in terms of story, this is THE worst movie ever published in the early 21st century. why does everyone worship that perverted grease haired git at the end? he murders virgins to ""extract their scent"" without any feelings, the movie would have been better if the ending shows him being smashed into pieces instead of a public fuck fest. so evil triumphs huh?
@dividednation44 you need to read the book. and watch the movie all the way to the end. grenouille was eaten alive by humans. just read the book and finish watching the movie, alright?
Loved the dark humor in this film, like whenever he would move on from where he was at, something catastrophic would happen to that place (and people) right after he left. I would never have discovered this gem had it not been for my suggested movies through Netflix. Awsome movie. LOVED Dustin Hoffman in this.
@annggu all he wanted was to learn how to capture scent and create a perfect perfume, since he did that he had no true reason to live anymore, his life long goal was complete so there was nothing else for him to do.
@Dandoification I read the book first and thought the same thing...that it would be hard to depict such details...but this movie did a great job at visualizing the book, trust me. It's a good movie!
it was an amazing movie !!! i loved it, it was very moving, i would give it 9.8 out of 10, only because it had a shit ending, that is the only thing that ruined the movie
@khathejaa Yeah, it was quite delicate and intricately told throughout, and then at the end it was almost like they said "it's getting a bit long now, lets just try and end it quickly". I mean, I completely didn't get when the ate grenouille at the end.
It was a wonderful movie. It could've had a better ending though, but they were going off the book so I can't blame some of the critics for giving it mixed reviews.
@Moonsamy2 What was Thomas Harris thinking when he wrote "Silence of the Lambs", a novel about one man who eats people and another who skins women for their breasts? It was likely along the lines of "Hey, I bet I can make serious money writing this!"
tribute to Bernd Eichinger (Constanin Films) who died unexpected today in L.A. at the age of 61 by heart attack... tks for all the great movies (The Never ending story, The name of the Rose etc. ...). May he rest in peace....
Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, born in the stench of eighteenth century Paris, develops a superior olfactory sense, which he uses to create the world's finest perfumes. His work, however, takes a dark turn as he tries to preserve scents in the search for the ultimate perfume.... woww damn love this movie
heres what i dont understand....wouldnt the women back then smelt like shit? i mean thats y perfume was created in france to hide the smell. How wud that make the perfect perfume?
@STINKYxCHEEZMAN It´s about the bodys smell itself. The one, everybody posesses and that regulates, wheter we like somebody or not, but you don´t really smell it. Grenouille has the "power" to smell this itself. He combines with his perfect nose these beautiful smells and together they create this incredible perfume, just to human, which noone can resist.
@STINKYxCHEEZMAN According to the book, Grenouille thought that most humans had nasty odors, on the whole. Chapter 8: Normally human odor was nothing special, or it was ghastly. Children smelled insipid, men urinous, all sour sweat and cheese, women smelled of rancid fat and rotting fish.
@punkdpoison Depressed by his inability to get people to see him for who he really was, Grenouille returns to the fish market where he was born in Paris. He douses himself with his perfume and a band of the homeless, the criminal and the poor descend on him like locusts and devour him until nothing is left but scraps of cloth and bone.
just finished the book and i seriously couldn't say liked the story but the movie actually looks interesting, can't wait to watch it, did anybody else read the book and not liked it?
@drunkballerina89 I read the original german version and absolutely loved it. Thought it was way better than the movie, which I liked as well. But I have no idea if the english version of it is any good...
@KorschenL is ging ja viel mehr um die Person als um seine morde. erst zum ende des Films geht es um seine morde der Film ist genialo schau ihn einfach vlt. gefält er dir dann
@KorschenL Because it's disgusting and perverse. It's a terribly dark story, but one of obsession and a world which likely we've given little thought, despite its ubiquity. It draws you into Jean-Baptiste's life. A little, I imagine, like the perfume he would make - mysterious and unknowable, but intoxicating all the same.
@KorschenL Certainly, but the majority of us are able to separate fact from fiction. Many works contain murder, theft, rape, treachery etc, but it's unlikely the reader or viewer would condone these in real life! The fact that the work offends one's morals has little to do with how good it is.
So when the fact, how much the work offends one's morals, has little to do with how good it is, how do you than determine that it's good?? Because I think that the book is written bad and the story is just "beep" with little sence in it!...I haven't saw the film yet.
@KorschenL Personally, I enjoyed it. I thought it brilliantly explored the realm of smell, which I would otherwise have deemed impossible with language. It had an interesting storyline that drew me in, I liked the descriptions of perfume-making, the reconstruction of an old Paris with details that are often lacking in modern works set in that era, and I found the ending passable, if a but overdone. There's a kind of wry humour to the disasters that haunt him. You may have felt differently.
No no, you're right about the positive aspects of the book. But I still think that the success of this book is caused by the fact, that most people have read it because of the unmorally content in it. ..."The Story of a Murderer"...Do you think that, if the writer had omitted the unmorally things, it would be a bestseller? I've read it in the original language and my opinion is that it's boring and that the story is evident. Well, it's just my opinion.
Just watched in the night and loved it!!! truly a fantastic movie but the end was quite disturbing to me... anybody would like to explain why he finished himself like that???
this trailer is kinda off leading...it makes it look like a criminal movie (like a really gross and disturbing one) when this movie is romance at it`s darkest meanings... a true masterpiece....it turns upside down your moral values and makes you love him (trying not to be a spoiler)
