Awesome video. I do not have horses, but love to watch the videos. I see so many things that relate to how Cesar Milan uses with his dog techniques. I have used the exercise, discipline and affection with my dog and it really works. My dog and have a tight bond now, and my husband just doesn't get it and is jealous. That's certainly not my intention. Animals live in the moment, and as humans we should too. I respect those who "get it". Cruelty serves no master.
Did anyone notice the man & horse are working in an open area that is not fenced? If the hosre was not happy, he could easily take off. I have a Lipizzan gelding that I have done similiar things with. This video inspires me to expand what we have accomplished so far.
It's so funny to see all the different perspectives..... You can show the same thing to a group of people and everyone interprets it differently depending on their level of awareness. Spins me out!!
Beautiful. I agree, he could have done without the tapping of the stick, but whatever he does is obviously working for him and his beautiful horse. Whatever floats his figurative boat.
This is a dream of mine to do this with my horse and pony would be just absolutely awsome..... I LOVE THIS VIDEO I'm posted it on FB many times....This is a dream...my dream with My horse.
the only problem i have is the tapping with the stick, in the end you will end up with a dead horse that will not respond to the 'tap', have you not seen the trick ponies, that is what happens to them, everytime you see them perform, the trainer will hit them harder and harder each time untill the horse becomes dead and doesnt respond.
@BlodwynRox I'm no expert, but this is the way I've interpreted it:
I can understand your point, but in this video the stick is not used as a punishment or even as an aid. Here, you see the stick being used as a guide. The main aids are coming from the humans general communication (body language and voice commands). The stick itself is simply used to give the horse more precise aids where necessary, if the horse gets confused or doesn't understand what the trainer wants.
@BlodwynRox (...continued) With trick ponies, the stick is used as a main aid. It commands the horse and it is also used as a punishment. If the horse does something wrong, it is hit with the stick. Therefore, the horse associates the stick with negativity and pain.
Throughout this video, the horse communicates with the trainer through body language. You see the way the horse licks its lips constantly? That's a sign that the horse wants to 'become one' with the trainer and be with him.
@BlodwynRox (continued..) If you prefer, it's almost a kind of join up technique. You push the horse away to make him/her believe that you are a good herd leader. Once the horse has decided you are a good herd leader, it will give you signs that it wants to be friends, and that's when you let the horse come back to you.
Therefore, the horses reward at the end of this video is coming back to its trainer. And because it hasn't been hit with the stick as a punishment, this horse will never associate the stick with anything negative, and therefore will not go 'dead' to its touch. The horse will simply view the stick as an aid, similar to the way that a rider uses his/her legs to give aids when riding.
@Horseylover118 I agree with at every point, exept one. i doubt join-up has been used on this horse. The horse looks, to me, way to happy and playful for that. This horse truly has a choise, and he knows =)
@Marixxen2 obviously you have never seen join up used properly if your reason for thinking it has not been used with this horse because the horse is "happy and playful." Join up is a lot about choice when used properly. The horse has to choose to accept the person as the herd leader, and choose to want to come in and be near that person and to follow them freely. I personally use join up and I can assure you my horse is quite happy and playful
@FredTheCloud yes, join-up is about choice, but when the options are as few as they are in a roundpen, there're little to choose between. I have used join-up myself, and know how it's done and the concept of it. The horse has only a few opitions. Run og submit. Respekt is earned through trust, not pressure. And respekt is not subordination and obedience. It has to be mutual. And forcing someone to rund, is not mutual respekt. Beacuse join-up is about submition, it will suppress the horse' ....
@Marixxen2 that the person should ever move in and apply pressure on the horse. Join up is not something that can be properly utilized with a horse that does not change gaits and direction easily without the person having to move in to apply pressure. Proper join up is something that can be done in any space - round pen, arena, pasture. It does not force submission. My horse is anything but submissive. With him our relationship is very much so I ask, I don't demand. Bullying is not something...
@Marixxen2 ...and you don't end up with a suppressed horse. You end up with an equal partner that willingly recognizes that you are the leader. Not their master they must submit to for fear of being run ragged. You end up being their leader, but their friend as well. Some one they can play with but also someone they want to please. I rarely need anything more than just myself when doing ground work with my horse. My horse half the time treats work in the round pen as play time.
@FredTheCloud ... the horse' natural pride and "noble" being. You can see how this horse allow itself to leave and voluntary come back WITHOUT submitting (something which isn't allowed in "proper" join-up as you call it) The horse can of course "recover" from join-up and be playful, but the concept of join-up is to keep the horse submited and the be a "leader" (or just a "bully" the horse has to obey )
@Marixxen2 Proper join up does not run run run run run the horse until they submit, nor is it a one way street when it comes to respect. When a horse really doesn't want to come in, there is a point long before running them hard when it's time to just move on to something else and come back to the round pen later. Respect in join up is a two way street, the horse respects the person's space, and the person respects the horse's space as well. It's only when the horse moves into the person's space
@Marixxen2 ...will ever work to anything besides the person's disadvantage. The first farrier I used when I got him tried bullying him into behaving. My horse got worse every time he came out. The third and final time I used that farrier my horse threw out the guy's back. Every time my horse manages to push my buttons, I just have to tie him somewhere and just walk away, because once I start getting into a mindset to force him to do what I want, it's just game over. You use join up correctly...
I think the best thing about this video is that the horse is interacting with the man as if he were another horse, and the two of them are playing. This is brilliant in every way.
Why are ppl giving credit for any liberty work done with horses to Parelli!Parelli did not start this,he just commercialized it!Liberty work has been used by so many trainers for so long, but Parelli came along and separated everything into "games" and make certain tools so that he could sell them to make money off ppl who believed they needed these to get the same response from their horse as he.People are broke from buying all his stuff when they could self educate with vids, books, and practice.
now this makes me realise that there are many people in this world that love horses and would never dream of abusing them. this video you can see the horse is loved and very happy ! I just wish this could be the same for all horses in the world.
All you people thinking this stick is for hitting, it's NOT. I bought the Clinton Anderson DVD's and am training my foal with them and it includes the use of a training stick. There is NO hitting involved. It's just a queing device. This guy did a fabulous job, and the horse is amazing.
more motivating then more work. He needs a bond like these two have. I am currently looking for a bit less bridle to switch him to, but I feel that's just a start. Please tell me there is a way for me to learn this technique without spending loads of money!
is he very smart and sweet, but his eyes just look frustrated and full of bitterness.Like he doesn't understand WHY he must work for ppl.The girl working with us now is using a training method of "if you don't do what I ask you to do, you work" usually this means lunging them upon refusal of the task at hand. While this training method may have worked with her horse I dont think all horses can be lumped into ONE training method. I think my guy needs something...
How? How do I get started? I wanted to do Parrelli, but it is just to expensive! Even the videos, but I want this SO bad I teared up watching them! I have one Rocky Mountain Pony. I bought him only a few months ago after waiting over 15 years (and a few months of saving up) and am just starting to learn a bit more about his personality.I know he was mistreated some time ago bya past owner and has been with good ppl since, and
@4Champ2and0 I'd say learn the fundamentals of Parelli then rely on your experience from there. Rent the videos form a library or something.
Above all, make sure your horse trusts and understands you. Get him comfortable with being touched by the whip all over. Dont ge afraid to spend months teaching the basics to him. Good luck!
@4Champ2and0 There are online video rental places that rent horse videos - at least in the USA. I can't get them here, so friends and I join forces to buy what we can and share knowledge. The Savvy Club alone has great info (most of the "old" Levels videos, plus TONS more videos and it's about 25 bux a month CAD. Good luck and enjoy!
Hey thanks! I will look into that. :) Do you know any web addresses? I live in the U.S. I don't think you tube will let you post web addresses on comment pages like this, but i think you can pm me with them. So if you get a chance to that would be awesome, but either way Thanks for the info! :)
i disagree with anyone arguing with the poor man about the whip !!! as zirtavia said the whip isnt used to controle the horse, but to guid it . he is not whacking the horse and they are both clearly haveing fun and mean comments are just mean!!!!!
This makes me smile like crazy!! I love how obviously happy both participants are, and how incredibly playful the horse gets with it. Perfection, this is what an interspecies partnership should look like, I think =)
finally a horse that looks happy & attentive with whats going on.
I find a lot of the times when you see people doing "parelli" type work, the horses don't seem quite happy - but this guy obviously didn't skip any steps in the process!
and... you know what?? The stick is used as an extension of the arm, for the horses benefit, and the "smacking" as you call it is simply taps to help the horse keep "tempii". The fact is, if the horse had a "problem" with his human's behavior he would simply leave.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
boy oh boy , you actually beleive in your shit , Deepak chopra and the univers and all that crap that americans follow and I read this week that it is the most unhappy nation and take happy pills .... so pls do noy give that shit .... horses are not as complicated as these so called horse wisperers make it to get money from middled aged woman with zero talent . Horses are very sophisticated animals and no fucking stick is required with mine. so pls shut up and come back to earth
My response to this is that horses really love having some "domination"; they are natural followers, and love leadership. What's great about this is that he isn't actually dominating the horse, he's simply providing a leadership that the horse can choose to respect or not, and the horse is giving him an enthusiastic yes. As myprophet said, the stick is merely an extension of the arm to provide some physical direction while still maintaining a personal boundary of a few feet. It's really artful!
Not all horses love domination, you have to prove that you are worthy of their submission. Parelli Horsenality is all about this. But a gorgeous video!
I have put this on my myspace page," front & center" Developing this w/my own ghost horse{white} There is only one feeling greater than that when watching this video, and that is DOING what is in the video. To all you out there who are blessed w/ the friendship of such great creatures, keep working to show others what true love, friendship & kindness really is. And do it for the horses, they deserve it!
You know.. I'm on the fence about alot of training techniques. But looks liek a horse that is trained, kept well, and has alot of attention. I have to say, I see a really happy horse, happy to do a task and dance with his trainer.
I love to watch the interaction between the two; I love the horses ears..they seem to have a very good trust and connection with each other. I really enjoyed the video.
Wow! I really have never seen such a connection between a man and a horse. So beautiful to see. Such a connection, as if you speak each others language or communicate in the way horses do.
So lovely to see the trust & companionship between you both.
That's amazing! You really seem to love each other....how do you do that? There aren't a lot of people who can do this, including me. But maybe one day, with the inspiration of people like you! You can be proud of you =)
I simply love the way your horse is constantly trying to keep her ears turned toward you... as if she cannot possibly keep her attention off you for a moment! Fantastic job!!!
Wow - I love this!I watch it over and over and I have emailed it to many friends. To me it is a prelude to how things will be in the new heaven and new earth - When creation will be totally restored to God's original plan. I hope to one day have this kind of wonderful relationship with my horse. Thank you!
WHOA!! i cant believe the cooperation this horse is giving like take 10 people to back my horse up !! gawjuz horse.. you guys have an awesome partnership..!
haha this is amazing, I can get my little reactive grade pony to trot after me and run backwards and follow me everywhere in stride, but I'd be afraid to do too much of this with my little red dun mare, I think she would reach in and nip me.
Technically the whip, IF used correctly is only a tool to be like an extension of your arm.
I LOVE this video. It's fantastic. One day when I get a horse of my very own, cause I want one more than anything in the world, I'm going to do this as well. It'll be wonderful.
I love watching this video because it reminds me of my herd's alpha percheron playing with our wanna-be dominant pony. This is what horses do with each other (and with cows in cutting). It is not necessarily a trick and the horse is lightning fast because horses are highly perceptive (reflexes are part of the evolution of the horse, who has to keep an eye on potential danger and the commands of the leader of the herd.). I guess that there is not much else to say.
i never said this video was perfect or even that it had to be. all it really is is lunging without a line and the horse following him around. and then him stupidly teaching a horse to back into him, that is terribly unsafe! everyone acts like this is the muse of horsey things! and its really not, i wasnt that impressed, except the fact that the horse didnt kick him when it looked like it was about to.
could i see a video of u and ur horse doing this plzz though...tell me when u get it...im asuming u can b/c u said it rlly didn't take that much talent so it should be easy:]
well it sure didnt sound like you read too closely when you replied to me. actually, me and my horse do more interesting things, like i actually want her to do more than petty tricks. she is a show horse. i never said it didnt take that much talent, although it doesnt, its just making the horse follow you and stuff. its not that hard. alas i have no desire to do it and will not just because some person on youtube said i should.
i dont do petty tricks with my horse. did i not just say i have no desire to do them?? i did actually. not reading again are we? actually i can ride my horse completley bridleless and have her do everything i ask. if you didnt care you wouldnt have taken the time to reply to me or comment my vids. lol
i wasnt being mean but you didnt sound like you read my comment completley. its PETTY i actually spelled that right. i was actually talking about this dude doing petty tricks and you said something about my tricks and i said i dont do petty tricks with my horse. oh your welcome. yes because many of those ppl ride with parelli, which is a complete hoax. i actually make my horse work off my leg, not a stick.
they arent tricks. he is showing that him and his horse have a wonderful bond and can basuically read eachovers mind. because of their bond they understand what the other one wants of them.i dont think talent is the right word. i think its more that you'd have to have an incredible understanding inbetween you and your horse..frankly i wish my understanding with my pony was as good as them two on that video! because even when they arent doing the free lunging thing they must be incrediblee close!
My mare and I used to play the same way this man is playing with his horse, only my mare backed away from me and came back, not back toward me. And actually, it is a matter of communication, very similar to the body language that horses use with each other. It really wan't very hard to learn to communicate with my horse in this way, but we had a lot of fun with it, gave us something to do together other than trail rides and barrels, and deepened our bond. It's a safe way to play together.
Offcourse it's really better than trail rides and everything classical, but I would not say that this "play" is interesting to your horse as much as to you. Ask your horse is it "so" funny. He will answer honestly. Here I can see movements one after another and horse does them in a speed of a light. Does this horse has a chance to think or he always has to react like this - automatically?
Hello, mdjidara. I understand what you are saying. I watched the featured video on your channel. I'd love to discuss it, if you would. I have sent you a PM. :-)

and... you know what?? The stick is used as an extension of the arm, for the horses benefit, and the "smacking" as you call it is simply taps to help the horse keep "tempii". The fact is, if the horse had a "problem" with his human's behavior he would simply leave.
myprophet1 2 years ago 33
ottopasquier - ALL training is "total domination". Training for martial arts; to play a musical instrument; to be a dancer; to drive a car...
Dominant ≠ cruel.
Would you say it's wrong for the horse to earn his room, board and medical insurance by "working for a living" as all creatures must?
You have some sort of "button" on the smacking of the whip upon the ground to signal for a faster tempo, more energy, etc.?
Perhaps that comes from someone having cruelly managed you at some time?

boy oh boy , you actually beleive in your shit , Deepak chopra and the univers and all that crap that americans follow and I read this week that it is the most unhappy nation and take happy pills .... so pls do noy give that shit .... horses are not as complicated as these so called horse wisperers make it to get money from middled aged woman with zero talent .

It's really artful!
zirtavia 2 years ago 6

Wow! I really have never seen such a connection between a man and a horse. So beautiful to see. Such a connection, as if you speak each others language or communicate in the way horses do.
So lovely to see the trust & companionship between you both.

haha this is amazing, I can get my little reactive grade pony to trot after me and run backwards and follow me everywhere in stride, but I'd be afraid to do too much of this with my little red dun mare, I think she would reach in and nip me.

Technically the whip, IF used correctly is only a tool to be like an extension of your arm.
I LOVE this video. It's fantastic. One day when I get a horse of my very own, cause I want one more than anything in the world, I'm going to do this as well. It'll be wonderful.

ScrubsBabie434 4 years ago
I love watching this video because it reminds me of my herd's alpha percheron playing with our wanna-be dominant pony. This is what horses do with each other (and with cows in cutting). It is not necessarily a trick and the horse is lightning fast because horses are highly perceptive (reflexes are part of the evolution of the horse, who has to keep an eye on potential danger and the commands of the leader of the herd.). I guess that there is not much else to say.
msityhorse2001 4 years ago 2
Amazing! Beautiful! This is the beautiful play.
BellaLibero 4 years ago
i never said this video was perfect or even that it had to be. all it really is is lunging without a line and the horse following him around. and then him stupidly teaching a horse to back into him, that is terribly unsafe! everyone acts like this is the muse of horsey things! and its really not, i wasnt that impressed, except the fact that the horse didnt kick him when it looked like it was about to.
razrbladefaerie 4 years ago
ok w/e u got ur point again...
could i see a video of u and ur horse doing this plzz though...tell me when u get it...im asuming u can b/c u said it rlly didn't take that much talent so it should be easy:]
rusassyfiedxo 4 years ago
well it sure didnt sound like you read too closely when you replied to me. actually, me and my horse do more interesting things, like i actually want her to do more than petty tricks. she is a show horse. i never said it didnt take that much talent, although it doesnt, its just making the horse follow you and stuff. its not that hard. alas i have no desire to do it and will not just because some person on youtube said i should.
razrbladefaerie 4 years ago
w/e...yea im sure ur tricks r something to see if they r that much better than this...idrc
rusassyfiedxo 4 years ago
i dont do petty tricks with my horse. did i not just say i have no desire to do them?? i did actually. not reading again are we? actually i can ride my horse completley bridleless and have her do everything i ask. if you didnt care you wouldnt have taken the time to reply to me or comment my vids. lol
razrbladefaerie 4 years ago
alright alright...don't have to be mean about it...the lol at the end and the not reading again are we
i nvr said u do "pretty tricks"
and thnxs for shareing evrthing about how u can ride bridle less. thats great for YOU and your HORSE. there r tons of ppl who can do that too.
rusassyfiedxo 4 years ago
i wasnt being mean but you didnt sound like you read my comment completley. its PETTY i actually spelled that right. i was actually talking about this dude doing petty tricks and you said something about my tricks and i said i dont do petty tricks with my horse. oh your welcome. yes because many of those ppl ride with parelli, which is a complete hoax. i actually make my horse work off my leg, not a stick.
razrbladefaerie 4 years ago
they arent tricks. he is showing that him and his horse have a wonderful bond and can basuically read eachovers mind. because of their bond they understand what the other one wants of them.i dont think talent is the right word. i think its more that you'd have to have an incredible understanding inbetween you and your horse..frankly i wish my understanding with my pony was as good as them two on that video! because even when they arent doing the free lunging thing they must be incrediblee close!
TatianaLovesPonies 4 years ago 2
If you don't care enough about someone on youtube to make a video for them, why are you still arguing with them? lol. just wondering.
rapidashrachel 3 years ago 2
This is not dancing- this is obediance! Based on movin from pressure. This horse is brainwashed.
mdjidara 4 years ago
My mare and I used to play the same way this man is playing with his horse, only my mare backed away from me and came back, not back toward me. And actually, it is a matter of communication, very similar to the body language that horses use with each other. It really wan't very hard to learn to communicate with my horse in this way, but we had a lot of fun with it, gave us something to do together other than trail rides and barrels, and deepened our bond. It's a safe way to play together.
xSilverUnicorn 4 years ago 3
Offcourse it's really better than trail rides and everything classical, but I would not say that this "play" is interesting to your horse as much as to you. Ask your horse is it "so" funny. He will answer honestly. Here I can see movements one after another and horse does them in a speed of a light. Does this horse has a chance to think or he always has to react like this - automatically?
mdjidara 4 years ago
