I agree, I have had Pet rats all my life and they make GREAT pets. They are VERY smart, clean quiet, fun, and sweet. Of all the rats I have had throughout the years, I have only ever had one that did bite, but he was rescued from snake food, so obviously not the best breeding. From my experience males are more affectionate and mellow than females. My last 2 were male dumbo, hairless and I loved them to pieces. Billy just past from old age, this last week. :(
I would just like to add however, that rats (or at least in New Zealand, where i live) are quite prone to illnesses in their old age. They can get tumors and respiratory infections which can be difficult and costly to fix. So if you're on a very tight budget, I would recommend saving up before getting a rat to ensure that if a problem did occur you would not have to choose between your pet's life and next week's dinner! Also, rats are social so please get a pair! :)
Hey great video I've been lookin at a lot and yours is awesome, I have a few questions though. Are they expensive to keep? I want 1 or 2 but I rarely get paid from parents, christmas, ect. And how much would a decent setup cost? And also, how long does it normally take for them to get use to you and all of that jazz. And I'm sorry to hear about potter, I hope you had the best of times with him. Like I always say, keep moving forward :).
@CSTNgeek They are not very expensive to keep, a good setup should be under $100 for the cage, rat, water bottle, food, bedding and toys. Once you have a setup the upkeep is very cheap. If money is very tight, check on Craigslist in your area for free or cheap cages. I find it takes about a week to get a rat used to you. Keep in mind though if you pick a good rat, it is not like taming a wild animal. I like your saying, my saying is "All things die, even stars burn out."
no they arnt im 11 and mine keeps bting and i dont know how to stop them from doing that other than that they are always scared ive had my 2 for a month now and still no bond my hamster bonded with me the first day and never bit other than the biting and scaredness they are good pets but can someone help me out
@scooter123456ify Please get a friend for Toby, rats get really sad when they are alone. A rat of the same gender and roughly the same age will make your Toby very happy. :) I have two males rats myself, they are so cute when they play together.
@HazelsMew Both can bite if they are not tame. Rats are often better for kids because they actually enjoy being picked up and cuddled, while mice often do not like being placed outside their 'home' and are better as 'viewing pets'.
@tenmashi :OOOO i neva knew that i must get a rat! do ya think mice will like da rats and the reats will like the mice?? buuut mice are cheeper arnt they?? AHH SO MANY QUESTIONS
Thats true about the biting thing. I've never had a rat, but a friend of mine had a couple of hamsters and whenever I tried to pet them they bit me! :( I've always wanted a rat but my mom thinks they're disgusting and never let me have one. (note; When I'm out of the house, I'm getting a rat. :) )
@MuffinGirl94 go for it. My mom was a little shifty over the idea of getting rats, until we let her play with it...then found it was pregnant and we began breeding them ^^ But yes, they are VERY sweet, i have had probably over 30 and none of which has ever tried to bite me.
Gerbils can be just as tame as rats, though they aren't as smart, they are just as caring. I've never had mine bite me. And I've never had any problems with them. They're extremely easy to clean, as long as you use the correct habitat. Hamsters on the other hand love to bite, and run away. Mostly, the parent just has to make sure the child holds the gerbil correctly.
I had a female pet rat till the October storm and alittle after that we put her to sleep but I recomend a rat to any one I have a hammy now and he is just like them he is a chinese dwarf.
My rats won't ever bite if I put my hand in their cage. They'll eat out of my hand and lick my hand. I mean I can even feed them through the bars and then put my finger through the bars and they will just sniff it... I mean some rats will nibble on your hand but never hard enough to hurt or break skin.
I have had females, and no they are not as calm as the males. I would say the males are more like older cats/ big dogs and the females are more like kittens/ small dogs. NOTE: Potter died about a month ago at age 3, he went quietly in his sleep, and although we now have a new rat, I will always miss my Potter, may he rest in peace.
@speedypizza I am so sorry about Potter. That is the hardest part about being a rat owner. They aren't with us long enough. I have to 100% agree with your comment as to males being calmer (and more loving) than females. I have 6 rats, 3 males, 3 females and hands down it's the males who are a lot more bonded to us. Females are playful, cute but very hyper. However, all in all they make amazing pets and friends. :)
I would recommend rats as pets to everyone but they are more of a specialist/adults pet, unless a child is happy with committing a couple years entirely then go ahead and get some! =)
rats are very nice but gerbils r not prone to biting as much as hamsters. i agree with everything else rats do make great pets for young children accept the require a larger cage which can be problematic if a kid is responsible for cleaning the cage
