Fearless was a great movie not because of a good storyline, because there are unique fight scenes in it never seen before especially fencing vs kung fu.
La Veradadera Destreza is fascinating and beautiful, thanks to Anthony for bringing it to my attention, Just wish I could find some instruction in Moscow.
I really have a great time watching Anthony DeLongis' swordplay. He brings so many things to the table when you think of how to captivate an audience, and his close combat moves are so fluid and well done that it seems natural. I actually have both of his sword for the stage and screen tutorials on VHS, it's a pity I don't have a VCR anymore.
Some clips from Anthony using the Claymore In Deadliest Warrior would be sweet. Please tell me somebody that they're bringing him back For Deadliest Warrior Season 2 to represent, say, One of Napoleon's Troops so he can use a Cavalry saber.
you are right Anthony knows many different styles of sword combat but he has done the La Verdadera Destreza spanish style of fencing which is not sport fencing for 35 years
He only started seriously studying Spanish rapier with the Martinezes for the past 8 years. He first brought it to the screen for Highlander when he began reading interpretations of the original texts, which was 14 years ago. He's actually been a sport fencer for 41 years.
but in the special features in the movie fearless he says quote" i have been a student of the sword for 35 years specializing in the unique spanish style La Verdadera Destreza which is a very deadly martial art" so that is what i know but i could be wrong what website did you get your info drom if you don't mind me asking
I assume you mean "sport fencing?" Because you are right, they are quite different. However, Anthony does not have one style of swordsmanship. He also practices sport fencing (seen in the GMC commercial), both sabre and epee, Italian raper, shinkendo, along with studying broadsword and smallsword
I CANNOT get tired of seeing the Fearless fencing vs Chinese sword scene. Very original, fits the movie theme to a T (west vs east). Tony and Jet really rocked!
what do you mean by "fencing"? Sword work depends upon the weapon. You don't use a heavy broadsword the same way you use a katana or a smallsword. Different weapon -- different technique or style. He has studied sport fencing (sabre and epee), Spanish rapier, Italian rapier, katana, and broadsword. One style does not fit all.
Awesome sword skill. I remember seeing that Highlander clip in a commercial once, and always wondered who was in it. By the way, in that scene, they were fighting on a mat that seemed to be covered with geometric lines and angles. Was something like that just used for the show, or was it employed traditional fencing training?
I don't think this is what rapier fencing looked like, unless you mean stage/movie fencing. The rapier is a thrusting weapon mainly and, there are lot's of clips of the various styles on youtube. You probably have heard of Dr. Ramon Martinez, who has a video on Spanish Rapier fencing.
The fight was staged for film. Anthony is very familiar with Maestro Martinez. He produced both the Maestro's Spanish and Italian rapier videos and has trained with him. Martinez expressed that the show was the closest he's seen to a correct theatrical interpretation of la verdadera destreza.
Actually it is from the cut and thrust sword. A pure Rapier (French word) is a very different weapon--weighs less and has no cutting ability. Cut and thrust you cannot do modern fencing techniques with. A Foil never was a weapon and its style is about as real as point Karate is to street fighting. BTW Saludos a Antonia de mi.
I thouroughly enjoyed watching this video clip, the action rarely stops! I can see I'll have to make Mr. De Longis one of my swords now! Brokenfeather
Interesting comment, but I've seen people from all walks of life taking fencing at L.A. Valley College. For many older adults, it is fabulous exercise - physically and mentally. If you've never done sport fencing, you've never really heard your thighs scream. I've also met many re-enactors who study a variety of fencing styles. They also come from all walks of life -- some of which I would never consider to be elite.

One of the best Highlander episodes I ever saw was with him:Duende. That was an increidble sword play and I loved the relationship with dance.

@kit40: it's from a Sean Lennon music video, shot at the Mission in San Juan Capistrano.

it is Thibault's Mysterious Circle, a Spanish rapier fencing style that is core to this episode of Highlander.
