My PS3 just crashed and bricked today after finishing and playing GTA iv for the last month. Seems like some people are having problems arise AFTER the game is complete. This is ridiculous. I don't see how software can completely render the system useless. I've posted my ps3 failing as a video response.

I'm sending in my Playstation tomorrow (Sony Singapore); they said they'll replace it for free and within one day; so at least they are recognizing that it is a problem. Lets hope when I replay GTA it doesn't happen again; hah or maybe I won't even bother with it anymore.

Wow just got my repaired sony ps3 40 gig which was under warranty and GUESS what ? Sony added the ps2 and ps1 format utility for free YES SONY IS THE BEST rockstar and gta 4 suck becuz they broke my ps3

Just chiming in - add me to the list of people STILL unable to play this game due to the freezing glitch. Tried ALL the supposed fixes, got the patch, got the firmware update, etc. Nothing works. I know a lot of people are just sending in their PS3's for replacement, but forget that.  I have a brand new 40gig model, barely two weeks old. I'm not sending it in just to play ONE game. I'm giving it one more week. If R* can't be bothered to fix their product, then they don't get my money.

Nope, no fix yet. It looks like the only "fix" available is having the PS3 replaced, something about a bad batch of faulty chips. My primary concern is if I do that, that it would likely void out the three year extended warranty I have on my brand new PS3... I've basically just been playing other games while waiting to hear an update on the situation.

Here's what happened to me about an hour ago.I recieved an emai1 from Sony saying to contact their tech support @ 1-800-345-7669. They're replacing my 60 GB manufactured in Jan,2007. Units that have the Broadband CPU, plus PS1, and PS2 chips ,INSTEAD of the EMULATOR chip cannot run GTA4, so they're replacing units free of charge.Call,them and give them the serial #,model #, and Manufacture date to see if you unit slated for replacement.

sorry but that would majorly suck. I bought the 60GB because it has the PS2 chips rather than the crappy emulation. I guess when they say it plays PS2 games, they didn't include being able to play PS3 games

Geez, i never thought of that, but it stands to reason that they would phase out PS2 games, in order to re-release them with updated graphics, so they can sell more software.Just a thought.I did learn from them that, the only model not capable of playing ps1 and ps2 discs was the 40GB PS3's.

i have an 80gb, purchased december 07..i can run it. i'm not sure what chips and stuff i have in it but i've been playing for a month now..pretty far in the game, but i dont have alot of time to play.

Thanks man, but i thought i did have it worked out,however,i have been duped by Sony.They replaced my cPS3,and the game works fine,but the graphics are shitty compaired to the console i sent them.So i'm calling them again on Monday the demanding they send me another one ,or return my old console to me.I've had enough of this bullshit.

The draw distance is shorter, and background graphics are blurry.Also there is less detail in cut scenes, and the straight lines on cars ,like chrome and trim,as well as other froeground horizontal lines are much more sawtoothed.The further i progress ,the more the game takes on that shitty amber glow like Vice City has, where everything has an aura.Niko's Jacket has no refrectivivity in light, ect..............Just like a slightly dressed up PS2 version.I'm dissapointed, and have lost intrest.

I have 2 hdtvs.One is a Samsung LCD @1080i and the other is a Sony WEGA tube @ 1080p.Same results on both tv's.I even set the LCD to game mode to increase the refresh rate.The rep at SECA said there have been a few incidents like this with replacement consoles.I guess i'm just unlucky considring i purchased the PS3 in March of 07 specifically to play gta 4.

Same here, brand new 40gig model, freezes after about 5-10 minutes of gameplay. I'm waiting ONE more week for news about a patch/fix, the if there's no word I'm taking the game back and exchanging it for something else that actually works. I'll just get it later after the bug is fixed, if it ever is...

I called T2 games about GTA IV about 30 minutes ago, waited, and got a bunch of questions: Is your internet wireless or not? is the PS3 connected to a HDTV? if so, what kind of HDTV? How old is the PS3? How much room is on the PS3? What is the latest Firmware version you have? and another question like do you have any programs installed on the PS3 or something, that one confuessed me.

There are probably a few more questions i forgot, but they said they are still investigating the problem.

sony & rockstar need to be ashamed of there handling of this situation I've called them a total of 5times and they try to give me the same apology each time until i cut them off and blast em (the customer service reps) for tryin to run that crap off to me I've stooped to basically playing until it freezes and waiting a while,then playing again doing it like that has gotten me to the last mission and i bought the game on the 28th of april.

My PS3 stopped reading discs after downloading the GTA IV patch. Though I've never got any further than part of the beginning cutscene. Sony/R* fix this now as Sony now has the audacity to charge me for the repair. Now about $215 down the drain for the PS3 repair and this worthless game.

I'm still waiting for a patch, as my 3rd exchanged copy of GTA 4 for my 60 GB release PS3 still freezes up immediately. I have not been able to play at all. I'm not impressed by Rockstar at all, frankly.

unplug your either net cord from your ps3 or if your hooked up to the internet wirelessly, disable that, also turn off dvd upscaling & ps2 upscaling

what ur doing is amazing. im returning my second copy of GTA IV because i got the red ring of death from it. my xbox was 100% fine and never had problems with it until GTA IV. i LUCKILY am getting a refund from gamestop but not all people are as fortunate as i am. i also luckily get a free repair, but this is all bulls***. R* fix this damn problem!!!!

got a day one release 60Gb PAL PS3 and GTA hasn't frozen once in over 40hrs of gaming. i run it in 720p mode but also forced it into 1080 via custom output resolution and still ran sweet.

I just thought of something, the 60GB PAL ps3 uses emulation and not the EE chip. Since there is no PS2 EE chip and that chip has been unofficially identified as the problem by rockstar.

could be, but why does it lock when signed into the PSN? sign out and i've had no trouble. didn't reinstall or any of that rubbish. this does seem to only be affecting non pal/bc machines though.

The game is having 2 issues, as discovered by user qonqer:

1. The minor issue: with newer/non bc ps3's and the online network (freezing). R* said it may be fixed with a patch.

2. The major issue: with older ps3's with bc (renders ps3 blu ray drive useless) R* said it may be fixed with firmware.

Some 80/40Gb's are having both problems though it seems, which is scary.

What i meant about 80/40 both having problems was that one problem with the online network usually causes just freezing, while the other one makes the ps3 stop reading discs (usually cause PS2 EE chip) and some people have had their 80 and 40gb ps3s stop reading discs.

i think they must have turned the servers off here (UK) as multiplayer is normally reported as not available. games running fine though (60Gb PAL launch model) multiplayer did work but would lock the game on exiting. just removed the blu-ray and turned off using switch at back, and put the br back in, ran no trouble. i hope all this gets sorted soon, it does look like an American problem with bricked blu-ray drives though (EE chip?) worst kind of PR for R* damn shame really it's an amazing game.

the firmware update fixes that. it was the gamespy servers overloading the ps3 when connected; you probably know that by now.

I had it freeze once on me playing on a xbox360.

Doing this isn't going to make T2 release a fix faster. It doesn't work like that. Patching needs to be done carefully so that they don't introduce new bugs.

I'd prefer that they take their time and get it through their QA process and make sure that it's a high quality fix and doesn't need any further patches later on.

I'm sure that as soon as the issue was reported by more than 10 people, they had their team on it, and have since since then.
