The FD RX7 is sex on wheels , and has a sh*tload of development gone into it to make a pure sports car with 50:50 handling etc. The devolopment costs of this car nearly finished Mazda. The jaguar is a large grandtouring piece of SH*T. History even proves the RX7 is better and Clarkson is a w*nker..
Jeremy made a common mistake in saying that the RX-7 uses two differently sized turbos. In fact, the twin turbo system uses two Hitachi HT-12s, both the same size, trim and AR. Both turbos are exactly the same. Simply speaking, the primary turbo spools first then when there is enough airflow to support driving the secondary turbo, it is brought online after a short "pre-spool" period. This is all well documented in the RX-7 training manual and FSM.

I would say that the RX-7 is one of the all time greats... Drifters still love it. Tuners still covet it... and in stock form, it looks the business. Based on handling, it beats a Skyline R34 in my opinion and as a result is a lot quicker.
The RX-8 that replaced it isn't given the high regard it should. One of Mazda's mistakes is to make the RX-8 engine naturally aspirated which frankly let down the performance.. It doesn't look as good as the 7 but it is a looker too.

@80spodcastchannel sorry mate I'm an FD owner and as much as I love these cars they are not known for reliability. Having said that I've never had a major problem and with a bit of care the RX-7 is a great car. I would never buy an English made car unless it was an Aston Martin or a McLaren F1 :).
The rotary though got a hard rap due to other components (mainly cooling) letting it down on the FD. The rotary is a fantastic motor and has loads more potential on the race track than the other 2.
Loving that Mitsu 3.0V6 TT, it was ahead of it's time, but I love the RX7's styling and race bred engineering just as much....pretty sure the mazda would be the first to finish any race...due to it's superb weight distribution, low weight, low center of gravity, etc...

I'll admit I didn't know the 3000gt had a twin turbo v6. I always thought it was just a naturally aspirated flat 6. Even so there's no way I'd get one. I'd rather give it an after market body kit and wing, which might get complicated with all them bits n bobs operating the rear spoiler and wing. So I'd choose the rx7. Parts are still in high demand and therefore still made new. Not to mention the same vielside wide body kit that han has in Tokyo drift would make it look mad as.

The 1993 for the first gen since it has the best tranny. In Second gen the 1996 all the way and is lighter weight then other years. Between 93 and the 96 most people prefer the 1993 for drag cause of the tranny but i like the 96 for the look :P
@TheCottonTop The only part that is a "ferrari rip off" is the gills in the side skirts, which were changed in the 94-99 models. The interior of the 3kgt is better than any of it's rivals from that era. RX7, supra, 300zx, nsx, skyline.
@pedrocatalao thats what sequential tt's do, small one spools up for low revs then either the big turbo or both turbos go at the same time for higher rpms. Parallel twin turbos work at the same time for all rpms.
The 3000 gt is alot better for performance but good luck to find any of those in good condition after all these years specially the Vr4 they are all rebuilt and holding with dutch tape or dead ^^ Still i dream to get hands on a good Vr4 in shape the only nice ones i see are the Sl
@flinchey sorry but you're wrong.. you could do a simple image search such as "rx7 turbos".. the part number is actually the same for both. Maybe what you're missing is that at low rev only one is boosting and at high rev both are boosting.. they don't switch one to another.
I remember when i was little my uncle had a '93 VR-4. He ended up wrecking it, totaled it. Was driving in the rain and he lost control, slid off the road and hit a huge tree. Only had 26,000 so miles on it at the time. Sucks for him, lol.

Rx7s are so common where i live but i still love them as people have done a good job in making them look different, i live in south west england and theres alot of fast cars here but the best ive seen is a carbon fibre shell rx7 and the same with a supra and theres a nice 3 door scooby here aswell.
its very diff when we compare today's cars engines with the ones of 90s, today a V6 with twin turbo will give you more than 400 HP. back in the days if was very different.

Which is where Mitsubishi kind of fucked up. in the US we didn't get the Evo, we got the 3000GT VR4. Damn us for not being that into Rallying. Outside of the US the 3000GT kind of doesn't make sense, other than as a luxury version of the Evo platform.

Looks. Ace Card goes to RX7. It still looks modern to this day. The 3000GT on the other hand looks dated.
Performance. Goes to 3000GT. While the RX7 have to only deal with 255HP, the 3000GT has a massive 281HP.
Value. The deck's back in the RX7s favor. Do to it's "Never gets old" looks, people still drool over the FD.
Practicality. The 3000GT gets a stack deck. It has 4 seats, easier to deal with and cheaper to maintain.
Weight. RX7 takes it. The 3000GT is a bit chubby.

The 1993 for the first gen since it has the best tranny. In Second gen the 1996 all the way and is lighter weight then other years. Between 93 and the 96 most people prefer the 1993 for drag cause of the tranny but i like the 96 for the look :P

The 3000GT's looks have also stood up to the test of time. The interior is still better than most cars out there today.

@TheCottonTop The only part that is a "ferrari rip off" is the gills in the side skirts, which were changed in the 94-99 models. The interior of the 3kgt is better than any of it's rivals from that era. RX7, supra, 300zx, nsx, skyline.

@pedrocatalao thats what sequential tt's do, small one spools up for low revs then either the big turbo or both turbos go at the same time for higher rpms. Parallel twin turbos work at the same time for all rpms.

The 3000 gt is alot better for performance but good luck to find any of those in good condition after all these years specially the Vr4 they are all rebuilt and holding with dutch tape or dead ^^ Still i dream to get hands on a good Vr4 in shape the only nice ones i see are the Sl

in the Rx7 both the 1st and 2nd turbos are equal.. not a small one and a big one.. they're twins.

@flinchey sorry but you're wrong.. you could do a simple image search such as "rx7 turbos".. the part number is actually the same for both. Maybe what you're missing is that at low rev only one is boosting and at high rev both are boosting.. they don't switch one to another.

I remember when i was little my uncle had a '93 VR-4. He ended up wrecking it, totaled it. Was driving in the rain and he lost control, slid off the road and hit a huge tree. Only had 26,000 so miles on it at the time. Sucks for him, lol.

@Tj1056 you cant say a car is _________ of all time in terms of engineering, because it will get better. Unless its looks or legacy or whatever. But as a normal sportscar, it is still one on the best handling cars, even after nearly 20 years.

Rx7s are so common where i live but i still love them as people have done a good job in making them look different, i live in south west england and theres alot of fast cars here but the best ive seen is a carbon fibre shell rx7 and the same with a supra and theres a nice 3 door scooby here aswell.

Sure the Porsche might be worth more dollars/pounds......BUT modified RX-7 easily beating the porsche around the race track ...THATS PRICELESS !!

@696969Brian696969 If I'm looking for AWD, space, safer, etc. in a mid 90's sports car. I'm going Lancer Evolution(and if you can fudge the year by 2, Evo 3 just for the styling). Which is where Mitsubishi kind of fucked up. in the US we didn't get the Evo, we got the 3000GT VR4. Damn us for not being that into Rallying. Outside of the US the 3000GT kind of doesn't make sense, other than as a luxury version of the Evo platform.
