  • he looks like brandon jacobs

  • Found the name of the groovy African song, it's called UMQOMBOTHI by Yvonne Chaka Chaka enjoy. Long Live Mother Africa!

  • 7:23 HOW THE HELL DO THEY DO THAT?

  • Very cool story documentary and person

  • Best nickname ever

  • This guy is the reason I am a KC Chiefs fan, specially growing up in PA. Remember him in Super Tecmo Bowl? Unstoppable. Then just started following the Chiefs ever since.

Eventually Derrick Thomas, became my fav. player. What a tragedy would have liked to see him end his career on his terms and continue working with his third and long foundation. Glad they didn't postpone his HOF induction.

  • I was born in 91 and named after this guy. :)

  • Igbo tribesman..wtf? There is no such thing as an Igbo tribesman.

  • @PharaohNnamdi I believe they mean "Ibo", one of the 3 largest ethnic groups in Nigeria. Nigeria is the most populous and one of the ethnically diverse countries in Africa.

  • Did they have to play stereotypical African music? 1:37.

  • remember steve atwater???? i bet okoye does

  • Thats my uncle

  • Scouts should go to Nigeria, like soccer scouts do. ya they never played, but it doesn't matter. almost all the great nigerian players in the league started waaay late.

  • @chefawkes yes, they should!

  • nigerians.. football is in our blood..

  • OMG, I miss that song what's the name of the singer help someon anyone

  • they mentioned his 50th birthday on pardon the interruption on espn today. i never heard of him but i love his style

  • One of the most humble men in the NFL what a great person...

  • great guy!

  • Who says that dabuffilo? We all know its a continent. How does this video say that? I guess if i say a Brit is from Europe I'm ignorant also. Or Americans are from America. Relax.

  • Lol my first name is Elgigante', middle name O'koye. Thanks for the love everyone :-D

  • Nigerians rock!!!

  • he can be on whatever tribe he wants

  • reminds me of tempo bowl dude couldn't be stopped

  • He wasn't exactly a collision runner, like Earl Campbell, Larry Csonka, or Craig Heyward. He was just so big, that he caused a problem as most defenses didn't have people who were big enough to bring him down, and the people who were big enough were too slow. Well, at least that's what it always looked like to me. He wasn't a very violent runner, but powerful nonetheless. He didn't trample people, but they just bounced off of him. Man, he's tied for my favorite player of all time.

  • INTERESTING...HE WAS GREAT IN HIS SHORT TIME.

ck out wichitaman7 chiefs historical montage.

    thanks

  • "He's gonna wear your ass out!" Best quote ever.

  • Nigeria is in West Africa Mr. Commentator

  • If Okoye was born in America, and played football since he was a little boy... do I need to finish?

  • Pure power. He was a strong inside runner who would carry tacklers on his back, plus fight for extra yards. He had a good burst through the hole and was a load coming through, preferring to run over tacklers rather than around him. Now at his size, you did not expect any hard cuts, but he displayed a smooth change of direction and big-play speed. If he spied a crease on the corner, he had the speed to get there. He ran hard and broke tackles, but absorbed a lot of shots of his erect style

  • anyone know the song played at 1:30

  • if he was a safety, half the players would be concussed.

  • does everyone know that christian okoye loves more soccer than american football!!SOCCER RULZ... sorry america nothin against american football

  • Okoye is what Brandon Jacobs want to be

  • @ohbitch94 Jacobs has actually run over guys.

  • As a Texans fan I hope our Okoye comes around and plays like this guy. He's doing rounds on radio row in Dallas right now. He just did a segment with 610 in Houston and wow what a good interview. Seems like a very cool guy.

  • Great player. Problem is with guys this big with this ammount of speed tend to take a beating and their careers don't always last too long due to injury. Great player though.

  • And Atwater still ate his lunch Om Nom Nom Nom....Go Orange and Blue!

  • God, how I miss early 90's Chiefs! Back when they could still win playoff games.

By the way, the scene at 5:17 just made my day!

  • he may be a greek god

  • 6:35 TIM HARRIS!!! He actually makes Christian look a bit small. I had a picture taken with him at a stop and go, when I was a little kid. He lifted both me and my sister up onto his shoulders!

  • I used to live close to the area in Nigeria that was shown in the segment. I even once played on that yellow abandoned tractor while waiting for a bus :)

  • That's a Nigerian I would actually wire money to if he was to e-mail me.

  • @wambam99999 Hahahaha!

  • He really is a role model.

  • Who could ever forget Kevin Harlan's play calling for the KC Chiefs. He was the best.

  • 6:05

  • Makes you wonder if there's guys around the globe who could be 2x as good as Jordan or OJ, but they never pick up a basketball or football (or even ever know what basketball or football are)

  • damn he's huge

  • sucks that he never played that long =(

  • @linebacker365 well said!! they seem to do it every time!! just go online and search african song and stick to anything.. its shows alot of ignorance (no offence)

  • whats with all the Souh African music they used in this lol

    he's from Nigeria comon...

  • @dabuffilo As much as I like Okoye, this video demontrates how much ignorance there is about African geography and culture. Americans tend to think of "Africa" as just one big country instead of a huge continent with many diverse countries.

  • @linebacker365 Like Sarah Palin?

  • @linebacker365 So true, It is a shame!

  • @linebacker365 it was the 80s... they didnt give a shit yet.

  • @linebacker365 Europe thinks of Africa like that too. So does Mexico, Canada, and South America. Notto mention Asia. But props to you for singling out America. Talk about ignorance.....holy shit

  • @dabuffilo isn't nigeria in south africa though?

  • @tigerchief No. It's in West Africa.

  • @linebacker365 isnt West Africa in South Africa? or am i getting confused. It might be in East Africa?

  • @Iroxit You are confused. West Africa is a region of Africa that contains Nigeria and several other countries. South Africa is the name of a country in southern Africa. East Africa is where Kenya and Tanzania are located. Look at a map.

  • @linebacker365 not much of a sense of humor :/

  • why is there a south african song on this as the theme song lmao...

  • Okoye looked so silly with the massive shoulder pads on, his head barely fit out the hole in them, lol. Awesome runner though, I use him in APF 2K8 all the time.

  • Okoye was a great guy. Always liked him. You always got a 'good vibe' from him. I wasn't even a KC fan, but liked the guy.

  • i know his nephews

  • Sharks have "Christian Okoye" week.

  • Wait the Chiefs held an open day try out?? Because I'm sure that he wasn't drafted from college.

  • @jaquino94, Okoye? He was drafted in the second round, 35th pick overall in 87.

  • great video

  • he was bad ass I'm a raider fan and he was unstoppable and that's when the raiders were good. I like to hear and see stories of players like him he was great and like they say he didn't start playing till his early 20's

  • Whats the name of the song starting at 6:00 ?

  • @swss9

did you ever get the name of that song

  • Before football he was a world class discus thrower and still holds the Nigerian record. Well over 60m.

  • @throwhammer Thanks for that info.

  • Myy Rolemodel

  • Aaaah my first football hero!

  • the nightmare was just a big sweetheart. its great.

  • It was always fun to watch Christian steamroll people playing for the Chiefs.

  • One of the best power backs in the NFL when he was in his prime.

Had he not had those nagging knee injuries, he might have been the best power back ever.

This guy, like Bo Jackson and Barry Sanders was so much fun to watch at running back.

Watching him drag tacklers from behind was just hysterical. I don't know if I've ever seen another running back do that since.

  • okoye retired because of a knee injury. he was traded to the 49ers and received a knee injury in practice before the season started

  • hes like the type of running back you'd make in madden 10. just 99 overall

  • i am a lifelong San Diego Chargers fan but man did I love watching Okoye run....except when he played against us of course...lol. Where ever he is now I hope he is living a happy life.

  • To this day i still enjoy watching highlights of Okoye run the ball.

  • THE NIghtmare,, and Barry word was the best at the time for big backs,,,just get the hell out of their way!!!,,lol

  • he was a beast for bout 2 years then fell off

  • Man, when we will ever see another like THIS guy? I actually remember when I frist heard his name. It was near the end of his senior season at Azuza and the commentators were calling him "o-KOY-uh." It took a couple of years, but they got it right. This guy was a LOT of fun to watch at a time when BIG BACKS were on the way out.

  • Anyone know that music track?

  • @Sirradal I had to find out the track at the end of the video. So far I found the title and lyrics, its,

MARGARET SINGANA - "WE ARE GROWING"

    That'll be $5

  • wow jack lambert really hit em

  • Nigeria kwenu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It's a shame he never became the hall of famer people expected him to be.

  • @Gwitfu90 i thought he was a hall of famer

  • Pure power. He was a strong inside runner who would carry tacklers on his back, plus fight for extra yards. He had a good burst through the hole and was a load coming through, preferring to run over tacklers rather than around him. Now at his size, you did not expect any hard cuts, but he displayed a smooth change of direction and big-play speed. If he spied a crease on the corner, he had the speed to get there. He ran hard and broke tackles, but absorbed a lot of shots of his erect style.

  • Christian Okoye = Techmo Bowl GOD...

  • it wuld be a nightmare tryin to tackel him.......

  • yea! he came to my school today

  • correction commentator, west not central Africa

  • @cindeler You are correct.

  • one of us non-nfl players can only be glad we did not have to stop this guy rushing through or turf ........ ;

  • @norsemustang

Okoyes official time at draft was 4.51, but some say he got faster as his nfl career went on

  • How fast was his 40 time? Someone on here said 4.48, but can someone confirm it?

  • He was great! And this comes from a german Redskins fan... And i remember Barry Word as well!

  • remember Barry Word? Another bruiser in the backfield for the chiefs at that time.

  • Thanks for posting this! Even though I'm a life long Seahawks fan and hating seeing him tear apart my team, I had a deep respect for his style of play, and list Okoye as my all time favorite running back. On my bookshelf I have two autographed pictures, one by Largent, and one by Okoye.

  • I too, remember all the times he tore apart the Hawks. It was either him or Derrik Thomas.

  • priest holmes and this dude own

  • Lmao i thought his leg was his arm in the beginning

  • favorite running back ever.

  • It's great to see him play. Thanks for posting this.

  • I remember the Pro Bowl that year where he did a six yard run up the middle, and got up and walked back to the huddle. The four guys who tackled him were still getting up when he got there. Ronnie Lott was one- the other three were all Lbs!

  • why did he Retire ?

  • injuries

  • He got tired of it. No real injuries, not forced out, he just got tired of it.

  • NIGERIAN NIGHTMARE BABY

  • he didn't start playing till he was 21!?! -just imagine if he grew up with it

  • He won a scholarship for being an excellent thrower . He started training early enough though not football. Throwing events are quite demanding.

  • just like Hakeem Olajuwan

  • definetly wouldnt want to be in the way of Okoye when he has the ball !!!

  • Okoye's momentum was already slowing down while Atwater was running at him full speed. It was basically a free shot. I would like to have seen him try that hit full speed vs full speed. Atwater would have been carted off the field, what would have been left of him that is...the rest would have to be scraped off of Okoye's cleats.

  • @coog7896 -exactly. That hit was way overrated.

  • @coog7896 too say that steve atwater would of been carted off the feild if a train hit him is foolish, let alone okoye.

  • @coog7896 I see tears!

  • @coog7896 The only reason that hit is such a big deal is because of the bazillion dudes Christian plowed over.

  • @coog7896 yes and Okoyes feet where not planted

  • Took all of Atwaters strength to hit Okoye,

Atwater is a pussy.Probably shit his pants

    trying to Okoye lol!!

  • ya fuk atwater

  • took all of okoyes strength too even try to go heads up to a 6'4 207 lbs. safety!!! thats just sad... thats like saying ed reed running ove brandon jacobs

  • im with u

  • You must not know your football kid. Research next time before you speak. Watch the video next time, when he went up against Atwater it wasn't full speed. He was one of the most devastating RB's of all time. If he played longer and grew up playing football he would be in the Hall of Fame right now. You can't disrespect Okoye.

  • okeye was very good he plows through the whole line

but steve atwater knock the shit out of him

  • That dude was a fast running monster.

  • Okoye and Barry Foster are the two backs who kind of disappeared. I never remember hearing about either retiring. They just vanished

  • Okoye injured his knee. Then go traded to the Raiders where he failed the physical. He retired after that. I actually met him at Eglin AFB in Florida. HUGE!

  • he married a white girl wow

  • think she divorced him

  • easyyy buddy christian is my uncle and lauren is my aunt

  • man I miss the old nfl days.

  • i love the nickname: nigerian nightmare!!

  • HAHAHAHA this dude got knocked the FUCK OUT!!! by Steve Atwater

  • There's a theory that some coaches, trainers or scouts have that a RB only has only so many carries in his legs. Thanks for posting this clip, haven't seen Okoye in a long time.

  • lol he didnt retire because of steve atwater.... you dont retire because you get knocked down on the first hit for the first time.... steve atwaters hit wasnt all that great.... plus he started playing when he was 27 and retired when he was 34, 34 for a running back is good

  • Good Point!

  • Atwater's hit wasn't that good? Come on man...seriously? Okoye definitley didn't retire because of that, I'm with you on that but that hit wasn't all that great?

Whether he was cutting or not...he got put on his back and atwater was left standing. Powerful hit to me

  • BULL SHIT Atwater fuckin put out his lights

  • Atawaters hit was not all that good lol it sent okoye back and on to his back

  • @nicka52

it is good, but as you said he started to play when he was 27.

maybe he would stop playing much earlier if he started when he was 21.

he wasn't "spent" or banged up.

look at ricky williams today, he is what- 33-34? and plays really good. who knows how could he play if he played in NFL insted of canada.

  • @nicka52 It was good enough to change the trajectory of his career. Don't make excuses.

  • oh man. was it even fair when he played?

  • Christian Okoye & Bo Jackson were the best runningbacks EVER. Too bad they had such short careers... Damn You, God! Damn You, I Say!!!

  • @chevysal70 um...sorry to burst your bubble - i mean, those guys WERE good, and you ARE entitled to your opinion - but we measure the BEST in the NFL in terms of *records* and/or *yardage*. b/c Jackson and Okoye they have no significant records to speak of, and b/c they didn't even eclipse a minimum of 10,000 career yds to even get on the yardage map for the best due TO their short careers hamstrInging them, that PROVED they WEREN'T the best.

  • @dukenthaylor i agree w you in one way of judging the best rbs of all time. Longevity is a very important factor. but another valid way to judge rbs is who was the best at his prime? And by that standard, Bo Jackson was right up there w almost anybody.

  • Thank you for posting this, I really enjoyed it.

  • LOL i remember this dude asa kid collecting cards. Whatta stud.

  • The Naijas have been on the job for a minute. Nightmare then Dream. Nice to see this one. Big Ups to the Rockets.

  • He is my uncle no lie.

  • Central Africa? Nigeria is in West Africa fucking idiots. I guess Ms. South Carolina was right.....Americans DO need maps.

  • You are correct.

  • Okoye was the reason i became a chiefs fan for life, in fact this looks like the same doc i saw when i was a kid that drew me in :)

    Kick ass chiefs

  • lol its no suprise the first replay was against the lions

  • lol @ that clip actually being against Dallas.

  • Jonah Lomu

  • Truly awesome athlete!!!

  • that's weird, asuza pacific recruited myself and 3 of my track teammates for track.

  • there are tall backs who last long erick dickerson for once

  • @eyezaya Yup! Roger Craig ran tall, too.

  • WHATS THE NAME OF THE SONG @ 5:57

  • I don't know

  • Shaka Zulus Theme Song

  • He retired not because of his knees. He fucked up his back/neck.

  • he retired cause of Steve Atwater

  • Dayum, Im nigerian and i didnt even know about this guy, seems like a total beast.

  • Too bad he had such a bad knee injury. He was a beast!

  • kind of sad, eagles fan here and i wish this guy lasted a bit longer

  • Tall backs who run high don't last long. It's practically a law of nature.

  • "Hes gonna ware you ass out"

  • As a long time Bronco fan, he would drive me crazy running all over the defense. Its a shame that nobody in the media dont give him the love he deserves because he was a great back.

  • I worked at Sunset station in Vegas during a superbowl party between the Broncos and Packers. I was a bartender on a private bar. Christin Okoye came up to the bar and started talking to me, he ended up hanging out with me the whole game and drank Heineken's he ended up signing my football card I had of him since I was a kid: )He was a real nice and humble person: ) I'm so glad I got to meet him once, especially since I've always been a Chiefs fan growing up: )
