  • Some great music has been made with Danno's , Cream, the Who. etc.Good choice from Beefheart though. My favorite is the short bass solo in Zig Zag Wanderer.

  • In Memoriam, Don Van Vliet.

  • @stefanodangiolo Yes, thank you. I heard of this huge loss yesterday and it really bothers me. How can this person that was supposed to live forever die? Hard to take, may he rest in peace.

  • Rockette Morton rules, but I believe it's Ry Cooder playing bass on this track...and Taj Mahal on percussion. Nice playing.

  • Dig it,Damn Fine playing of a classic Beefhart Bass part.

    Cheers

  • hey ya nailed it good!!!......"Rockette Morton takes off again into the wind!!!"..........a great job with a very tricky blues number!!......more, more!!

  • Ich esse gerne SauerKRAUT.und tanze gerne POLKA.........

  • @zulisen Beste Voraussetzungen für einen tollen Abend mit CAPTAIN BEEFHEART.

  • perfect bass work on a tune that is one of my favorites - thank you!

  • Spam. This is not Captain Beefheart. Just a Kraut playing bass.

  • @efzt Changed the title of the vid. Was a bit misleading. And WTF man? I'm from Austria, not Germany.

  • @Jackinart Die Austrians sind nichts Krauts auch? You need a Jazz pickup behind the P to do some Jaco style lead tones. Wahr?

  • @efzt I don't think that we are also referred as Krauts. It's true that Sauerkraut is also a traditional food here, but I think the term only applies for the German people.

  • @efzt And yes, this bass isn't really for lead stuff.

  • the bass player is right on time and dosent miss a note plus he makes it look easy and effortless.

  • LOVE the Bass Great little tune. :-))) Cheerful and delightful. ;-) <3<3<3 Simple things make me sooooo happy. ;-) Guess that is why I Love You. ;-) <3 GREAT BASS PERFORMANCE.

  • Didn't know that he played the bass, I know he was with Beefheart for a spell. Nice job,

  • Ry Cooder plays the bass solo on this track

  • Nice job.

  • sweet! rock on man :) you're a nice couple!

  • Thanks dude - That was GRRREAT!!! Excellent job!!!

  • zig zag wanderer.....

  • Don't talk eat..........this one accompanies a plate of Chilli con Carne with a decent cerveza such a Oro de Durango...difficult to find in the UK,but try Threshers Land O'booze...........On the other hand if you want something lighter try a tarte du Citron with a mango milkshake....Wicked !!!!!!!!!

  • Ry Cooder played the bass solo on this track. Check out John French's new book on the Captain 'Through the Eyes of Magic'. It will tell you loads of great stuff.

  • Well I have to check that out, thanks!

  • I very much enjoyed the bass playing on the video. Very good indeed. Wonderfully melodic.

I was lucky enough to see Beefheart live in 1980 in London. I hope whatevers he;'s doing now ... he's happy.

  • Nice ............love the bass.....

  • I just read an excerpt from the book in the latest issue of mojo magazine! Brilliant. Entertaining read. Made my stomach hurt from laughing. I see the tragedy also, but there's always a humorous side to the captain. Look forward to reading it.

  • The Captain took weirdness in rock and reinvented it in masterful ways like no one else. Great bass line replication here. Safe as Milk is my 2nd fave LP of his just behind Trout Mask and just ahead of Shiny Beast.

  • in this lifetime

  • Nice one

  • my all time's favourite song, yeah~

  • It's way up there. It's gotta' be in my top ten!

  • Hey! how do you do that? Sounds just like the recording; are you on top? if not how do ya take out the origional bass part? otherwise, great sinc job.

  • Nice playing and good song!!

  • Comment removed

  • Well done ! Very rich and meaty .

  • Nice work , you got that fat sixties BLUBFumP sound !

wish i cud play bass with my finger , always use picks , which don't work for tracks like this !!!

  • if i had a band, i would totally want you as my bass player

  • I play bass and would rather be a drummer or guitar player.

More gigs for Bass players, .. plus I can't sing.

  • Hah! You call THIS shit? Wait 'till you hear trout mask replica.

  • LOL ;-j

  • No. Your "vast taste in music" is shit since it is unable to get the Captain's greatness. Stick to Fall Out Boy, boy.

  • I wouldn't nomally grace shite like yours with an answer. Articulate you ain't. If your taste is so 'vast', don't you recognize penillion countermelody? Twll dyn, gwas!

  • lol..! The word looks like 'vast' but it sounds like 'arse'. As for me, I like death mental, heavy mental, mental....I've got an arse taste in music..lol..frakkin' booglized baby!! They should stop sucking on chicken bits....jeeze..If there were anything wrong with this, it would only be a lack of cowbell!! ;-j

The world has to put down the REO Speedwagon once in a while!

  • Just love the captain and this base is outta this world!!!!!

  • Yeah bass!!!! Safe as milk was always my favourite album, used to repeat play, like repeat play, it when I was a young thing..... used to drive my family crazy.

  • thats what is all about (lightweight "RoCk'N Bass Guitar!) ur BASS sounds "Fearless" Man!...keep it "rOcK'n! Friend...=0)

  • nice job on a great song!

  • You, my friend, rule the freaking planet! I am going to make a vid of me drumming beefheart soon and I hope it turns out HALF as good as this! If you send me a message I can send you some pictures I took of Don and Frank's childhood homes in Lancaster.

  • Hi! It's really amazing, this vid is the most watched one I did, so many people like it. Really great that there are so many Beefheart fans out there.

    Thanks for the comment!

  • oh my god it's great!!!!

can you tell me where did you get the tablature???

  • I learned it by ear. I didn't have a tablature. But I just finished one.

  • Sure thing. Thanks a lot man, you're a god amongst Youtubers.

  • It was just the right time for you to ask me about the tab. I worked a few hours yesterday and today, and I have it finished. I don't find a place to upload it permanently at the moment, but I'll send you an e-mail with the PDF file, just give me your e-mail adress. I listened hard to the original and I discovered many mistakes I made when I shot the video. The tab should be as right as it gets. :-)

  • I know this is probably a lot to ask but every other tab on the internet is batshit crazy or incomplete; do you think that you could tab out the song?

  • I think one or two people did already ask me about this. And I think that the time is near to do it. :-) But don't expect it soon, it'll take some time as I'm quite busy at the moment.

  • Nicely done, great song and a great solo.

Next time turn your lights on so I can follow your fingers!

  • this tracks got a nice baseline, you carried the solo really well too.

  • Thank you!

  • Beautiful. Sweet Welsh penillion style ... Oh Lord, now let thy servant sleep off the booze

  • lol mormeli

  • THE bass player's hand looks like a long legged spider crawling up and down.

AWESOME tune, this one,I often listen to it!!!

    thanks!!!:-)

  • very nice?

  • great job. I just learned how to play this song myself, i love it.

  • Top tune nicely played!

  • wow i love this song, never heard of captain beefheart before, what are their other best songs?

  • Frownland, Hair Pie, Mirror Man, Pena and many others

  • Get more stuff like this on the album 'Safe as Milk'. Beefheart's other albums are great as well, obviously, but in quite different styles.

  • yeah buy this first than when you've got your head round it get trout mask replica, which is probably the best rock album ever.

  • Depends, I was into everything from free jazz to noise rock before I listened to Trout Mask so maybe I was better prepared to jump right in. I don't know if anybody can get right into it on the first or even second listen. The third time I listened to it front to back was when I think I really started to groove to it, by the forth listen I was bobbing my head with authority and laughing my ass off at "fast and bulbous, bulbous also tapered". It helps to take time between listens to absorb.

  • you would absolutely be the man if you did Zig Zag Wanderer

  • That is one amazing song there, it might be time to dig out the bass guitar once again. :-)

  • Done. :-)

  • A great bass line very well played. Went and bought the album on the strength of it. Love playing along to it. Cheers.

  • good work, classic song, classic bass!

  • Hello again! the "big baboon" in the song was an image on a popular candy bar that was around in the 60s - yep the song is about rippin into a bar of chocolate! - y'all can sleep easy now ya know eh? ;-)

  • Shocking! :-)

    Sounds good. Hmmmm....

  • great playing and nice feel! is that a short scale bass?

  • No, it's not a short scale. My first bass was a shortscale, but when I found this Danelectro, I just had to buy it. :-)

    I still love it.

  • does anyone have the fiery peanut wriggler bootlegs??? great stuff!!!!

  • great stuff reminds me of shrimpy scampers!!

  • Heard this several times on late night am radio in L A in the 60's (KRLA). This is the song that interested me in Beefheart. Have almost every early album.

  • nice bass playing

    i love von bleep

    he da man

  • I don't get it... how is this song possible? It is the most magical piece of music i have heard in my life. I am speachless... i have klicked repeat about 15 times now. Pure fucking magic!!

  • Thank you!

  • fuckin a, i have just today discovered the captain and i love it, on first impression it strikes me as art without comprimise. i gather he was sculpter, here it seems he shapes sound and popular form to suit his sensibility that mirrors his mind rather than the music cultural hegemony and vicious commercialization has stuffed our ears and faces with

  • It's strange. Beefheart's music is dificult.

  • nice bass, what kind is it?

  • It's a Danelectro Rumor Bass, also called DanoBlaster.

  • Nice work bro! Hee hee you're right with what you said about playing along to some of the captain's other stuff. Rockette Morton said that to play some of the bass parts on the Trout Mask sessions he had to approach the instrument as if it was a "Big fat banjo" as he put it - just pluck away like a demented bluegrasser!

  • Great story. Sometimes it really sounds like a big fad bass banjo. :-)

  • brilliant bass. crazy song but amazing.

  • can you tab it?? thank you. Very good playing ;)

  • Maybe someday. :-) But don't count on it.

  • Thank you anyway. Good Work.

  • this song blows my fucin mind

  • hell yea

  • Just makes you wanna dance like a madman.

    Thanx

  • Great job man, awesome tone.

  • This is my fav beefheart song it sooooo i carnt describe it yeah apart from it kicks ass!!!!

  • if anyone can find beefheart doing this song live i will be eternally grateful. great song, nice job playing it man. youve got it down

  • nice great song

  • Its great to see a bass player once in a while :}

  • great song great video good bassplayer

  • Great video man.

Mmm, love that warm danelectro sound.

  • Great playing, What color is the bass? I have a Red Burst one, Great Bass

  • It's black. It really is a great bass, it's really fun to play. Never played a better bass. But I didn't really play many basses in my life. Haha.

    Thanks for the comment!

  • Beefheart's Mum and Dad spoilt him rotten.......

    thank fuck!

  • Wow that's really cool, do you think you might post a tab. I'm a bit shit :*)

    BERNARDMERVEILLEUX

  • yeah i love this song. this is the "wierdest" song on Safe As Milk

  • You're good, man! Your playing reminds me Patrick O'Hearn.

  • it's not an every day thing to see a vid with a dano. do you think you could just do a vid where you show the tone and all that good stuff. so we can hear what it's all about

  • Well done!
