Brutally murdered by a mob of monks agitated by Bishop Cyril of Alexandia, and led by Cyril's right-hand man, Peter the Reader.
Hypatia was set upon by the fanatic christian mobsters as she was going in her carriage from her lecture-hall to her home. She was dragged to a nearby church where mob-rule took control. Stripped, beaten and hacked to pieces. Her dismembered body was burned to hide all traces of the crime.
now wait a minute ... oppression of women, as well as "demonizing sex" is NOT a christian idea. It was pursued by moral authorities in probebly every culture that is not extinct today. The chinese follow them. Even if they have NO religion at all. Before the invention of contraceptives and the establishment of a common order and effective law enforecment these where simply things a society needed to follow to survive. Thats why all old societies have them in one form or the other.
Actually in matriarchal societies, the male/female dynamic tends to be different, less selective female infanticide and rape, more focus on family than on warfare. But such societies rarely make the news... BTW, were you saying that the Chinese have no religion? Or that no religion other than Christianity was worthy of the name? You wrote imprecisely, so I'm confused.
The Chinese were the first ever and also the oldest secular society. Other than the rural poor and illiterate worshipping their ancestors and other folk religion, the urban intelligentsia were almost exclusively philosophical thinkers rather than mystics. Hence the popularity of Confucianism, Taoism and Zen which although may have their metaphysical parts are mainly philosophies and are light years ahead of western anthropomorphic deity worship cults like Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
It's pretty evident. One thousand six hundred years of lies, guilt, horror and fear of what we are, enslaving the mind and society, hindering science and culture, persecuting ideas and knowledge of the self, demonizing sex and women,... It's a great achievement. Congratulations.

I am well aware of the unforgiving discipline that it takes to be a Christian since, like I said, I used to be a very pious one. I, however, eventually realized its shrewdness in making you feel like a sinner in order to make you feel like you need to be redeemed. Are you saying, though, that non-Christians deserve punishment simply b/c they don't put themselves through the struggle of austere asceticism?
"I, however, eventually realized ( Christianity´s) shrewdness in making you feel like a sinner in order to make you feel like you need to be redeemed" - Anti
Jeee, of course! Nobody actually sins. Christianity is just a scam to make you feel guilty. Pffffff!
To a Christian it does matter if your a heathen or not, if you practice the "mystery" religions. It matters quite a bit, especially if your intent is to be a high ranking member of society (as was Hypatia´s intent).
Her intent to be a high ranking member of society? She already was one. But, so what? Can't we all just get along? Who cares about religious differences? As for the "mystery religions," Xtianity owes everything to them; since that's where all its theological and ethereal aspects are contrived from, not to mention its Stoic, Platonic philosophy. The only thing unique about the New Testament is specifically its lake of fire and sulfur. Christianity is just another pagan religion.
(continue#2) Though, I did used to be a devout Xtian and if I never read the Bible I'd still believe in it. But this doesn't even have anything to do with Christianity. It has to do with intolerance, misogyny, hatred, and being anti-knowledge. But that's to be expected; the apple that supposedly destroyed us was called the Apple of KNOWLEDGE, of all things. I've heard no love, hope, or reason in your words, Ride. Only hate, resentment, and contempt.
(continued) You're a maniac. I bet you'd give your right arm to have been part of that monstrous mob. Even if she did practice "magic" in her personal life, who cares? Does she deserve death b/c the Old Testament calls for capital punishment of "witches?" Didn't Jesus put an end to that stuff when he said, "let he who has never sinned cast the first stone"? What about "love your neighbour as yourself?" I'm more Christian than you are, it seems!
What does what he did have to do with law and order? It's clearly the contrary. And why do you keep calling me a Satanist? Are all atheists Satanists to you? I'm not the one that believes Satan exists, YOU ARE! Being an antichrist has nothing to do with anarchy, which is what you're confusing it with. Nor does law and order have anything to do with tearing an innocent woman apart b/c she taught philosophy, science and math...oh, and possibly played music.
"And in those days there appeared in Alexandria a female philosopher, a pagan named Hypatia, and she was devoted at all times to magic, astrolabes and instruments of music, and she beguiled many people through Satanic wiles" - John Bishop of Nikku - The Chronicle (LXXXIV.87-88 c.520 A.D)
Satanism would not be tolerated by Cyril Bishop of Alexandria. Simple as that.
Are you paying attention? I'm just another atheist, man. Not a pagan, not a devil worshipper. I don't believe in deities at all. I don't believe in magic or people being "beguiled" by it! It's feeble nonsense to make an innocent woman appear deserving of something so heinous. And why should I believe a ridiculous biased piece of writing from another Bishop with an agenda? It doesn't make any sense! And I have no problems with music!
(continued) This is from page 342 of Russell's History of Western Philosophy. "His [Cyril's] claim to fame is the lynching of Hypatia, a distinguished lady who, in an age of bigotry, adhered to the Neoplatonic philosophy and devoted her talents to mathematics." Yeah, she sounds like a real threat. I think the key word here is "bigotry." He ends the paragraph with, "after this, Alexandria was no longer troubled by philosophers."

Nuff said, duh! You guys lost 2000 years ago...and lost baaad. Hypatia was warned but did not heed. So she got caight in the crossfire. Paganism´s heyday is long gone pal. Ditto with Satanism.
Wait a minute; Sagan lied about her being a scientist? She was some kind of "witch?" lol Lions and tigers and bears, you say! What proof do you have of this, first of all. Secondly, even if she WAS a "sorceress," as you say...if she wasn't hurting anyone, who gives a damn?!

Wow, wow, wow...Dorito! The only thing you can get from my name is that I despise Christianity and the Bible and believe in a life of fulfilling my passions without any guilt or hurting anyone. YOU added the "satanic" part in. And I don't expect you to believe me or anyone, so I'll give you the quote and source: "there was widespread sexual promiscuity in the early church, and occasionally was actually part of the worship service.
(continued)It's funny that you should say "degenerate." I guess you haven't read about the first Christians imploring sexual rites into their rituals as the pagans did. Or that for the first 300 years of Xianity they used to meet in catacombs and secret places to fornicate before the End came. Just a little research I stumbled across last month. :)
No more room?! Golly-jee, Ride, you've now taken us into justification for ethnic cleansing. That "tides turn" argument is very dangerous and can be applied to so many crimes against humanity throughout time and even today. Did not Hitler think himself a hero and proprietor of a new season? Weren't the Islamic invasions "tides turning?"
Thirdly, Bishop Cyril was sorta like the local "sheriff" and was directly responsible for keeping law and order in Alexandria. People truly despised the pompous, upper crust, "ivy league" sorcerors like Hypatia. Cyril warned Hypatia to get "frick" out of town. She didn´t, she died. That´s it. No swang songs, no violins. A new age was being ushered in here in the West, and like Sagan says : a radically, self-imposed "amnesia" therapy was to follow.
Ah, yes! And a new time came of which science (declared sorcery) and scientists (called blasphemers, heretics, and sorcerers) would continuously be told to shut up, get out of town, or die! What reason! What love! What truth! Thank you so much, O, Church of God, for trying your very hardest to keep mankind ignorantly regressing instead of progressing for 2000 years! All hail intolerance of women, unbelievers and science!
(continued)I must say, RideMyBMW, that is the first time in my life I've read somebody defend a person being torn to shreds simply b/c some people didn't like them! Christianity saved the Empire from immorality?! Shortly after being made the prime religion of the Empire, what followed was anti-Semitism, the West end falling in the 5th Century, the Dark Ages, and an inexorable attack on free thought. State regulated crime and tyranny! Oh, yay for the "Good News" of the Lord!
"RideMyBMW, that is the first time in my life I've read somebody defend a person being torn to shreds simply b/c some people didn't like them!" - Anti
Not quite that simple, but OK. Let´s leave it at that. One question : Why do you think the Roman Emperors at the time entrusted Christians with "law enforcement" duties ? There´s a very good reason for it ANTI. A VERY good reason.
Constantine was the emperor who declared Christianity the official religion of the Empire. There was no separation of Church and State. Most of his soldiers had already converted. The Church BECAME the law and enforcement. However, if you're asking why Constantine made it the official State religion, that's a different story all together: it's the one about his vision of Paul and Peter pointing swords at him, he sees the Cross in the Sun and a voice says, "in this sign you shall conquer."
Secondly, there was no room in the new Christian Empire for either pagan "witches" , " sorcerors" nor
wacked out "magicians". Be they scientists or not. There was so much crime back then that the Emperor entrusted Christians with "law enforcement" duties. Why ? Cuz our Christian leaders had proven to formidable " sheriffs", if you will. There was a new "law of the land" and that was Christianity. Love it or leave it. So tough fricken apples Hypatia.
I want to believe in an Intelligent Design, and hence I am suspicious of anything that seems to confirm my desire to believe...What can you say about a society that says that God is dead and Elvis is alive? Irv Kupcinet

"Christianity has been up till now mankind's greatest misfortune."
"Christianity has been up till now mankind's greatest misfortune." - Freddy Nietzsche
Spoken like a true Satanist, that ol Fred. Anyhow, let me address a couple of points that have come up :
The Roman Empire was "morally bankrupt" back in Hypatia´s time. Christianity gave the Western Man a new lease on life...and that is a FACT. Undisputed, uncontroverted. A point that ole Carl seems to conveniently gloss over...
Both sides are prejudiced though. My christian friend thinks the world is 2k years old, and science cant seem to grasp anything not based on their castle in the sky: empiracism. Will be funny if the universal field's missing link is consciousness/metaphysical/spiritual/yadda yadda.
Freaking religious nutjobs! I hate them. And what does "pagan" really mean anyway? The term is often used in a derogatory fashion by most religious leaders today. All I know is that is usually means "pre-christian"
The word pagan originally meant 'country dweller'. They were people who found their spirituality in nature, earth, air, fire, water, and spirit. This of course is not christian teaching, so that's why christians accused them of being heretics, witches, hethens, etc. The early settlers in this country thought that the Native Americans were devil worshipers because of the way they painted themselves. Arrogance and Ignorance has thrived for thousands of years.
Hypatia's 'crime' was to be a woman who was very intelligent and politically influential in a misogynist culture. After flaying her alive, christians burned entire libraries, the only way they could make their views prevail, by destroying all others. Check Hypatia on Wikipedia for more.
Hypatia's primary 'crime' was to promote the original values of Alexandria, i.e. freedom of religion, freedom of science and respect for cultural diversion. Those values were a treat to the dominance of the Roman Empire and the Roman church that was yet to rise.
She had a very diverse set of students of which some rose to become Christian bishops. She was thus not opponent of the Christians.
Source: "Hypatia of Alexandria," by Maria Dzielska.
Hypatia was flayed alive by the christian followers of Archbishop Cyril who was made a saint for thus opposing paganism. Christians went on to slaughter at least 9 million people as heretics or witches. It's kinda odd how christians cannot face up to their violent and cruel history, and seek to cover it up in spite of all the historical evidence.
Alien8ted. I am not trying to cover up anything here. However, the fact is that Hypatia taught a lot of prominent Christians, and had Christian friends, although not a Christian herself. The story is not quite as black and white as you think :) Please read Dzielska's book - which is a scientific account - unlike much of the romatic rubbish that has been written about Hypatia otherwise...
In this clip, Sagan tells the story of Hypatia. Sagan's wife, the writer Ann Druyan, urged him to include this little-known scientist in COSMOS. It inspired me to write the end title song, HYPATIA, for my film, OPHELIA LEARNS TO SWIM.
Your saying that because you like his tone of voice, its psychologically charismatic to you. But soon, there will be a realization and acceptance of paradigm shifts, some which will go against Carl Sagan.
if only people would focus more on this kind of stuff, we would at least have a fighting chance for the future
today my uncle actually said "I don't worry about Global Warming because Jesus is going to come back and fix everything". I am getting physically ill because of this kind of mindlessness.

This of course is not christian teaching, so that's why christians accused them of being heretics, witches, hethens, etc. The early settlers in this country thought that the Native Americans were devil worshipers because of the way they painted themselves. Arrogance and Ignorance has thrived for thousands of years.

the best proof that god like aliens exist is that they have not chosen to show themselves to us, for fear of being crucified.

Did Hypatia deny the holy spirit or something?

If Hypatia was not an enemy of many prominent Christians... then isn't it that much more tragic that she was destroyed by them?
