This is right from your heart and soul! Just a great folk style song with a country flavor! This is just great songwriting David! We can all understand these lyrics and time does catch up with all of us eventually. So well put my friend and very nicely sung and played! :))
You can do it all in the music field. You should have your own record company by now. lol :)
It is so wonderful when a song that has been put in my hand makes a positive impact in the life of another person. That makes me feel so wonderful to hear...
u are very nice person..our age keep moving we can't avoid that..but we can maintain to be young if we want to..i'm still 18 old boy forever..even though my age keep on moving...
lol...I know I'm singing "I" in this song but the song is not about me at all. I am just putting myself in the position of someone else when I sing that, but thank you so much for calling me a "nice person". Sometimes I really don't feel like one, and I never tire of hearing that.
I know what you mean with the "18 year old boy" comment too. Yes, it helps to be young at heart in certain ways, even if you're not young anymore. Great comments, thank you so much!!
Wow this song really takes in a whole world of what I'm sure people only ten/fifteen years older than me feel -- and sometimes, even what one my age feels too!
GREAT bit of writing - again - David. Very nicely laid down here ... poignant.
And to think that this one started out as a great dance-song cover by Rebecca Shearing! lol
I feel sorry for the guy in this song. As I have posted, he's got his whole identity wrapped up in being "biggest and baddest". I tried to step inside his mind and world and imagine...hope I did a convincing job.
Thank you so much. I always try to write stuff uniquely and give it a different point of view....and do so with compassion, trying to understand.
I always feel sorry for the ousted alpha male in those nature docs. You are spot on about putting all our worth in things which are sure to go before we do.
I have been lucky in my line of business as I am still being asked for advice and I am always meeting people who remember me in my 'prime' - actually I think I blinked and missed that part of my life - They tell me things that make me realise that my memory is the last thing I want to go.............Now what was I saying?
Your lyric is so relevant David. It certainly will come to most of us and i think its something that should be a lot more widely accepted. Its great that youve brought this to the public consciousness and you really do have a gift for writing hard hitting music.
David, very moving. I have no fear of having my glory days behind me. I was hoping to have a few ahead of me. Managing small personal catastrophes on a daily basis keeps me on my toes.
In third world countries where people live hand to mouth, depression is less common. If you failed to roll out of bed for a couple consecutive morning then you will fail at eating and ultimately living. The statistics might be mis-leading for the 3rd world. I thought you sang this song beautifully.
Wow, what a wonderful and thoughtful review...I especially appreciated the comment about my singing.
I was fascinated by your comment about 3rd world countries...but that goes along with all I've heard and read. Life is really tough in a lot of those places. Yeah, rest assured, moping is probably a LOT less common in some of the more "exciting" spots in the globe.
I'm with ya about the "glory days" comment...I'm hoping for a few ahead, myself! lol
Well written song David and definitely some truth in it all. I am really starting to feel those aches and pains and I suppose they're only going to get worse. Although I'm not doing to bad for my age. Still using my Nordic Track after having it for almost 20 years, I can definitely say I got some use out of a piece of exercise equipment and would recommend it to anyone. Thanks for sharing your wonderful talent with us David. Wishing you a pain-free and peaceful day. Mark
Seems like I can always count on you to send me something thoughtful, heartfelt, and true when I send you my latest compostion, Mark. This is one I'm really proud of, I'd almost put it up there with "Is He Out There?", which I still feel is the best song I've ever written.
I love sharing my talents with great friends like you. You're the best, man. Don't ever forget it.
You are imagining what we all most fear. sometimes when I get out of a chair I start to limp and hunch but then I force myself to stand and walk properly. I realise that time is not quite here and why should I let it come too soon.
You know, I see this song more than anything else as a male version of "Is He Out There"...because "Is He Out There" is about a woman who put all her self-worth in her beauty, whereas "My Reality" is about a man who put all his self-worth in his masculine powers of strength, toughness, and stoicism. Both good looks and toughness are nice to have in the right circumstances, but I do think we do wrong when we put all our self-worth in things that life is going to take away from us, eventually.
You're welcome, I hope you didn't find this song to be too unpleasant to hear. The reason I named it "My Reality" is because the song isn't about "reality" itself...yeah, time's gonna wear us all down if we live long enough, but it's about this guy's perception of what's happening to him.
The guy in this song is a real man's man...strong, tough, proud, and something of a breadwinner and patriarch...now time is starting to fade all that out for him,and he has nothing else. A very sad place to be.
Thanks, Terry. You know as I was responding to these comments, it really made me step back and examine this song to respond to these great comments.
I honestly that this song is a lot less about a man's aging than his reaction to aging. I see the character in this song as a real "man's man", a man who has always been able to pride in toughness...and no matter how tough and strong a man is...age WILL wear that down.
I do try to become the person in the song when I sing these things. Thanks...
Great song!! Most people would see their 'anchor' go through 'what you're talking about' Suppose its usually father or husband(In my generation)A song in 'first person' ,but directed at 'concerned third parties'.
5***** (from this humble judge) for composition in 'empathy genre.'
Wow... Dave your lyrics just have a way of taking us on a trip of your life here. We find out as you have that it's never ends up quite quite the way we imagine it to be, just at a glance.
That the deeper, truer meaning of what life is all about, is the people and things outside of ourselves. That they paint the best picture of us beyond our own mind. We hear that when you sing about "Life's Greatest Prize"!
Interesting that the impetus for this song was Rebecca Shearing's song cover. Why?
Cont- When Bex sings she knows she isn't the original writer or artist. But songs are never about the perfect sung fantasy, the industry seems driven to sell us these days. Bex does all her songs on the fly. Once done she never tries to perfect 'em.
A great song shouldn't top the charts becuz the artist's daddy or Disney or a Studio doing 50 takes to make a singer out one that isn't, made it so. Bex sings as if it's hers & it means something more than some pretty notes. You do that here! :P
Ok...first off. Honesty time. Nothing in "My Reality" is about David Leggett at all. Actually, the subject of this song is a guy I once knew at work. He had retired but went back to work because he didn't know what to do with himself.
He'd tell us all these stories about himself...and you really got the impression that everything about him had already happened and that he was bored and afraid of the inevitable. Really, this song is all about displaced men whose glory days are behind them.
Like I said, though. My songs aren't about my own life at all. I sing "I" there in first person singular to personalize the song and help me as a singer to feel the song.
As to your question "why"...I can't say! No kidding...I don't know why certain kinds of music at certain times make make feel so compelled to create. They just do.
What this song ended up being was vastly different than what I started with. Is that any help? I sure hope so...
Your answer doesn't surprise me. Few know where creativity comes from & I couldn't tell this wasn't 1st person. So you have the added skill of writing songs for others w/ that kind of empathy.
My favorite writers on YouTube have the skills & talent to create both lyrics & music. They all play an instrument & write spontaneously from the creative zone or space where they hear the tune & lyrics sorta of pop out of their heads on the fly!
I would say,,this a Folk Song(NO NO not old folks, lol) and I could even see it being a big Blue Grass hit,,with some banjo pickin and a upbeat tempo then slowing it down a little at a time...And 2 people singing it during the its my reality parts..My imagination is going wild with it,,sorry David I get carried away...Great job,,keep up the good work...And thx for sharing it...Julies great,,shes a new found friend of mine..wish they all could be like her...
I'm so glad that you put "singing" in that sentence. I have really tried to work on being more legitimate as a singer...thanks for that. I'm glad you liked the song and lyrics. Even though neither are about my own personal life on this one, I try to keep my songs "real".
I think a lot of the older generation has had the same feelings. No one wants to get older and feel the aches and pains that come with age. I know I don't. I can't believe that I am as old as I am. I don't ever want to see the curtain closing. Unfortunately we all have that reality.
Julie, you are an incredible person and friend. I truly consider myself blessed to know you, and I treasure our friendship. You are a kind and very thoughtful person, and I'm glad you got the satisfaction you did out of that song.
Yeah, as I was telling Kroneage, what "My Reality" started out as and what it became was wayyyyy different.
Julie, you're always worthy of mention. I feel so honored to be your friend, too.
Thank you so much. Yeah, you know, life really kinda seems like this journey, like this individual trip we all take, doesn't it? I feel a little sorry for the guy in this song...he's a tough guy's tough guy, and he has placed all of his self-value on that and being a man's man, and you just can't hold on to that forever.
Getting older has been different for me, thank goodness. Life has actually gotten better for me over time!
Agreed. This guy is having problems because he can't "bend with the wind"...he can't be strong, tough, and invincible forever. Fitness helps, but none of us can.
Yes, and I like being "down to earth" like that. Unplugged means that people hear only what is coming out of a player's hands...no more and no less. I like that. Keeps me honest!
Hope this song isn't too "heavy" for people! lol But I demo'd it for my good friend juliereed2002 and she really liked it, so I thought I'd go ahead and post it.
I guess this is one of my "picture" songs...sort of like "Better Than Me" or something...anyway, glad ya liked it, your review meant a lot to me!
I really love this song, David ! I appreciate these nostalgic lyrics, they're well-chosen, so well-chosen that I felt 50 years older and desperate at the end of the song, just like that guy !
Thanks again for this tune and you talent... bye from France !
Thanks, Guy, and no, you certainly can't. The best you can do is be humble and be able to laugh at yourself. I am not really sure that the guy in this song can do that...but I sure do! lol
Ouch!
Another from-the-heart truth cry.
Well done, David.
This really is MY reality,
and you've nailed it.
Thanks (I think).
