  • Apparently London Underground are using a Sparrow Hawk to keep pigeons out of some of their train sheds.

  • that's no kestrel

  • Kestrel lol

  • My in-laws garden has two of these, they pluck & eat pigeon prey, then squabble

  • It's a female sparrowhawk

  • just shut up.and stop blabbing on.

  • The hawk wasted most of the kill.

  • I see this every few months in my garden. Sparrow-hawks are extremely common in S.England now.

  • Nice. We have a problem with pigeons hanging out and nesting in an appliance storage warehouse where I work. Well, a Kestrel figured out that Pigeons make easy lunch if it can get them cornered inside. I watched one eat a pigeon one day, it was fascinating. It sat there for hours munching on the pigeon, and it was so full that it actually roosted in the warehouse for the night. It still comes back from time to time to snack. Nice to see nature in action.

  • Very impressive capture.

  • THE FEATHERS SAY IT WAS YOUNG AND AN EASY TARGET

  • 3 people have no clue about nature!

  • It's ofc a Sparrow Hawk, and Sparrow Hawks can take pretty big prey thanks to their long legs. Usually they kill birds like blackbirds, song thrush and smaller ones, but they can also kill bigger prey like magpies or pigeons if they have to.

  • Male Sparrow hawk

  • You can never completely rule out non-native species. The Uk has a large population of pet birds and falconry birds and some regularly end up lost and hang around people and gardens.

This looks like sparrowhawk to me.

I've filmed a male sparrowhawk (they're a bit smaller) bringing prey to a female he was trying to impress while she was nestbuilding in a wood. He never brought anything in as big as a pigeon.

  • This is a Sparrowhawk for two very good reasons. First, there are no Cooper Hawks in Europe; it is a North American raptor. Second, look at the color of the eye of the bird, it is completely wrong for a Cooper Hawk. Sparrowhawks are not the same size as Sparrows and I suggest vmc 1953 goes away and familiarises his/her self with the local library section on wild bird books.

  • nice clear video of a FEMALE SPARROWHAWK! :)

  • It is a female sparrow hawk.

  • its not a sparrow hawk ( american kestrel)

Way too big! The Sparrow hawk is about the size of a small Pigeon or Dove Are there any Sharp Shinned in UK? Looks like a Coopers or Sharp Shinned.

  • Comment removed

  • @4luvfishing No Cooper's hawks in the UK. It's a female sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus). In The States the name is also used for the American kestrel (a falcon. The name hawk is not used for falcons in the UK).

  • @jerrygreg2

hmm, so that is the cooper's hawk of the UK.

  • @4luvfishing It's very similar but I'd say the colour difference between ♂ & ♀ sparrowhawk is more pronounced with the ♂ having greyer upperparts and redder barring on the underparts than the female. The size is more like a large sharp-shinned hawk with the ♀ being about the size of a small ♂ Cooper's hawk. ♂ sparrowhawks do prey on pigeons too but have a tendency to pluck and eat them alive! Damn nature, you scary!

  • @4luvfishing There are no Coopers hawks in the UK. It is a Female Sparrowhak

  • "IT'S RECORDING!" - that impudent retort would get you a crack around the head in my household! Damn cheeky, spoilt, ungrateful kids.. bah!

  • @MrDenizen wtf is up your arse?

  • why does bloke at beginin say its a kestrel?

  • besatly bird. I've shot a few molesting some of the smaller birds

  • @morchards1 in the uk?

  • beastly birds. I've shot a few which molested some of the smaller birds

  • sadly , this is the circle of life lol , ( food chain)

  • its a massive pigeon! ha!

  • This is a sparrowhawk not a kestral

  • Comment removed

  • its a sparrow hawk one ate a white dove in my garden last night i filmed it

  • this is fuckin sickk!!!!

    kill the fuckin hawkss!!

  • Danny1Northmolton, grow the fuck up.

  • looks too large for a sparrow hawk/kestrel i would say its a coopers hawk, kestrel are smaller than a pigeon

  • its a sparrowhawk for sure, kestrels are nothing like these

  • I just found out that a European Sparrowhawk/ Kestrel looks like that, so I'm confident it is a Kestrel.

  • It sure looks like a Coopers Hawk to me. A Kestral or Sparrow Hawk has a tail and wings close to the same length. This bird is a Cooper.

  • its a female sparrowhawk,lovely natural footage,and quincy like commentary,well done mate

  • beatiful film. just filmed one in my garden eating a song thrush.

i 'knew' the exact thrush too, as it had been visiting the birdtable for months, so it was sad it got it.

how they catch birds is beyond me, they are so fast

think its a female. wood pigeon are about the limit for a sparrowhawk - bein much heavier at 500grams compared to the female hawks 300 grams. males are only 150 grams so pigeon is too big. females prefer blackbird sized prey, males finch/robin sized.

  • Comment removed

  • @brad5brad5 its a sparra hawk lad , dont comment wen ya no fuk all.

  • its a sparrow hawk... your just an idiot, a peregrine falcon is much more of a distinctive white and black

  • title should be.....sparrow hawk not in action or after action like post coitus

  • LOL "is it a baby pigeon?" "NO ITS A MASSIVE PIGEON!" lol so funny nice to see natural bird of prey. In UK good good.

  • that's not a regular pigeon it's a wood pigeon city pigeons usally sit on wire they don't sit on trees

  • it's a male sparrowhawk

  • I had one in the garden this morning and I thought it was a Kestrel too, especially as I live in Yorkshire with lots of Kes' about!!

  • Dad's are always right.

  • Sparrow hawks and Kestrels are frequently confused. Their similar size and coloration add to this. American kestrel aka Falco sparverius is a true falcon. The Sparrow hawk aka, A. Nanus or A. Castanilius are broad wings, or Hawks albeit small ones. As for Kestrels only eating small rodents or voles, No. I hunt with Kestrels they take Doves and Quail. I also have a Chestnut flanked Sparrow Hawk. It can down the same with the addition of Grouse. And have on occasion down Pheasant. Cool birds.

  • It's an albtratros. lol

  • Hawks thought : YOINK :D

  • OK, so we all know it's a Sparrowhawk, give the guy a break. The important thing is that he recorded it .They are the wildest of the wild and a fantastic hunter as demonstrated here. They seldom fail to kill when locked on a target, even one as big as itself, as this pigeon found out.

  • chunky169: Dude, do you even bother reading video titles or descriptions?

Yes, he called it a kestrel in the video, but in the description he clearly says "you will hear me refer to the Sparrow hawk as a Kestrel as i was not sure what it was."

Even if you're one of the 90% of YouTube users that ignore video descriptions (which is pretty boneheaded anyway), you'd think that seeing a video labeled "SPARROW HAWK IN ACTION".would clue you in.

I think you just wanted an excuse to be a jerk.

  • i fished months seasons at loughs before you start get funny, last guy expect to spot a thing was me,i caught a magpies feather a bird half it size nailed it mid air,i never seen that my life .just lets say these birds do exist because dip of hill random nature they didnt spot human presents :)to be true

  • Just had one eating bugs out of our garden, not as exciting as a live kill but the crows went very silent and sat in the tree tops in fear for hours.

Not a squirrel or dove to be seen when these guys cruise in the bush.

  • Very nice! In the states here, got a number of bird feeders, Finches, Cardinals, Doves (pigeons). Watched Sparrow Hawks swoop down and grab them/eat before. Incredible site to see. :)

  • i thought i saw a pussy cat i did did see a pussy cat

  • you are an arse nick

  • Amazing the Sparrow hawk just took it's head great vid and exellant commentary 5/5 ^_^

  • i kno he knows its a sparrow hawk now but its reeli annoying watcin the vid and he keeps sayin it a kestrel llol

  • it was a sparrowhawk.. kestrels eat small mice n insects, voles etc, sparrowhawks eat other birds, kestrel is a falcon n a sparrowhawk is a hawk, n u can see kestrels hovering for there prey aswell

  • wow nice ommentry your the next david attenborought :)

  • Omg id love to see a cat pounce out of nowhere XD

  • Nature at it's finest

  • It must be an Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus because it´s recorded in GBR !!!

  • That is really quite awesome, where did you actually see this?

    This is Wil BTW

  • This is in my back garden in Gloucestershire, England.

An area called the Forest of Dean for anyone else who was wondering.

Wil as in from Plymouth Uni Wil?

  • Wil as in uni Wil yes

  • Thats a Sharp-Shinned hawk.... Accipiter striatus I believe. Only other possibility is a coopers hawk and that tail looks like a sharp-shinned! Kestrel ROFL

  • I just seen one of these in the flesh on my roof eating a pigeon.

  • no its superman!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the narrator has a nice accent. is it cornish?

it is exciting to think that a sparrowhawk is capable of killing a wood pigeon.

  • that's not a kestrel. That's a sharp shinned hawk.

  • And its sitting on a deer....

  • haha owned

  • its a goshawk.

  • that is not a sparrow hawk much to large. the proof is there with the pigeon because you can tell from the ratio of kestrel to pigeon. good feeding vid though.

  • in the UK the sparrowhawk is referred to the sharp shinned hawk in america where i think u are living,a sparrow hawk is a american kestrel so hes right if he lives in the UK.

  • Wrong. There are Eurasian kestrels in the UK and they are called Kestrels Sparrow hawks are the like our sharpshins or coopers. Thats a sparrow hawk becuase the Female Eurasian kestrel I had was half the size of a pigeon.

  • its deffo a sparrowhawk

  • Sparrowhawk!

  • Looks like a goshawk to me

  • i like the stick poking you did! legendary!

  • Definitely a sparrowhawk. The two white spots on the neck are typical for an adult sparrow hawk. What is very special with this video is the fact that sparrowhawks rarely go for pigeons as the are a little too big for the. They are favourites for gosehawks while the sparrowhawks usualy take the smal birds instead.

However this seems to be one of the few cases of sparrowhawk attacks on pidgeons. Awesome!!!

  • retard

i wish it was u under the hawks feet hahha

  • Glad that not my pigeon

  • thats no kestrel

  • <:3 um that looks much more like a male peregrine...but the white spots on the back make me a bit uncertain.

  • haha this guy thinks he is some bird wordsmith

shut up with the kestral and the scavengers

    hahaa moron

  • Stop calling it a bloody kestrel will ya! lol

  • That's...that's... .that's.....Speckled Jim!!! That 'orrible great 'awk 'as munched me beloved pidgeon-Speckled Jim. He was the pride of me flock. Oh can't some scientist somewhere do something genetically to them sparrow'awks that turns 'em into vegetarians; so they chase and catch carrots and not innocent birds. There's a Bald Eagle in America that now only eats veggie-burgers, so that's a start!

  • No more arguing!! Its a Harpy Eagle with a 3 toed sloth. You can tell by the 3inch hind claw and legs thicker than a mans thumb....

  • Ha ha. Epic!

  • It was a male sparrowhawk. Unusual males taking such large prey as pigeon. Females have no problem because they are almost twice the size of the male. Well done filming & posting it.

  • thats a femail mailes have orange on there brest bit

  • You're right. I see it's slate grey not brown as first thought. But sparrowhawks with orange tint on their fronts are immatures, those up to a year old. If you're in your dad's car & a bird comes out in front flying just inches above the ground it will be a sparrowhawk. They've learned noise of cars flush out other birds. And the sparrowhawk's ready to pounce. It's an awesome display of flying,it skims over the road just in front of the car, dodging outlying branches like some cartoon character.

  • I meant brown, not slate grey as first thought. Sorry, must be one of my three brain cells playing up.

  • Accipiter nisus. European Sparrowhawk.

You must have came out to soon as she never got a feed if you left it there she possibly came back

  • OK, the bird is of the genus Accipiter, you can tell by the barring on the tail and the beak shape. Kestrels are of the geuns Falco (which makes the falcons, like Peregrines). The choice is 'cooper's hawk' (Accipiter cooperii) or 'sparrowhawk' (Accipiter velox). If this is North America, it's a coops. If it's England (the speaker sounds British) it's a Sparrowhawk (which is different from a Kestrel).

I know this, because I am both a falconer, and an ornithologist. Either way, good video.

  • The hawk is a Female SparrowHawk. The bird it cought looks like a juvenile wood pigeon. its definately a female sparrow hawk as a male would be smaller than the pigeon. this hawk was approx same size if not slightly bigger so defo a female sparrowhawk.

  • thats not a hawk its a paragrin falcon

  • its a sparrowhawk u retard. a peregrin falcon is twice that size

  • Now now east, its ovb a "paragrin" lol

  • no its not a peregrine lol lol

  • .....i was taking the piss fo..... oh never mind.

  • yes i know tht ya eejit lol

  • where is this taken?

  • aaaaw feel sorry 4 dat pigeon

  • I get a lot of Sparrow hawks in my garden. I read in the paper this woman thinks that song birds ect are dying coz conservationist are putting them on the increase its rubbish there natural habitat are going.

  • definatly a coops

  • That iZ A Kestrel ,. The Only Birds Of Prey We Get In Little Towns / Cities Are Kestrels Sparrow Hawks N Peregrine Falcons ,. And That Raptor iZ A Sparrow Hawk ,.

  • this is a cooper's hawk.

  • we dont have coopers hawks in the uk this is a musket sparrow hawk you tit

  • I love the ending to that one XD

  • looks like a female shapie to me with those crazy bug eyes but then again could very well be a coops by its size the video is not that good so it will be hard to say

  • nice video!!

  • generally speaking, hawks make litte effort to kill. they get control of the victim and start eating.

  • nice little hawky hawk!!!

  • looks like a nothern american bullswan. very similar to the hawk but it is infact vegetarian. Its not actually eating the pigeon but trying to put it back together, its a mystery of nature, and also why some people know the bullswan affectionately as the nightingale (like florence) which understandably confuses some bird lovers.

  • im hoping this is sarcasm lol

anyway, this is in the UK

  • :-), aye, i could tell by your accent.

could be sarcasm...I dont know birds well enough to realise if I'd stumbled upon the truth of the fable North American Bullwan.

  • maybe it's the famous unknown bird seen all over in ancient civilisations' carvings? lol

you know, the one where the bird is atop of the world banishing evil in the form of capitalists.

  • Thatz Aa Sparrow Hawk ,.. Kestrels Are Well Shy ,.. Nn Sparrow Hawks Are Much Bigger ,.. Ive Never Sin Aa Kestrel Hunting Around Where Ii Love ,.. They Hunt In Fields Nn Shit ,. For Larvae Nn The Occasionally Little Bird Nn Mice ,..

  • pigeons? flyin fuckin rats. kill em all

  • fucking humans, biped rats...

  • Cool video.

Male Eurasian Sparrowhawk Latin name accipiter nisus and a adult Woodpigeon Latin Name Columba Palumbus. Usually the females which take larger prey such as Woodpigeons and eat them on the lawn and males nip in like lightning and snatch small birds in the air taking them off easily to pluck and eat. Sure did some damage to that Woodpigeon!

  • Its a female sparrowhawk. A musket has abrown huge to its plumage and a darker breast.

  • in the vid they mantioned that it was orangy on its chest... that would indecate it being male. But the view we saw i would have thought it was female too... but video doesnt always give true representation of color

  • they are fearless of humans. i got within 3 feet of one on a blackbird. the 'best' raptor IMO. btw, they dont rip throats out to kill, they stab them repeatedly with their talons as an instinctive reaction to its movement. they dont necessarily kill their victim first but just subdue it enough to feed. they also dont remove wings etc to allow them to carry. i cant tell if its a male from the vid.

  • How can that be a kestrel

  • I think this is a cooper's hawk.

  • he keeps on saying kestrel...

  • that's because i wasn't sure what it was, not being an expert.

  • the only thing got right in this video mate was when u said its plucking it other than that you havent got a clue!! no offence

  • Not everyone is an expert on raptor identification

  • It always amazes me how a bird of prey as light weight and as small as a male Sparrowhwak can take such large prey and in this case that looks like a pigeon! Pound for pound it's a pretty impressive raptor!

  • yeah its a male sparrowhawk , in falconry terms its called a musket pretty cool video. is that in the town?

  • no that's up a hill in a small village.
