  • My mother. Father and mother is man and wife, man and wife is one flesh, and so, my mother.

    Best insult ever.

  • Anyone who enjoys this scene should check out an essay on Hamlet by G. Wilson Knight; some great insight in this.

I didn't think it was possible to contain so many clever word-plays and morbid jokes in one scene! If I were pressed to give a favorite scene in the film, this would be it.

  • Hamlet: your FAT KING ...

    Claudius: *glares*

  • I love Shakespeare's way of telling someone to go to hell

"In heaven. Send thither to see. If your messenger find him not there, seek him in the other place yourself"

    Bloody brilliant!!

  • Shakespearean trolling is the best trolling

  • Branagh does this scene the best out of all the other versions.

  • So. Who else wishes that they were Claudius at 1:42 ?

  • watching this with the 1911 button thing that youtube has for april fools day turned on is AWESOME.

  • *ahem* ...He will stay 'till you come.

  • Branagh was actually very fortunate to have Derek Jacobi on board. He could pretty much take care of himself with all his experience, bit like Liam Neeson in Phantom Menace

  • definitely one of the better bits. This version is actually weaker than Jacobi as Hamlet. Branagh is rather amusing in the sarcasm sense. "He will stay to you come" is a great line.

  • LOL clever scene and acted out wonderfully.

  • I wish you hadn't cut out Ophelia's moment of devastating grief. Kate Winslet totally captured that moment.

  • This is my favourite scene in Hamlet. So cleverly written by Shakespeare. And so cleverly acted by Branaugh. :)

  • 1:41 Mwah!

I love this play. I heard after this scene he chased KB all over the studio going

  • I like how while you read this for the first time and you don't understand it what Hamlet is saying, you could use Claudius as a comic cop-out for not being able to understand Hamlet, like "well Claudius doesn't even understand what the hell Hamlet is saying, so how could we?" hahah

  • i love how hamlet kisses claudius, now thats committment, and what a way to fuck with claudius

  • @iambiglucas No, it wasn't. The joke is on Hamlet. "So it tis, if thou news't our purposes."

  • claudius went all Juggernaut on Hamlet

  • *PIMP SLAP*

  • "WHERE IS POLONIUS!"

    *bitchslap*

Why is this not an Internet meme yet?

  • Oh hamlet... I adore thy craziness

  • Loving the slap. Not sure that Claudius is supposed to be Hamlet's pimp though...

  • Brilliant scene showing Hamlet being the classic revenge hero. Even when speaking about death, he does so in a mocking tone- masterful.

Just before his soliloquy where he criticizes himself for not taking revenge earlier.

Well acted too - Loving the pimp slap.

  • Claudius loved Polonius!

  • It actually works really well though, explains why Hamlet stops being a smartass and decides to give him a hint as to where polonius is

  • WHERE IS POLONIUS!!! *bitchslap*

    YES

  • (not in the original stage directions) haha wud hav been funny though: CLAUDIUS: "Where is Polonius?"[bitch slap Hamlet].

  • ouch what a bitch slap

  • bloody brilliant diddly dee

  • "GET DOWN ON YOUR KNEES!"

    *slaps Hamlet*

  • Claudius is a PIMP!

  • Claudius an't a pimp, he's a fishmonger X3

  • 0:42 fun

  • That bitchslap Claudius deals Hamlet made me really happy. Hamlet had it long coming.

  • i wish i could talk like them lol

  • 0:41 PWNED!

  • KB was BRILLIANT!

  • Bill Murray was hideous as Polonius.

  • I disagree, but then, I never really liked Polonius (he reminds me too much of my own father) and therefore I never really studied the character at length. I found Bill Murray's interpretation very touching and funny, but it was also very modern, so I understand the objections to it. I wonder how Shakespeare would have felt about it.

  • No, don't bother

  • "He will stay till you come" I love that line, very funny

  • "Not where he eats, but where he is *eaten*"

  • I love it too! He'll have to, he's DEAD!

  • @1122Dragon "If your messenger find him not within this month, you shall nose [that's "smell", BTW] him as you go up the stairs into the lobby.' PHEW! :)

  • Ah! Utter perfection from both actors! My goodness, what mighty opposites!

  • haha I LOVE HAMLET!! this is one of my favorite parts!

  • Holy crap, they're both brilliant.

  • Hamlet's kiss to Claudius was excellent in terms of dramatical technique...

    Hamlet manipulates Claudius spectactularly

  • My God, Derek Jacobi stole the whole movie.

  • think so? I think Ken stole the movie, but he was hamlet, so that's expected. Jacobi was amazing as Hamlet himself, and is an amazing Claudius as well.

Andiamo pure in Inghilterra! Addio, mia cara madre.

Re:Io son tuo padre, Amleto, che ti vuole tanto bene.

Amleto:Mia madre. Padre e madre son tutt'uno, marito e moglie son tutt'una carne. Perciò mia madre...Avanti, in Inghilterra!

  • Oooh! Un po' di Italiano...Che piacere! Ottimo sottotitolo per godersi appieno questa meraviglia di scena. Io trovo che i nostri doppiatori abbiano massacrato sia l'interpretazione di Jacobi che quella di Branagh...Purtroppo!

--( A little bit of Italian...What a pleasure! It's a very good subtitle in order to enjoy that wonderful scene. I think our dubbers butchered Jacobi's and Branagh's performances...Alas!

  • "you shall nose him as you go up the stairs into the lobby"

  • EWW! I smell shit, oh, I think they found the body, LOL!

  • Sir Derek is just......Flawless.

  • Well, bloody brilliant and bloody sexy! Great piece, no doubt about it...Branagh too is fantastic! Thanks for sharing!!!

  • A piece of work. It took ten shots for this perfection.

  • Ah..thats form the full-lenght version, is it not? I love that adaptation, Brannagh did a really proper job on transmitting the contents of the story. Love how he mocks Olivier.
