They do give off a decent amount of heat. Now I have 2x400w, 2x250w and a T5 fixture. But I also have central A/C. I probably would say don't do it if you have heat problems already. T5 do great, and LED are also a good solution. If you don't care about heat, MH is great.
@videodownhiller why do you have that muc h lighting?, i have a 2 250 with 2 54w t5ho actinic over my 90 gallon and everything i keep grows like crazy including sps and 5 clams....
You have the same amount of lighting. I have 2x250w, just as you have with 4x54w compact flourescent actinics. The only difference is you have t5 actinics. Otherwise they are the same...you are right. Check out my other videos that are more recent. Trust me I have a ton of corals and clams and know what they need to survive. I think somewhere around 200 species of corals in my new 200g tank.
Haha, I have 2x400w lighting on my 200g, plus the 760w, plus a TEK t5 fixture. Not to mention return pumps and powerheads for 3 tanks. Electricity is my friend, power company is my enemy.
it is all dependent on what you are keeping. for fish and some zoanthids it would probably be fine, acans seem to like pc lights too. Softies will probably do fine, but SPS and many LPS will not have enough light with those lights.
Ignorance as is stubborn and not having knowledge before commenting. Odyssea MH lights do not catch on fire. That one one persons mistake. Have you seen everyones catch on fire? that is just something people say on forums not even knowing it happened to only 1 person long ago. They know have improved alot and have better ballasts. As you can see you have thumbs down from people for that comment.
please click on a more recent update on my tank. it has changed a ton. i will update again this weekend, check it out and comment to let me know what you think. my tank looks nothing like what it did in this video.
Agreed. they are very powerful. I like the koralias for right now, but when i set up the 200 i will need more power, and that is a cheap way to go, may go with used tunze, dont know.
a 55gallon is also a 4 foot long tank, like my 72. i have one in my tank, but intend to give the fish to someone with a bigger tank when it gets to the 5" range. it depends on your filtration and swimming space. it is definitely not recommended especially with their fast growth, and max size of over 12". i would stick with smaller fish like chromis and anthias if i were you.
at the time of the video it was a hang on back style, via aqua multi skimmer deluxe. since i have upgraded and added a sump and a beefier skimmer, but i still dont know if it is much better, if any, that skimmer really pulled some good skimmate.
that sounds great. how close is it to where you live? would you be interested in possibly collecting some for me and i could pay you and pay for shipping? just a thought. it would be great, but i understand that everyone is busy, but maybe you would like to help a fellow reefer starting up in the hobby.
I will put the feelers out to the local reef club, Wasatch Marine Aquarium Society (WMAS) to see if any one has any laying around that we could box up and send you. How many pounds are you in need of? Are you posting as Downhillbiker on ReefCentral? Welcome to the hobby!
yes that would be me downhillbiker on reef central. what is your name on there. you've probably see me a lot on there. i am very active, or try to be on the site. giving any knowledge i have and learning so much. i would love it if we could make that happen with the rocks, i dont know exactly how much i need. i would take whatever you could send. i dont want to be greedy, i need total about 75lbs, but a little bit will get me a little closer. i just dont want to pay the prices that they ask. sad
I post as dca22anderson on reef central. I will round up some tufa rock to send to you. If you pick up the shipping I think that I can get you the rock for no cost.
i sent you a pm on reefcentral. i looked up shipping charges and it looks like (and i dont know how much rock i'm getting) but for 75lbs it is $30 at dhl, $36 at fedex, and $58 at ups. do you have dhl around there. i included lots more info and of course many thanks in the pm on reefcentral, thanks again. and we should chat on there from now on.
if you dont have time to collect the rock i may be interested in buying some rock from the local guy you talked about. let me know what your plans are and maybe that would work. do you think that i could just add regular rock that has lots of pours that i can find out in the woods?
Hey man, the tank looks horrid, looks very cheap, everything looks ghetto as heck, please spend at least 1000$ making it look better, you NEED a sump, PLEASE for god sakes don't get a 3rd tang in a 75 gal, YOU NEED WAY MORE FLOW!!! get some K4s, make a canopy to hide all the junk, you need a TON more live rock in that tank, I really hope that is not crushed coral subs, corals are very ugly, Aquatraders lights are good and all, but PLEASE upgrade the ballasts to ice caps or something
just keep on knockin' it down and then watch the videos as i update the tank. sorry about your opinion, it sucks. i kindof get tired of people saying you have to spend thousands and thousands on tanks. i've spent a lot, but saved a lot too. people grow great corals with vho or pc lights, so how is the metal halide that i'm running not going to work. i added two more powerheads, no its not crushed coral sub. its just sand. dont want a hood, dont want a sump, my tank remember.
I actually gave up on the sailfin idea. I plan to stick with the two that I have now, and the next fish I get will be a few green chromis, an engineer goby, and a coral beaty angel. Hopefully the coral beauty won't nip at my corals, I've heard they do that once in a while.
I intend to add more rock. Live rock is very expensive, so I will probably add non-live rock and allow it to culture in the tank. I know I need to pile up the rock and really build it into a reef, but right now the corals are growing and I will add rock as I go, as well as coral. Do you know of any places that I can get cheap non-live rock? I may collect it myself too. I'm trying to find tufa rock.
