  • I can't believe they served cake at that wedding. Abominable!

  • Emma, a most darling character, most mischevious and cunning, Mr. Knightly compliments her well. So much brain power yet put to so dangerous uses, reminds me of myself at her age, getting into mishap after mishap.

  • Awesome! Thanks for uploading.

  • "Cake?! Surely you're not serving CAKE at your wedding? Far too rich. You'll put us all at peril. And I am not alone in feeling so. Where is Mr. Perry, the apothecary? He will support me." "He is over there, Mr. Woodhouse, having some cake." LOL

  • Miss Bates talks and acts exactly like my mother-in-law! I may be giggling just a bit.

  • haha my name is emma 2

  • omg its moaning myrtle! XD :o

  • PORK!

  • thank yooou. so much for uploading this

  • mrs.bates looks so miserable

  • Gwenyth Paltrow's voice reminds me of Audrey Hepburn's. I love it! :)

  • My name's Emma. My friend, Chloe, was telling me about it yesturday. That's how I found it.

  • ewan mcgregor!! obi-wan! :) ♥

  • @abcsrkool Um... where? Who does he play?

  • @cricketsong4045 he plays frank churchill... or so it says in his IMDb...

  • @abcsrkool wasn't he the guy who wrote someday my prince will come? Must have been a naming thing...

  • I really love Miss Bates in this scene. She´s very eccentric but so endearing. I have a friend like her. Who´d make an equally good character in a book

  • Where is this P1i?? :)

  • Gwyneth is amazing here. She rocks that accent.

  • My brother's brother in law is pretty handsome and he is 8 years older than me so i cant help but think of Mr. Knightley since he is Emma's sister's brother in law and is a lot older than Emma! :)

  • Oh my gosh! Im so happy you put this on youtube! I own this movie but my sister (who is already moved out) took it without telling me so i went to watch it the other day and it was gone! I'm reading the book and it made me want to watch this so bad! Thank you so much for posting and listening to my dilemma!

  • Several posters here have referred to this film being "Victorian" which it is not. The Victorian Era is 1837-1901 During which Queen Victoria reigned. This, and most of Jane Austen's novels are set during what is referred to as the "Recency Era" 1811-1820.

  • @thebackgroundartiste Regency* and more precisely the Georgian era. I did the research madam.

  • Thankyou so much for uploading a period film with good volume. I am shocked at how many people upload a film you cannot hear , and as most of these films have narration and "quiet" scenes and characters with accents of all kinds, it makes it difficult to watch them with inadequate sound. Thank you again. A charming and beautiful film.

  • Romola Garai by far made the best Emma I have ever seen.

  • @rialized She is horrible in everything she does.I don't know who she is related to (that name has to be made up) but it must be someone with a lot of power in England for her to be allowed to take so many roles from much better (and better looking) actresses and ruin what could be good productions merely with her presence.

  • @thebackgroundartiste Her first name is made up, yes--her parents intended it to be a female version of the Roman name, Romulus. Her last name comes from her Hungarian-Jewish background. Interestingly, she was nominated for a Golden Globe for this role as Emma.

  • @rialized And Pia Zadora has a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a motion picture .WHO??? Exactly. Apparently the same person giving Miss Garai her "acting" opportunities is capable of getting her a nomination as well.

  • @thebackgroundartiste I beg to differ that Romola Garai is a horrible actress! For me, despite her buggy eyes, she is very charming and lighthearted. Besides, she doesn't always do bug-eyes. She was very good as Gwendolen Harleth in Daniel Deronda.

  • @Felicity1247 Yes, I have seen that too. The only person that annoyed me more was Jodhi Maywho I also cannot stand. Did you see "The House of Mirth" ? She played Lily's cousin.

  • i think Kate Beckinsale made a better emma, still.

emma cant be blonde... it makes no sense at all. no, she must be a brunette! :)

  • if only my lovelife was as romantic and lovely as those in the jane austen stories, that'd be all i'd need:)

  • *sigh* I really do wish i had lived in this era....

  • @katieroxxursoxx Same here, so much that it makes me sad. The generation that we live in today is devoid of beautiful and romantic expression and is just altogether disgraceful and futile. Nothing can compare to the grandeur of the 19th century.

  • @j3nnabear except maybe things like feminism, or birth control, or tiny middling things.

  • You put us all at peril serving cake! LOL

  • I just love old european style movies ><, for example pride and prejudice! I'ld love to live in the time period of gorgeous Victorian dresses! But then again I love modern age too...What decisions! Ha ha I'm so silly XD...

  • Thankyou thankyou THANKYOU for putting this up!

  • This is by far my favorite version of Emma.

  • there are Mr. Knightleys everywhere, women ignore then until its too late. :)

  • @ICatDocsports *sigh* How I wish I could believe that... I'm really beginning to wonder if gentlemen exist in todays society.

  • The woman who plays miss bates has played miss bates in a different version of Emma aswell :) she is v gd at it

  • I love evrything about this movie!! Jeremy Northam is a darling in this movie, he portrays the perfect lover and Gwyneth is so beautiful.. really wish i lived back then..

  • this is such a fabulous, beautiful movie. Thank you so much for uploading it! x

  • Mr. Knightley - the sexiest of all fictional men. I would be COMPLETELY content for life if I end up marrying someone like him.

  • @broadwaystar92 Who wouldnt be?

  • @FellowTownsman i love your comment

  • @tazzmaster52 Thankyou, i'm just recovering now.

  • 38 dislikes? And cake served at the wedding? What is the world coming too.

My smelling salts, my smelling salts.

  • It's FLOOP! YAY! Lol. It's all I can think about when I see "Mr. Elton."

  • PORK! lol

  • gwyneth paltrow???????????

  • When I saw that Gwyneth Paltrow is in this movie...I orgasmed.

  • One of my favorites. So very witty.

  • I just noticed after watching both the BBC version and this one that Mr.Woodhouse is quite the hypochondriac.

  • 35 dislikes! I am quite put out!

  • "It left us speechless, quite speechless I tell you, and we have not stopped talking of it since!" LOL

  • I guess it's not a good idea to watch the BBC version first because then one doesn't like this one

  • @ThePianosarah I agree, this movie sucks in comparison

  • @ThePianosarah I still like this one. :) Can't help it - when I need my Emma fix and don't have 4 hours to spare, I come here. lol.

  • LOL do u guys notice when there is a video uploaded on youtube and the setting is somewhere in the 1800s the comments posted have amazing old-fashioned grammar. i find it interesting =}

  • @celtticnesses isnt it more around the 1700s ?

  • @celtticnesses that is so true. you are so funny

  • I love how their ballgowns though, omg, when i read or watch period dramas, novels I fall in love with the era even more!! :) I love darcy,Elizabeth, Emma and Mr. Knightley and even catherine and Mr. Heathcliff. =D

  • hahaha i love how mr. elton is so awkward

  • Thank you thankyou soo much for uploading this I love this movie and jane austen <3

  • thanks for putting this on YouTube! monday I have a test about the book, but I read very slow, so I can never finish it in time. and I can't find a shop or a store to buy/rent the movie. this helps me a lot! thank you!

  • If only we had the grace and majesty of the time, but the freedom of love now :)

  • Jane Austen is great!

  • poo

  • I love this movie =D

  • That Mr Knightley is especially handsome ;) Why do I have to live now?

  • This better be good....

  • i LOVE the anime version of this as well...Emma , A Victorian Romance...i can find it through google search in english subtitles/Japanese voice. it is good.

  • @cherryblossem131313 I like that too, although it seems kinda far away to me... I mean the stories are not really alike

  • @friesiVF13 your right i wrote this expecting for it to be similar and it wasnt at all what i expected but all and all they have similar ways about them ...though i like the animes emma's character best for she is a quiet and very simple person ...i sometimes love that in a character. lol sorry

  • @cherryblossem131313 it's okay I just luv the anime.... I saw it before I watched this so.... Watched it over and over again ^^

  • BEST JANE AUSTIN MOVIE EVER!!!!! <3

  • I love to watch this version. . .I think I have probably seen it about 30x now. . .I have it set up to play continuously along with Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Sense and Sensibility and then the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice. . .LOVE these. . .*sigh*

  • I love this movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • first time watching emma :) fingers crossed, hope its good

  • @randompeople14 what did you think of it?? (just curious... because i grew up with this one, then later watched the Kate Beckinsale version and recently the newest version. i like all of them for different reasons)

  • @southcapefarm haha it was really romantic :) loved the casting, haha fair enough although theres different adaptations, its still the same concept of emma so who isnt going to love it :D

  • @randompeople14 oh good! yup, exactly! I love the story of Emma because... oh, it's hard to explain. :)

  • whoever plays the bates is doing an AWESOME job.

  • Love it - thanks for uploading!!

  • Oh, I love this movie, it is such a brilliant story and i prefer the characters (especially mr Knightly) to all the other Austen stories. I wish i had lived then and married a gentleman like Mr Knightly :( Thanks for uploading this fabulous movie :)

  • At 7:37 I thougt, that John Lennon was just coming in O.o

  • Thank you for uploading wonderful movie.

  • legendado pelo amor de deusssssssssssssss

  • oh i too wish to be an eligible lady back in those times so that i could pick and choose a handsome man hurray just the thought makes me giggly.

  • I still think Romola Garai a better Emma.

  • A good version, but i wouldnt say as good as the Beckinsale one, but Jeremy Northam is always a decent actor to watch.

But i love the settings. Highlight of the film.

  • thank you sooo much vor the upload, it was on tv the other day, but I missed it, now I can watch it here!

  • I think this version of Emma is the best!!

  • thanx so much for this upload. Do only own the book and are now able to watch the film online. Terrific...

  • Thanks so much for uploading this version of Emma. I own it on VHS but now I can watch it online also...lol.

I think this is the best version of Emma even though normally I prefer the longer BBC versions. But in the 2009 version, Mr. Kinghtley, instead of being confident like Jeremy Northam, looks like he suffers from some kind of compulsive disorder - he acts very strangely in the way he talks & walks. Anyway, the cast in this is much better and this version is much more funny and romantic.

  • You know... if you're ever fortunate enough to fly in a heliocopter over Highbury in North London at night and look down... the star equence is very similar.

A very beautiful film... and wow... wot a great cast! Gwyneth is the best looking Emma Woodhouse I've seen...

  • You know... if you're ever fortunate enough to fly in a heliocopter over Highbury in North London at night and look down... the star equence is very similar.

  • Mrs. Bates was also the actress who played Mary in Persuasion 1995 version. She's indeed a very good actress.

  • @zashie84th I know! She can play such different kinds of roles! She was such a dismal character in Persuasion, and she's such a ridiculous one here, but she can always portray these strange characters and still successfully tie in such human elements. Man, she makes me LAUGH in this movie! :)

  • Ahhhh....to have lived then, when there really were Ladies and Gentlemen, and people had good manners, and women could dress up for balls and dance with all the handsome men.....sigh. I'd love to have lived then.

(Provided I was as well off as Emma Woodhouse of course. And had a friend as dishy as Mr Knightley.:)

  • @TheGlassbooks yeah but unless you were from high society, very rich and very beautiful you wouldn't have any chance to reach hapiness, not even a chance to reach respect!!!!

  • @TheGlassbooks actually i heard it wasnt as nice as it lead on the nobleman werent all that nice and happy endings are rare in that time, people really did have to marry whomever their parents chose

  • @TheGlassbooks - My feelings exactly. =)

  • @TheGlassbooks and racists, white supremacy, and inequality for women etc...not so sure...

  • @TheGlassbooks i know what you mean!

  • @TheGlassbooks

Well, you can't fix all of society, but you could try inviting your friends to a costume ball. If there's not room at your home, you could probably rent room somewhere - at a gym or something.

  • @TheGlassbooks

I know exactly what you mean! It would be sooo amazing to live back then when people actually had to have manners and wear beautiful dresses all the time. That would be so amazing:)

  • @TheGlassbooks Your caveat is in exactly alignment with my own. And do remember, they FROZE in those large houses. To have a fire in every room was laughed upon, and was only for the very very rich. So were all those nice clothes. What I want is those times as portrayed in films. Ahhh - now that would be perfect ;)

  • @TheGlassbooks yes, but one had to be rich to go to balls and have beautiful gowns. more than 70% of the people didn't have that life.

I always find it funny to see people who want to go back at that time: try to go back than and working in a farm, you'll see what a hell was that kind of life

  • @TheGlassbooks if you have money like Emma, you'd be alble to move in high society, where good manners still exist, you wouldn't need to go live in the 19th century

  • @TheGlassbooks Oh, it wasnt as good as they build it up to be.

  • @TheGlassbooks

ya me too, life back then seems so peaceful:)

  • This is a very good adaptation. Alot better than Mansfield park

  • this is my favorite version of Emma!

  • thank you, thank you, and yet again thank you so much for taking the time to put this up, muchly appreciated :)

  • I seen this movie a while back why do their voices sound differant on youtube?

  • Emma and Knightley, Harriet and Elton, Frank and Jane... yawn... Who gives a toss about any of them? Miss Bates and Mrs Bates is the greatest pairing and Sophie Thompson and Phyllida Law are the star turn of the entire film. Miss Bates permeates Mrs Bates world of silence with words barked at random: "Pork!" "Angels!" Cracks me up every time.

  • @JohnnyContagious ... Hee hee... I love the 'Misses Bates' too... BUT did you know that they are real life mother and daughter too!!!!!... Crackin' pairing... CRACKIN@'PAIRING I said MOTHER..... LOL... :0)x

  • Stumbled upon the trailer and my jaw dropped when I saw the guy who played Sir Thomas More in "The Tudors" as one of the leading men using his voice in such a way that made me drooool.

And there's Attia of the Julii in this too! :D *sits back and enjoys the movie.*

  • @singerinwhite Oh yeah!! I got Rome out of the library a few months back and completley forgotten that Jane is Attia! And Thomas More. They are brilliant actors.

  • the globe that Emma painted looks like a jawbreaker that has been licked a couple times and that is the color underneath!!

  • LOL @ miss bates

  • i watched the other versions and this one BY FAR is the best! Gwyeneth Paltrow is superb as emma. Her every expressions a delight and Jeremy Norton is just such a perfect Mr Knightly**even though Mr Darcy will always be my fav Austen Hero:)

  • this is my favorite adaption of the book. i love this emma mr. knightly the best.

  • If one day I may marry, I would love to have a husband like Mr. Knightley.

  • "PORK!" XD

  • @wmeow .... Isn't Sophie thompson a wonderful actress... Not only a strong role in Eastenderders as a bit of amad woman, but here as a soft genteel woman here in Emma... Her sister Emma Thompson ... 'Nanny McFee' ... 'Sense and Sensibility' must be very proud of her, and indeed her mother Famous actress Phyllida Law too... :0)x

  • @wenglishsal ... whoops typo's aplenty.. to excited to type I guess.. :0)x

  • WE are studying this story. I love youtube because you can watch the movie before reading the book. It helps it to make more sense.

  • One of my favorite movies. I first watched this at 16 years old. Love it. thanks.

  • thank you so much for uploading this, i have to read the book for school and i dont really understand it.. so hopefully this will help

  • @thisisrachels I don't know how old you are but you need to understand that Jane Austen Style of writing is really quite unique. You would have a better time reading Charles Dickens or the Bronte sisters whos language is formal but modern. Jane Austin seems to tangle her words up. So to read her you sometimes have to forget there are commas in her sentences for you to get her meaning. She is really difficult nearly as bad as shakespear, but once you understand how she communicates its worth it!

  • @iLuvAkeys4ever when i said i have to read emma for school, i meant i have no choice.. many of my classmates say once i understand it, it's not that bad.. so i decided to watch the movie to try to grasp the general ideas .. trust me when i say that my choice in reading jane austen is not voluntary

  • @thisisrachels

I hated Shakespeare when I was a teenager. Today, Much Ado About Nothing is one of my favourite reads. If you're lucky, you'll grow to love Jane Austen when you leave school and read it for your own simple pleasure. If it helps, Austen is considerably easier than Shakespeare (who used a hell of a lot of urban slang, not that many literary scholars will admit that). To help you to understand Emma better, I suggest you look at the setting and the culture of the people at the time.

  • @policemanaaron I actually like Shakespeare, believe it or not.. But yeah, I get what you mean when you say I'll grow to love it... I had to read Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and at first, of course, I complained about it.. But now, I love it for some strange reason. Thanks for the tips

  • @thisisrachels

You're welcome. Here's a tip that is critically important to reading Austen: Women had grossly inferior property rights when compared to those enjoyed by men. Property is passed on to MALE heirs (or, the husbands of female heirs - ie. son in-law). Women found security (of income, home, etc) mainly from their father or their husband (upon marriage). THIS is why marriage to "someone suitable" is so important to the female characters in Austen's novels. I hope this helps. Enjoy :-)

  • @policemanaaron Thanks :) But the thing is, it's not so much the cultural setting of Austen's novels that I don't understand. To put it nicely, her language bores me. BUT, that said, I'm yet to actually read Emma, and I might grow to love it by the end, after all, I love the storyline.

  • wow, I have to say I enjoy the new Emma more, but this seems a bit more real, how they may have actually been.

  • What a beautiful opening sequence!

  • I prefer how they portrayed Miss Bates in the Romola version.

  • I've seen the 2009 version. So I decided to give this one a go. But after only seeing the first part I can definitely say i prefer romola as emma. Gwyneth's englisch accent sounds terrible..

Still going to watch the other parts because i love jeremy northam. So maybe I will change my opinion.

  • só faltou a legenda...

  • ve this movie :) i even have the book!

  • i love gwyneth in this movie she is the perfect emma

  • "Speechless, quite speechless. And we haven't stopped talking of it since."

  • Is this Emma (1996, Jane Austen) ?

  • Thanks for uploading, great movie.

  • ma fav. movie

  • PORK!!! lol

  • Putting aside the question of whether Gwyneth or Romola is better as Emma -- I think the relationship between Emma and Ms. Taylor/Mrs. Weston is a lot better in this version. In the new 2009 version their relationship is so catty and juvenile-- it's really hard to believe there could be such an age difference between the two. In this version they actually seem like a mother/daughter friendship.

  • @lianrilianri this film is far better than the 2009 version in every single detail

  • i love gwyneth, she's beautiful!

  • jane austens emotions will be the death of me. but i cannot think of a better way to go

  • mr. floop is in this movie, creepy

  • thanks for this vid =]

  • I´m sorry, but I just cannot bear Gwyneth Paltrow's Emma...why she plays her arrogant and haughty is beyond me. Just makes it so hard to enjoy the other's performances, it´s like the "star" was put in for her name, but for me she just does not shine at all...Now I know why Jane Austen thought no-one would like Emma but her - they get her wrong! Annoying!
