Beating your kid is is by far more damaging than it is helpful. Don't request me to link you to such studies because I don't recall the exact institutes who did them, but the very long-lasting harming effects of beating your children have been proven more than enough.

Ignoring your kid when it behaves in this way is a much better method, for instance.
