Have to disagree about "not a writer of songs"--yes, stories set to music as did many others. His were melodic. I still put Phil Ochs on the same level of Dylan---topical and yet some great musical pieces. Harry Chapin was unique and we will not see that like again---charisma, talent, humanity, the list goes on.
SplashPix, Thanks for posting this, and THANKS for a polite, intelligent response to a misinformed, unknowledgable, obnoxious comment. Said comment, particularly the claim of Canadian citizenship, brings to mind the old adage-better to remain silent and be thought a fool, then to open your mouth and remove all doubt!

Also I might add Pete Seeger was a misled baffoon communist who tried to pull the plug on Bob Dylan's guitar at the Newport Jazz festival when he went electric for the first time. He was wrong about communism and he was wrong about electric folk music. And I think his music would have been big in Missouri in the late 1800's.. too bad he wasn't born back then. I might add... He's an old fart too!
As for you comment about Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan, the version I heard was that Seeger went looking for an axe to cut the power cable. If that had happened, the world would have lost a great musician and a true humanitarian.
We would have missed Pete an awful lot.
I can only suggest that you listen to your doctors (rather than the voices in your head) and keep taking the tablets.

Well he may have had dual citizenship... and interesting that you didn't respond to the 3 other things I said about Seeger... wrong on political affiliation, wrong about music and born in the wrong era. Seems like he had it all wrong don't it? I saw him at a free outdoor concert for the Hudson River and I thought he totally sucked and his music totally completely boring. Worst music I've ever heard. Totally, totally over rated!!!
So CLdfns, go listen to something else. Don't spew your shit around here if you're so bothered by Seeger. Find something else to do with your time. And really, what's right and wrong? No one plays acoustic music anymore? Communism doesn't exist anymore? Take your hang ups somewhere else.
For those who like Harry Chapin, you can find this song and a lot more on "Story of a Life". Kinda a shame Pete Seeger isn't more outspoken nowadays. Need more sensible people stirring the kettle.
Thanks for posting! If I had my choice of meeting anyone on the planet I'd pass on the presidents etc. and meet Pete if I were worthy. When you said "even if the Nation didn't want to listen", some of us agree with Pete's priorities and objectives but not necessarily with all of his more liberal type ideas on how to get there.
Yes, it is. I edited out the spoken intro, otherwise it would have been too long. There's a good studio version on the 'Legends Of The Lost And Found' album, but I only have a cassette of that and the sound quality is poorer.

Great tribute from one humanitarian to another. I wonder what Pete and Harry would say about us today.

Thank you for your attempt at a reasoned and informed critique. You have failed on both counts.
Harry Forster Chapin was born on December 7 1942 in St Vincent's Hospital, New York. (See 'Taxi: The Harry Chapin Story' by Peter M. Coan)
I think people other than you would have noticed had Canada claimed sovereignty over New York.
