This is actually really cool. Sure this unit can't do anything but it's the fact they made it capable of navigating itself without any human aid. Now think a few years and blow up this kind of technology on a macroscopic scale. Cars that can be completely able to go from point a to point b without any human help. Disaster bots that can sense and (if possible) navigate to survivors or at least point them out to rescue crews. Think big.

well i think the gyro balance system will help the robot balance it's leg when lifting heavy loads, as for disaster sites, I think not, I mean..seriously, who would put their lives in the hands of a robot? and a for jobs such as those human intuition is needed, i think it will probably be lifting for heavy loads such as construcion materials or something lol

even just accomplishing a goal like this is amazing- robots are EXTREMELY complicated to program, and double that difficulty to make it run smoothly on a new track- the decision making - how it reads visual information, how it controles its motors, if u think about something simple for us like walking- and u were asked to write how to walk in exact numbers, how u balance, what limbs move at what exact moments of time- thats the just an idea of howmuch information it must deal with

Exactly, there is a flash game out somewhere on the net, I forget where.. i think it's called qwer or something? 4 buttons, q w e and r to control the legs of a person and you have to make them run/walk down a 100m running track. two buttons for each leg, one for the pivot of hip to knee, one for pivot of knee to feet.. and it's HARD! hilarious to watch people try though :P

This robot is not pointless. With time, they could manage to make unicycle robots that can stand up and move quickly in a precise path. Rather than having some large 4-wheeler kind of robot, they could make slimmer 2 wheel or 1 wheel robots with balance to go into tight places.

And so what if robots replace all the HARD LABOR jobs... stop being so stupid in school and get a GOOD JOB WHEN YOU GROW UP SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO HARD LABOR AND MAYBE GET A JOB MAKING ROBOTS INSTEAD!
