Back when your local independent UHF station was your most reliable source of offbeat British programming, my brother and I loved the female sidekick, Emma Peel. Around that time our dad got us a hamster. We called it "Hamster Peel" after the character in the show.
Our fun lasted only a week or two. For Hamster started making funny coughing, squealing noises, and our dad took it out of our room to die. When we got back from a weekend trip, Hamster had died.
Could this have been done by ABC-TV (U.S.) as a piece to either show to prospective sponsors of the show, and/or to supply to affiliates if they had a movie that (including commercials) was three minutes short of either the top/bottom of the hour??
The end of this clip could have been able to feature a local announcer voicing-over At the end "'The Avengers', Mondays at 7:30, in color on WABC-TV, Channel 7".
Does anyone have ANY idea what is the music playing from 1:28 to 1:48. I love that sound and if I knew where or what to buy I would. I am praying someone out there knows.
@rjcurl OH MAN! Thanks so much. I really appreciate it. Love youtube. I have been wanting this song since I was a little boy. And that is a long, long, long, time ago, lol.
I'm fascinated by the fact that the series' producers never put Thorson into the leather catsuit worn by both Honor Blackman (who was nothing to sneeze at either) and Diana Rigg, largely because with her physique I think it would've caused too much of a stir for American television. She wasn't an endlessly creative actress like Diana Rigg, that's for sure, but she certainly looked the part.
Tara was hot and she might have been different and dynamite, but she simply wasn't Mrs. Peel. And Mrs. Peel was never a cute and cheeky trainee, she was kickass deadly from her first episode.
They must have had a shortage of female secret agents at the Academy when Steed got landed with Tara. As this clip reveals, she doesn't know judo, she allows men to be condescending to her, can only produce a knock out using a house brick, isn't especially witty and always has to ask Steed what's going on. Mrs. Peel with both her arms tied behind her back is tons tougher.
@Tonin41992 He was even more risque during the Catherine Gale and Emma Peel era. I remember an ep where Mrs. Peel was working undercover at a deparment store and Steed said that when he asked where Mrs. Peel was and the person with directions said ladies intimates and he said that he ran up the stairs at double time. He even once had a dalmation named Freckles and told her "Freckles, I'll never understand your sex!"
It wasn't too long after Linda Thorson joined the cast of The Avengers that I realized that Linda Thorson(Tara)was as good in her own way as Diana Rigg(Emma) was in hers. This is a good intro by Patrick Macnee about Linda.
I'm thrilled to have finally seen this - I'd only heard the audio track online once before. This is really the sort of extra that should have been included as an extra on the dvd sets. Thanks so much for finding and sharing!
I was one of those people that couldn't stand that my Emma Peel was gone so I didn't like Tara very much, but now that the show is over I enjoy watching Tara, too. She's part of the history and another great Avenger girl with her own style.
....yea.. i was crying when Emma went.. lol but now i like her very much... Germans are playing it so i'm watching it everydays.. just gr8.. And Tara is really beautiful :P
While Emma is the strong, sexy and emanzipated woman who can take care of herself easily ....
Tara is the cute girl who is almost always in need of protection but that what makes she so cute plus her very very very cute face (especially when she smiles ... ah ... cute ^^)
But that is what makes both of them very attractive ... but if I had to choose .... nyah ... both of them = )
From what I read a lot of fans of The Avengers never liked Linda Thorson but I thought she was pretty cute. I guess Diana Rigg was going to leave anyway, so this was a good change of pace. I only know the series from recently viewed DVD but I like her moves. 2:14 is pretty cool.
Actually, when the fans of the show heard that Diana Rigg was leaving, they made it very clear that whoever was going to replace Emma will have it's hands full, and yes, before the show even aired with the new Avengers Girl, she received a lot of hate mail, but fans quickly took a liking to Tara King soon (Linda) soon after.
Before my time. I was referring to comments I read on fan sites, Amazon. First saw the episodes on DVD a couple years ago starting with the Emma Peel, going backward to the Cathy Gale series, forward to Tara King, New Avengers, then really early Avengers...until I saw everything (even the European promos). Since I saw everything in a relatively short period of time it was probably different for me. I did like the chemistry & episodes of Steed-Peel the best but I thought Tara King was great.
I also want to add I saw a video on You Tube titled "The Avengers Girl About Town 1967" which was a promotional video showing a completely different side of Linda Thorson, very sophisticated and smart (in interview and other performances), even more so than Diana Rigg. It was obvious from this why she replaced Diana Rigg but not so obvious why she made the Tara character so ditsy in comparison. If she played it like she was in real life she would have been the best.
She love to smash men head with wooden boxes....

Thorson, a very free spirit in real life. Some of the aspects of her episodes were silly but I loved them anyway.
