Asexuality is like what homosexuality was fifty years ago in terms of awareness and understanding. In terms of AWARENESS not prejudice... before you all point that out. I'm curious to know what percentage of the population are asexual. It seems while a percentage is gay an even smaller percentage would be truly asexual. It's a small world :-(
@wildchik101 In my personal research, ( I am wondering if I am asexual at the moment ) I have come across the statistic that 1% of the population is asexual, compared to 7% of females who are gay and 3% of males who are gay.
@wildchik101 I was surprised too, but there are a few possible reasons, homosexuality could be unrepresented in males due to social pressures, even in anonymous surveys. So Homosexual males would under-identify, also because of feminism and various common forms of sexual abuse, many women might choose to identify as lesbian with the logic "a woman will treat me better" which also would throw off statistics. Suffice to say that the '10%' statistic that gets thrown around is absolutely wrong.
@wildchik101 Also, because it is such a low awareness thing, asexuality may be under represented because of a lack of awareness, so many asexuals may be unaware, or a lack of willingness to identify as such among males. Also it might be even less than 1% because, like bisexuality it could be over represented, people with bad sexual experiences might identify themselves as asexual, just as people who are 'gay ally' might choose to identify themselves as bisexual politically.
@howerut Agreed, I only knew of the term a couple of years ago. It's virtually unheard of where I'm from, you're either straight, gay or bisexual. Seeing a British soap do an asexual storyline would be refreshing. I'd bet the average Joe isn't aware it exists.
@wildchik101 I didn;t take it seriously the first time, It never occurred to me that you could not have a sexuality, until I realised I didn't have one. :/
@wildchik101 Unfortunately Britain will not be able to handle asexuality very well. The Anglo-Saxon world is very sexualised and they will never understand what it really means to be asexual... unlike the open-minded Kiwis.
he should just be proud of who he is and know that his girlfriend loves him despite the fact they won't be having that sort of relationship. I'm asexual and I'm very proud of it! but I understand, it's different and scary. He knows the world won't understand him very well so he wants to rid himself of it, like homosexuals going to straight camp as if it were a problem. BE PROUD!
Even though all the expository talk is a bit clunky, I really think this is a believable storyline about an asexual man that thinks something is wrong with him just because he's different from others. They've either put a good deal of thought into it, or really been lucky. Either way, I'm happy.
I like this, and the exposure it gives to asexuality. But he's not actually asexual, at least at this point, because he thinks his lack of libido is a problem. He actually wants to have sex.
Wow. Amazing. NZ rules the world - I wish asexuality had this kind of TV exposure everywhere. Still, it is fantastic to see it openly talked about. A perfect vid to send to my puzzled friends. "Asexual forever" - sounds like a good T-Shirt line to me!
She's either a very stupid woman or the best girlfriend ever...

@howerut Just one per cent? I'm also surprised there's a higher percentage of gay females compared to males. Thought it'd be the other way round lol

That's really sweet. I wish asexual-sexual relationships were this easy to work out.
