  • And can someone please tell me what happened in the following year?

  • Comment removed

  • @ForeverYoung58 Are you sure it was 1977? I saw a comment from my response saying 1978. And yes, I remember 1977, when "Joe Cool" was their Quarterback. And I can also remind you of "The Bush Push", and about who ran Ty Willingham out of South Bend? But no, I wouldn't want to put a damper in any kind of Notre Dame memory. So why don't you stop being an asshole!

  • @Jiltedin2007 Yes, I corrected the year...that was a long time ago. The "Bush Push" was technically an illegal play. Unfortunately, they never call it...and Willingham was fired because it wasn't working, the team was floundering. So neither of those points are valid.

  • @ForeverYoung58 Whatever. If you can't take a joke, I'm sorry then!

  • @Jiltedin2007 Well...OK then. I sent you a message on your page, by the way. Best to you...even if you are a USC / Red Sox fan. ;)

  • Poor Bud Wilkinson never forgave the Irish for being at both ends of Oklahoma's 47 game win streak. Sorry Bud... but it was over with that run.

  • THAT'S MY GREAT COUSIN!! MY GRANDMA'S COUSIN'S CHILD! I'M TECHNICALLY RELATED TO HIM! AAAAAAH!

  • I was in that corner of the end zone that day as a freshman at ND...it was the most unbelievable play ever at ND stadium. The whole stadium went crazy. That game along with ND ending UCLA's 88 game basketball winning streak will forever be my best memories while at ND.

  • I wish ND would go back to the unis of this era. IMO they were very classy and straightforward. Notice that the SC unis haven't changed much, if at all, from that time....

  • Great video ... and how 'bout that crowd control?

  • @45Seabee They didn't think there was a deranged person around every corner back then. If you look at Notre Dame's basketball team ending UCLA's winning streak the following year, 1974, you'll see Irish fans storming the court when Walton's final shot clanged off the rim. It was just fans loving their team and celebrating the moment with them...a kinder, gentler time. I wish everyone wasn't so paranoid today and fans could do that again.

  • At 1:41 - is that future NFL ref Jerry Markbreit????

  • The left guard that pulled is my lime coach

  • haha...my last name is penick :]

    Marcus Penick...what a reflection!!! lol

  • I was a senior in the student section. I remember pinching myself after this play. The hype during the week preceding the game was unbelievable. A pep rally every night. Father Lally's novena to Our Lady of Victory. And then THE left tackle run. It was raining, who cared. We believed.

  • Woody, you are the man! How true about those big games! The electricity was incredible at these events and the teams were well matched. And, whoever posted this clip, thank you for this gift!!

  • This play is one of the most exciting moments of my childhood. I was 10 years old living in Knox, Indiana and this game was the biggest football game of my life at the time. The excitement from this touchdown was so overwhelming I just ran around the house yelling and screaming. Wow was what a great season that was! The energy of that crowd was equal to anything I've seen. It was just like the 1988 Miami game. Erick Penick was a great one and this video just brings back fond memories.

  • It's an honor to see your response Mr Penick. It's a shame you

didn't get more carries during your career. Along with Wayne

Bullock, Jerome Heavens and Vegas Ferguson, you had quite

a stable of running backs. I've watched this clip hundreds of

times because it's such a great moment in Notre Dame history.

Thank you again Eric for delivering a National Championship Season.

  • Damn, he was fast...for the time, at least.

  • No he was fast period...9.3 hundred and about 215lbs. That guy was a beast!!!!

  • I agree with the everyone having run the 85 yard touchdown years ago it is unusual seeing the run on T.V. I get numerous iquiries about is that you from family members that were not even born during that run.

    Thanks for the Memories

    Eric A. Penick Sr.

  • Dear Mr. Penick,

Your touchdown run was one of the greatest memories I have as a child. That whole season was so special to me. Then to culminate the season in that EPIC Sugar Bowl for the National Championship. Thank you for the memory! Every member of the Notre Dame family is family to me. I will remember your play till the day I die.

  • @caramel55brown Mr. Penick (if that who you really are) where did you come from and what high school did you go to?

  • @caramel55brown That run was a fond memory from my youth; I was 15. I'll never forget it. It was a great season and a great time to be alive. Thank you, Mr. Penick.

  • As a kid riding through South Bend past the stadium during this game, my memory of this play was not knowing what happened because the stadium was in a frenzy. It was so loud, you couldn't hear Lyndsey Nelson on the radio. Never seeing this play before - it took 33 years to finally view it. Ive often wondered what it looked like on TV. Thank You for posting this clip that brings back a fond memory.

  • i agree and i'm 25

  • Love the old ABC college football clips. The pre-cable days before the glut of games day and night. A national game like this was an event, brother!
