Yeah watching this in 2012...but what a fascinating documentary about a fascinating culture. Much respect from Brooklyn, NY. I can't wait to Finnish my post grad studies in Scotland!!!
I love in the beginning when he says "A Scottish takeover of England! Who would have thought?" He mad excited about it lol. Awesome program, and awesome narrator. I've loved this whole series.
Dear me! Who ever wrote this nonsense of a script must have really lost all his/her wit! Not Scotland did take over England but England absorbed Scotland and so today there is not an English National party struggling for independence but a Scottish one; since the Scots lost all they had before: Their independence, their laws, their friends (such as France) and a lot of money too, first by the English taxes and then their oil revenue, which the English take up to this day!
How I wish I could live out my days in Scotland instead of the war mongering over political, lobbyist place called America ...why anyone would want to live in the US now is unknown to me ,the spiritual areas of the US were killed off with the Indian tribes by war mongering greed
We are told that Henry VIII wanted a son + Catherine could not have one so a divorce was needed.
More to the point was that Catherine - according to one writer - was 'as wide as she was tall' . On the other hand Anne Bolyn was a bit of all right and Henry did what any chauvinist pig would do. He wanted to service Ann so he needed a divorce. Only the Catherine's uncle held the Pope to ransom and no divorce was possible.
Wales isnt on the flag because it was conquered by the English and became a principality of England. Scotland was never conquered and therefore was a separate kingdom.
I love the fact that no matter what the English were doing in the world up until the late twentieth century, the French and Scottish always wanted to have a war over it. Including Canada. XD
i am not a Scott but i have found that the Scotts were the people whoheld their own for millenia of english advances and still didint give up and stood themselves and their way of living.... long live that spirit...peace
@sushanalone Not only that but the people of Scotland resisted centuries of Roman advances into Scotland, what they lacked against Romans in numbers they made up for in vicious brutality that Roman records state they attacked their enemies with such terrible violence that lesser secondary rank regiments behind the primary regiments who had not directly faced them yet didn't, they instead ran back off and were routed.
i love how excited he sounds when he says ''a scottish take-over of England..'' he sounds really proud to be scottish and of his history,. love the series thanks for putting them up(:
@Levax3 But that is what happened... but I think we are going to find that religion and politics were once more mixed up.... let's wait and see what Neil has to say on the subject....
true but James the 4th wanted to show that no one is better then the next person its just that no one else shaw it that way I dont like the jack but I do like what it stands for
@BonnieBlueFlag1314 wales isn;t on the flag because it was a union of the kingdoms of scotland and england (wales being a principality and controlled by england)
You already have 'A History of Britain' series by Simon Schama released around 2002, I think. They're also quite entertaining although more focused on England as a result of his wholistic nature.
7:53.....the Loire Valley. ...when half the Gaels left Germania this was the first stop! where the Gaels were absorbed into Celtic culture! if only Mary had know the signifigance of this valley!
I wonder what if Scotland and France united

It was no such thing, a Scottish takeover of England. James vi soon forgot the land of his birth.

They are right to end the series just before 1707 as Scottish history effectivly ends at this point.
BonnieBlueFlag1314 2 years ago
well they are talking about making one for British History but it would still be scottish

Scratch away the facade of the Union Jack and all you see behind it is St.Georges cross...

Camouflage16 2 years ago
Well considering there isnt a part of the flag that represents Wales I would say that is incorrect.
The flag represents English Imperialism and its insipid spiritual twin- Scottish Unionism.
BonnieBlueFlag1314 2 years ago 3
Just as well the majority of scots dont think like you.
