I just found out that Cat Stevens wrote this song. I remember singing this song is church camp and I thought someone just put music to a hymnal. I also listened to a few of his other songs from the 1970s for the first time. I noticed so many comments are about his religion. I think Yusef is strong enough not to take all this personally but use his fame to help Americans see Islam in a different light than what we are taught on the news.

Say what you will about Cat's (Yusuf's) political/religious stances, the message is the same. I sing this song at Catholic Mass. More importantly, I sing it alone in my garden and to my son. It is a joyous song even to my atheist sister. Everyone I know seems to find solace in the lyrics. Must be a good thing. THAT is art.
