AAA ... ROOOOooooooo!!! Love your song. My late (mostly) greyhound used to love to roo, he would start the old Newfoundland dog howling as well. Used to start every evening like clockwork between 7-7.30. he'd roo in the car as well, just for the sake of rooing :D
Greyhounds are wonderful dogs. I've been adopting them for 16 years. We currently share our home with two of these greyt dogs. They've spoiled me for any other breed. They are sight hounds, not scent hounds, so they cannot be allowed off leash except in a completely fenced area. When adopting a dog, think greyhound first.
My dog is quite agressive with other dogs but she is getting better so if they aren't good with other animals don't worry!! Just keep trying they will get better! ;)
@gorrilatape Greyhounds like any bigger dog can get stomach problems if you can have their food dish sit about the same height (or slightly lower) then their stomach this reduces the possiblity of bloat.
@missredelle Actually the opposite is true -- they used to theorize that raised bowls would help, but recent studies have shown that they actually increase the risk. Please put your food bowl on the floor, it's one small thing you can do to DEcrease your dog's risk of bloat. Other things are to feed their kibble dry (don't wet kibble) and don't let them wolf their food (use a treat-dispensing toy for their kibble if they eat too fast).
i personally own a whippet and an ex-racing greyhound and i have found them both very similar in temperaments. i can not fault either breed. i would personally get an ex-racing greyhound again rather then a whippet only due to the fact that there are so many of them out there in dire need of a loving home.
You made me want a Greyhound now, I've been searching for another dog and I've always been interested in them, I guess because my heart goes out to all the racers and the suffering they go through, and they end up at the shelter I work for all skin and bones :(.
I do have one question though, I've never had the chance to try, but are they OK with cats?
I know it depends on the dog, but I'd much rather adopt one only if they are okay with them.
@raventears999 the best thing to do is to speak with your nearest greyhound adoption group (alot are connected with the racing authorities so if you are having issues finding a group contact the greyhound track they will point you in the right direction) The group will be able to tell you which grey will be greyt with a cat! we've had greys who have even been great with Rabbits!!!
@raventears999 I have retired not a rescue greyhound, wonderful friends so much more than a pet, greyhounds that race now have it much better than you think had much better than years ago! people ask me how can I have only one, almost a year later I am ready to get a second grey, warning, easy to get hooked on these wonderful dogs!!
It's wonderful that you have a friend in this magnificent breed,
but they shouldn't be used for people's entertainment they have so much more to give then the pettiness of money and our entertainment, it's selfish, I'm sorry to say but my opinion on racing will never change, not until it's shut down for good.
@raventears999 your opinion is yours and here it is still a free country, I know the people not just opinion, good luck and please post some videos of your own
I wish I knew how to upload videos and put them up here. I've got a few things I'd like to put on here from my mobile, and there's something from a disc I'd love to share with others but I can't figure it out, I'm pretty good otherwise with comp.tech wise, but that I wouldn't have a clue lol :P
@raventears999 my hound was never in dire need of anything. I know the owner personally, we still visit with him, rescue to me is a dog that was in a pound like my son's beagle. if that differs from what you think to bad, it is still a free country, good luck
are their mini greyhounds? Smaller ones that are black with white stripes? I seen a young small one, however, I dont like how long they get. I like dogs that are more smaller and muscular. Like a bull terrier( I think the target dog ), but I seen the little grey and it was well mannered and played with other dogs. You can tell it was nervous though. Are there smaller ones? Also, can you feed them bil jack or somthing to bolster their muscle mass in the legs?
Greyhounds have VERRY powerfull legs, im not quite sure if you said there not, but ,plenty of exersise boost there muscles,so, yhere is no need for Bil Jack, and the smaller breed are Italian greyhounds, the still have a powerfull kick in there legs though.
This song makes me feel bad about getting a whippet, weve always had IGs but whippets are more trainable, not that a grey hound is a bad dog,we just whant to try some thing diffrent.
Whippets have more energy but I've always found greyhounds to be easier and more intelligent you just need to stick to the rule of fifteen minutes only or they lose focus!
@missredelle Why do you think whippets are less inteligent? I think they are all very, very clever it is just a matter of having a heart for training this independent dogs :) I myself have a whip and plan some greys or galgos.
I tell people that all the time - i dont get why people dont know about greys as breed. they are so amazing. i had one for 12yrs he just passed away at 16yrs. I cant wait to get another. anyone that i know that has a grey sings there praise.
