This really took me back. I was only 9 or 10 years old when my dad let me play records on his setup back in the late 50's. I remember the Gray tonearm and two Heath integrated amps and a pair of Symphonic speakers. I don't know what kind of cartridge he used but it had to have been stereo.
@49kasey - that's 'Swing' they're playing there, back at that time the Melvin Haggard band were on The World Record Club with a mono LP called 'Dixieland Goes West'. It's a real good swing record if you can pick one up on er that trading platform everybody knows.
I have one of these now. Just got it yesterday. Identical to the model shown except not in the custom base,. (Mine is missing base) w/custom tonearm. Very heavy eh...more so than the old P.E's Miracords etc..
"Bogen-Lenco" B60.
You could set up 2 different cartridges in yours. Mono in the custom wood arm, stereo in the Lenco's arm.
I had an opportunity in 1986 to buy a Lenco L75...for $75. I could not afford it then.
Bravo! Most people think HiFi is a recent discovery! I've owned many old Rek-O-Kut tables and GE VR carts and Mono tube amps, and they never failed to please and astound the most ardent modern day audiophile. You've got a great system for Monaural! I'm getting an itch to go looking for old ROK tables and Bogen amps just watching this! Thanks for sharing!
Reminds me of the t-tables we had when I worked at an AM radio station a hundred years ago. They were built like tanks, but had such pure, genuine sound. Thanks for taking me back...
The tonearm being used is a Gray Research silicone damped model. I used this tonearms combined with Garrards 401s in several radio stations. It´s a beautiful and very good sounding tonearm. Weigth is calibrated by means of a heavy counterweight, at the back of the arm , and pressure applied using small metal blades weigthing 0,5 grams each, mounted above the cartridge.
whats the tracking force of your arm set to on this particular phono pickup? i have ge vrii but i'm a bit scared to set the tracking force to 6grams, it might destroy the record. i have a lot of mono lp's i have inherited from both my dad and grand fathers.
Don' lose sleep over the tracking force of the GE cartridges. 5 grams is distributed over a larger surface area, so the force per sq in may be the same or less than a modern pickup. The beauty of the GE is that it often plays much more quietly than, say, a Denon DL103 when used with old mono recordings. Do some googling and find je2a3's website and have your life changed.
Nice one! I am the happy owner of two turntables like this one. In Europe, they are called Lenco L70. What is the tonearm you use? Maybe you should also try the original Lenco arm, it is better than many people think.

It tracks at about 29 pounds for the mono recordings ha ha ha. What are you worried about how many freakin grams. go get an mp3 player and don't worry about it with the mono recordings will ya? go on go on.....
It is rough taking a phonograph in the car. And, I hate having to go through my CD collection to find a certain one. MP3 to the rescue! I plug it in to my tube amp, or my car and away I go, all my favorite music. Should hear it play Girl From Ipanema - awesome!
ah... your tone arm is NEAT ...turntable NEAT 48-P .. I have it too.. 1958 i dad bought .. VINTAGE

The GE Rpx cartridge is an ideal match for the Gray arm.

Strange how you can hear the tube sound, even over youtube. It just sounds different. That warmth!

That's a great system for playback of mono recordings! I was wondering how many grams would that cartridge/stylus be tracking at?
Thanks again!
