shit
@Iroxit You are confused. West Africa is a region of Africa that contains Nigeria and several other countries. South Africa is the name of a country in southern Africa. East Africa is where Kenya and Tanzania are located. Look at a map.
Okoye looked so silly with the massive shoulder pads on, his head barely fit out the hole in them, lol. Awesome runner though, I use him in APF 2K8 all the time.
he was bad ass I'm a raider fan and he was unstoppable and that's when the raiders were good. I like to hear and see stories of players like him he was great and like they say he didn't start playing till his early 20's
i am a lifelong San Diego Chargers fan but man did I love watching Okoye run....except when he played against us of course...lol. Where ever he is now I hope he is living a happy life.
Man, when we will ever see another like THIS guy? I actually remember when I frist heard his name. It was near the end of his senior season at Azuza and the commentators were calling him "o-KOY-uh." It took a couple of years, but they got it right. This guy was a LOT of fun to watch at a time when BIG BACKS were on the way out.
Pure power. He was a strong inside runner who would carry tacklers on his back, plus fight for extra yards. Thanks for posting this! Even though I'm a life long Seahawks fan and hating seeing him tear apart my team, I had a deep respect for his style of play, and list Okoye as my all time favorite running back. On my bookshelf I have two autographed pictures, one by Largent, and one by Okoye.
I remember the Pro Bowl that year where he did a six yard run up the middle, and got up and walked back to the huddle. The four guys who tackled him were still getting up when he got there. Ronnie Lott was one- the other three were all Lbs!
Okoye's momentum was already slowing down while Atwater was running at him full speed. It was basically a free shot. I would like to have seen him try that hit full speed vs full speed. As a long time Bronco fan, he would drive me crazy running all over the defense. Its a shame that nobody in the media dont give him the love he deserves because he was a great back.
I worked at Sunset station in Vegas during a superbowl party between the Broncos and Packers. I was a bartender on a private bar. Christin Okoye came up to the bar and started talking to me, he ended up hanging out with me the whole game and drank Heineken's he ended up signing my football card I had of him since I was a kid: )He was a real nice and humble person: ) I'm so glad I got to meet him once, especially since I've always been a Chiefs fan growing up: )

Tall backs who run high don't last long. It's practically a law of nature.
