I have been on that road many times. I go to McCarthy and then do backcountry backpacking along the Kennicott glacier to see Mt Blackburn.

The McCarthy Road may be an awful road, but it's a great trip that leads to the wonderful, funky little town of McCarthy, Alaska in the heart of Wrangell St. Elias National Park, one of the absolute most amazing places in the U S of A!
