Actually i found that it descends into a black comedy towards the end,not to be taken too seriously

Brooksfilms is Mel Brooks' production company though he intentionally left his name out of the credits so that people who saw the movie wouldn't be confused about what kind of movie it was. Not that anyone could or would, but that's was Mel's reason.
Fantastic movie. BTW, his name was actually Joseph Carey Merrick, but Dr. Treves changed it to John for some unknown reason.
