  • Why didn't the camera man show Allan do that awesome run at 2:13-2:18? Bad camera work? It just upsets me that they missed it, because I would have loved to see him do that. Well, at least it sounds great.

  • Yes Chad is the MAN

  • Is That Chad Whackerman On Drums?

  • allan holdworth shreded before shred existed...

  • @windyarse41

What does that even mean? Self indulgent? You don't know much about music. This is what his music sounds like because this is the music he want to make.

I write technical music too and I don't write it to sound weird or "out their". I do it because it's my musical self expression. Just because you don't understand doesn't mean it is self indulgent.

  • what year is this from?

  • @JPnumber1

    1984

  • wow!!! allan does tap!!!

  • Listened to the road games cassette till it wore out. Hiked into the Bridger mountains of MT to winter camp with my buddy Mike and we would debate the greatness of my Allan vs his Pat metheny as we played em on his oversized boom box. Best listened to at 7000 ft above sea level. Joyful noises. Happy times.

  • I can see why Fredrik Thordendal from Meshuggah would have his solos influenced by Allan..amazing stuff..

  • damn that was good to hear again...thanks beatallica.

  • no-one plays 'outside' like Holdsworth ! but he always comes back :)

  • 1. Shawn Lane

    2. Allan Holdsworth

    3. Jason Becker

    This is fact.

  • @PhiyukYu opinion*

  • i recently been going through a box of old guitar magazines, mostly from the 80s...usually b4 i hit the throne i grab one to peruse. Those magazines were a great learning tool for me...cool thing is now i can instantly hit youtube to ck out players i had only read about years ago. this is the first time i've ever heard alan holdsworth

  • Beautiful

  • i like that solo a lot!

how do you improvise something like that!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?

  • Three holy spirits of guitar

    1. Allan Holdsworth

    2. Frank Gambale

    3, Guthrie govan......^_^

  • zappa and holdsworth collect musicians like heffner collects beautiful blondes.

i guess the vocalist has a squash game after the show. just do it!

  • charvel eh? good taste

  • @ShipsAreBurned

    I don't think that's a Charvel, looks like Allan's old Ibanez signature.

  • @t3hgir

    it is a charvel

  • Bassist is awesome! anyone has any idea who it is?

  • @The56746546 Bass player is Jimmy Johnson.

  • Great tune, but the tapping section two minutes into it just doesn't do it for me. Tapping just never has been one of Holdsworth's strengths; I'm glad he's rarely used it.

  • Allan Holdsworth = ONE OF A KIND.

  • I've always wondered if Allan is a fan of Eric Satie a lot of fusion musicians pay their respects to him as do I.

  • Paul Williams is awesome

  • In 2729, when every true musican is dead and gone, aliens will listen to this and they'll think- yeah, sounds familair to me... ;)

  • @gregorguitar Hehe, i think they will make him back to life ! (and me too please, aliens, if you read it -_-)

  • It's ok. LOL - just kidding. Amazing.

  • Outrageous talent as usual.

  • oh man, how that solo starts.....just chills....

  • PLZ, SOMEBODY TELL ME WHERE I FIND THIS DVD FOR DOWNLOAD. PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  • I miss listening to this on LP. By the way, what is this, nit pic central?

  • Zappa & Holdsworth=Gods. Both musicians doing their thing & would giggle at the thought that people here are discussing them comparatively.

Both have immense artistic integrity & uniqueness in the music & arts scene. Zappa was far more an influential person in a social, societal context (research the debates he was involved in!).

Holdsworth remains a one of a kind on the guitar! And remember that it was Zappa that said of Holdsworth: "One of the most interesting guys on guitar on the planet!"

  • these guys need to get out more

  • Petar, I saw you on another Allan Holdsworth video saying similar BS. You're a troll, silly! Which totally compromises anything you have to say, and totally negates and legitimacy you have.

  • Allans chord progressions and inversions are the bomb!

  • Anyone got a HQ version of Tokyo Dreams?

  • supper noissian

  • Love the singer damping Allen's strings for him at 1:45

  • you know what's crazy?

that lick at the start isn't even sweep-picked XD

  • anybody know what guitar Holdsworth is using here?

    dunno what brand it is.

this song's pretty catchy (has a verse and chorus, etc,) they should play this on the radio XP

  • @crazyedd123 I think its a custom made Charvel.

  • @crazyedd123

The guitar he is using here is a custom built Charvel with a American Basswood body and a Maple/Ebony fretboard.

The pickups (low output) are Seymour Duncan custom made for Allan and the tremolo is a Dimarzio with 52.5 mm spacing w aluminum sustain block.

    hope this help!

  • All the best tip their cap to Allan as being a major influence on their playing. Joe Satriani, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai and the list goes on and on. I can only dream about what 8 year old is listening to this today and loving it, and what that kid will be playing 20 years from now.

  • Any more videos of this show!?

  • Allan Chad and Jeff have influenced my attitude towards being a musician since I first saw them live at a small club in Pittsburgh back in 1983 From that show I have a signed copy of my I.O.U. album by allan and paul and from a show in Orlando back in 1992 I have 2 shows on cassette....Let me just say ..those notes no matter how different the intervals are perfectly placed If you listen to 10 great sax solos youll hear what I mean To me no other guitarist can solo quite like he does

  • After hearing a few Holdsworth vids I realized where a lot of players got their influences. For instance Steve Vai, Eric Johnson and even the guitarist from Meshuggah. I'm only guessing to based on the style and tone I hear in Alan's playing. I could be wrong I'll google it.

  • @GameLevelEditor ...Don't forget Eddie Van Halen too. He idolizes Holdsworth. ;-)

  • nice shirt...lol

  • Who plays bass guitar in this live video? Awesome also!

  • @divyx Jimmy Johnson. He is amazing.

  • @kelpers1483 Jimmy Johnson...

  • @kelpers1483 An under-rated god of bass.

  • hmmm fusion singing. pretty cool. allen holdsworth......freaking amazing ^^

  • Allan Holdsworth is one of the finest guitar players ever.

  • @florafox

    if not the finest

  • Does anyone know where I can find the song White Line with this fellow singing?

  • @54321seb It is the last song on Holdsworth's I.O.U.-Album. But you can find it on YouTube as well...

  • never seen him tap before

  • Jimmy Johnson the greatest bass player of

    all time

  • anybody know what those 2 switches on his guitar do? series/parallel and phase switch?

  • Allan must have had a blind barber or used the FlowBee (definitely going for the Don Johnson '84 look)....Williams plugging Nike, although I question the choice of stripes (I think I wore the same shirt in the 5th grade) but, maybe he was going boating after the gig.....and Wackerman wearing those women's glasses sported by Bunny Brunel and Ray Gomez in the 70's.

  • @19FLA69

    lmao

It all adds to the surreal feel to it all.

  • unbelievable...

  • Amazing solo, as we're used to with Allan, but still amazing.

  • Allan is hands-down the best improviser since John Coltrane. Met him pre-show a couple of years ago, he was very kind and almost pathetically grateful that people had come to see him. Nice to see someone that talented a little insecure instead of say, Yngwie.

  • @bbmusic1

    Bullshit

  • @TheJenn68 To what?

  • @bbmusic1 well its friggin ALLAN HOLDSWORTH who the hell wouldn't want to see him?

  • Goddamn... i'm speechless... this music just phenomenal! I've only ever heard Allan with jens Johansson in Heavy Machinery ( ok and couple UK clips ) but this is ACE!

  • Chad Wackerman owning the drums. Holdsworth's rh man!

  • 0:36 Holdsworth playing a power chord?!

  • @WoWintosh the world is soon coming to an end!

  • @WoWintosh Yeah, this about the closest to AH ever came to "selling out". Another sign: a vocalist.

  • @lazur1

    ?

  • ahahahhah oh fuck, I was trying to learn that really fast run at 0:38 WITHOUT tapping. I was killing my fingers T_T

  • holy shit, that opening line in his solo after the break....total goosepimples!

had this whole thing on DVD (Tokyo Dream) at one point and fried it from too many stop and rewind maneuvers trying to figure out various 3 second lines like that one.

Lots of guys cop him one way or another, but man, he's really completely in a league of his own. Williams sounds great here too – despite the striped blue polo shirt and white pants (ouch)

  • How is Allan playing that guitar with no strap!?!?!

  • @1kydde2 it has a strap but the neck end of the strap is attached on the back of the guitar.

  • i think Holdworth is amazing.... but i wonder why if he plays 10000 notes people say he's a genius while if guitarists like malmsteen play that fast they're just arrogant and boring...

  • @TheDaitarn78 Thats easy. Malmsteen is arrogant (Fact), and if you like anything more than a minor or diminished scale, he gets boring (Fact). Allan is a greater master of music, and the guitar. Also, he is not a super star wanker like many other less talented guitarists.

I hope that answers your question.

  • @upT3mpo Malmsteen's still awesome, though. Nothing wrong with some Rising Force in your life. It won't get you kicked out of the Holdsy fan club, I promise.

  • @YngtchieMusic Sure, I love a bit of Malmsteen too, he is an awesome player, and at the top of his area of specialty. Though he really does not compare to Holdsworth from a musicology point of view, he is more like a glam solo violinist than a wise master of harmony. But agreed, a nice bit of Malmsteen is always a great listen.

  • @TheDaitarn78 holdsworth isnt arrogant like malmsteen and all malmsteen plays is arpeggios, while holdsworth plays with lots of texture and color thats what makes him a genius and those chords, where does that come from? you know he defenitley has his own thing going on...

  • amazing!!!!!! out of space!

  • a great album its shows what alan can do ti would be great if they did another album together

  • Is the offered on DVD yet?

  • No wonder he's amazing - that's Paul Williams of Juicy Lucy fame! Holdsworth is incredible!

  • Didn't know he did those licks with 2 hand tapping....I always assumed he did them one handed....they often sound 2 hand when he does it one hand...

  • I know it hurts to admit it, but Allan put many great guitar players in his pocket.......

  • these are rogains

  • Is that you Dad? Dad shreds!!

  • It's a little sad thought, that geniuses like Holdsworth don't have enough money's resonances.

  • Allan and his men and his music always leave me speechless.amazing

  • Everytime at 02:13 I get goose bumps so badly that I feel crosseyed

  • @EuphorbusBTB I dont get goosebumps but that first run makes my stomach go all churny

  • you can't beat a zappa drummer

  • @rogerthehat What do you mean Zappa's drummer...He played so much more with Holdsworth than with Zappa.

  • @PetarAtanasov87 yeah but he played with zappa 1st thats all i am saying

    zappa and holdsworth rock

    love them both

they both have great taste in musicians picking only the best

  • @rogerthehat yes but Allan is like a fusion improv guitar god....Frank is not really good instrumentalist.

  • @PetarAtanasov87 they are booth great thats it for me they rock and i think they are cool

  • @PetarAtanasov87

But he's arguably the greatest composer modern popular music has ever seen IMO

  • @a1gold176 Really?Who is ready to argue that with me?Frank did nothing but pay some great musicians to form a band and his music is hardly the greatest.First of all Frank didn't have any jazz harmony knowledge wich is essential for a good musician. Now Chick Corea can be arguably the greatest composer in the last 100 years.

  • @PetarAtanasov87

Wow. No need to be hostile or try to force your opinion down my throat. Jazz harmony knowledge is essential for quality musicianship? I DO know jazz theory, but it's bullshit to say it's essential. I got into some of Chick's stuff, but just haven't found all the right stuff. And as far as the public is concerned, Frank got far more fame for his music than Allan ever did. We all know Allan plays things Frank could only dream of, but Frank's compositions are magic.

  • @a1gold176 really???Modal playing is not essential?Every noob with a guitar can make 1 chord songs that's what most rock bullshit is.Who song you can grind at Gm or whatever the chord happens to be i don't see how that is creative. On the other hand it takes a work of life time to improvise natural on tunes like Giant Steps,Stella by starlight and sophisticated harmony like that or one tune of Holdsworth...Frank never had a clue of harmony of this rank and could not play 2 notes over it.

  • @PetarAtanasov87

Hahaha man. Trying to dazzle me with theory on youtube. Funny. Modal playing is not specifically jazz. It's also a very novice way to look at the changes. Frank did have a clue of harmony. Do me a favor: listen to the black page number 2, then Village of the sun / Echidna's arf, and tell me he did not know jazz harmony. Listen to it with an open mind as well; you might really like it. And creativity is all subjective: someone might love the Gm vamp. Who knows.

  • @a1gold176 Village of the sun nice pop tune...and you miss my point.I am talking about playing over improvising on the changes. Now you do me a favour and listen to Chick Corea-Humpty Dumpty and listen how it's done. Many many people can sit at home and figure out a melody on this harmony but actually picking up the guitar and improvise a solo over it very few people can do well.

  • @a1gold176 if you are moron i am not gonna argue with you.Believe what you want.First of all Frank Zappa said the best guitarist in the world is Holdsworth.Second i don't wanna argue because he is kind of an idiot. He coud not play anything he sits writing his bullshit telling people Bach isn't interesting for him wich is the most stupid thing i have ever heard in my life.70% of the harmony used to this day comes from Bach.Invertions, harmony movement, polyphony, voice leading and so much more.

  • @a1gold176 Bach first started to use his thumbs on the organ for god sakes. You can say he invented music as we know it and some moron redneck telling you it's just not interesting for him.I don't think this person deserves the attention he got.

  • @PetarAtanasov87

The second sentence didn't make a lot of sense. And by this person were you referring to Zappa? Whatever. No worries. And I'm sure tons of people dislike Bach. Just as I'm sure tons dislike Holdsworth or even jazz for that matter. But you sound like a kid who opened his first fake book to impressions and thought he owned the world. I know you know your stuff. But stop flaunting it around in such a know-it-all way.

  • @a1gold176 Yes i know tons of people dislike Bach because there are tons of idiots.I know lots of good musicians and when i say good i mean it.I haven't met or heard a good musician in my life to say he doesn't like Bach.

  • @a1gold176

Oh sure...that's why he's so popular on the oldies stations? Shut the fuck up you dumb bitch and give Holdsworth his props. All Zappa has done is PRODUCE great musicians...nothing more and nothing less. Holdsworth is already immortalized...Zappa was never close to mainstream and will be forgotten in another generation. Only Z-purists wankers like you will be left to jack off to his music and you'll all wind up as derelicts to cause nobody gives a fuck about...woop!

  • @stonepolismusic

Wow. MY opinion. IN MY OPINION Zappa writes great music. Chill the fuck out. No one is angry here.

  • This vocalist is crap. SHould of gone into accounting or lion taming or something, imo.

  • Vocalist is Paul Williams (Juicy Lucy original band and Hiseman's Colliseum).Great singer -very underrated).Vinnie on drums?

  • @MacMic333 chad wackerman

  • E T is on earth, and he plays guitar!!!

  • isn't this the actor from get a life? who played the babysitter in Jerry Maguire? .. don't remember his name..

  • bassline!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • godlike

  • i have this entire concert anyone wanting a copy must convert to dvd and you two shall own this its done in japan and had alot of interviews as well let me know

  • Jeff Berlin is always missed when he is not there.

He is a driving force that can't be replaced.

  • @GaryNull I don't miss Jeff Berlin at all. Jimmy Johnson is absolutely fantastic. I'd choose him over Berlin any day of the week.

  • @kelpers1483 - Listen to the first 3 Bruford albums and get back to me.

  • @GaryNull I have. I like Berlin as much as the next guy, but to imply that Berlin can't be replaced, even with someone as fantastic as Jimmy Johnson is silly. Listen to his solo on Metal Fatigue and get back to me.

  • brilliant as usual, and he even managed to get hank scorpio from one of my favourite simpsons episodes to sing.

  • What is the name of the singer? I like the tone of his voice

  • @Paiste01 i think it's paul williams. there's not much about him on the internet, i think he only did work on 1/2 of holdsworth's albums

  • @crazyedd123,

Paul Williams was with Alan in the band Tempest. I had a couple of worn out copies of that one album they did together. I don't think it ever came out on CD.

  • his best guitar, a Charvel

  • i agree with beatallica godly as usual

  • innovation, heroism, valor, speed, dexterity, perfection, articulation, pathos, melancholy sadness, through poverty, into brilliance, regardless, due to integrity, artistically determined virtuoso that is AH-100.

  • jazzpsalti: I love Allan's solo.

My trouble is, I can't find anything I DON'T like about Holdsworth. I'm very happy to have that problem, too.

  • Where was this filmed??

  • Tokyo 1984.

  • Gary Husband kicks the crap out of Wackerman. None of that limp-wristed bullshit.

  • you can't compare..both are different...and you suck because I appreciate each of them...

  • @Chalo77 Too bad you can't manage to

do any critical thinking. Sucks to be you.

  • you are a fake intellectual....

  • @Chalo77 Actually, I'm a 30+ years drummer who understands the difference between really playing (Tony Williams, this clip of G Husband etc) and limp wristed bull. Take a look at the Lifetime reunion Live at Yoshi's, then listen to Tony

putting an actual arm/torso/body into it on the original and tell me I'm wrong. Ironically, Chad's playing at the time of the original Road Games was far more legit.

  • I hate to say it but I don't like this solo. The solo he put in print for the record takes down the house... this was just a little too much dexterity and not enough soul... allan's greatest moments to me are not when he plays fast, but when he plays slow...

  • either fast or slowly each one has its own magic.. ;)

  • does anyone still have panic staion

    it was great

i know it can't be uploaded to youtube

    but you send a link

  • @rogerthehat

you should search for it on Deezer. it might be there in the Allan Holdsworth stuff

  • I know rhetts playing it aint bad!

  • Simply unblieveable, these musicians compliment each other just perfect. Vocalist is great too.

  • The vocalist is amazing!

  • This video makes me want to view a hip-hop video. That's because they play their own instruments, unlike these guys.

  • @mfpdrew you're probably as dumb as I look.

  • Do I get any credit for my sarcasm or was it too obvious? BTW, Holdsworth's playing is incredible.

  • Oh, I see. Never mind.

  • I got it, but sometimes you should just be straightforward instead of using sarcasm.

  • Comment removed

  • I figured Holdsworth fans would appreciate that sort of sarcasm. Hopefully some "got" it.

Regarding the clip, I have to say that I can't express the greatness of Holdsworth's style and ability in words. His playing leaves me speechless.

  • @mfpdrew hahahaha

  • The coolest part at 1:45 when Paul Williams holds the strings down on the first fret like a human capo! Don't think current singers would do that...

  • @drkam6 Probably not as a capo, but more of a mute. The notes are staccato.

  • Yeah I think hes just dampening the strings and yeah its pretty damn cool

  • i remember when road games was the new ep to get it only had 5 or 6 songs we got it on lp for 4.99 at music plus on vine went to see him with jeff berlin and chad wackerman with my best friend dino rivera later after the release

  • Have your ears removed; they aren't doing you any good.

  • as apposed to van halen!????

  • You're 14. Hopefully you'll know if a few years how stupid your comment is. ...hopefully

  • I want a Holdsworth/Berlin/Colaiuta collaboration.

Let's gather the money to realise it folks

  • Holdsworth and Colaiuta is indeed a brilliant combo... I think Jimmy Johnson is fine though, even if he doesn't have Berlin's cool tone.

  • and i would say paul williams (the singer on this vid), naomi starr (against the clock by ah) and rowanne mark (secrets, all our yesterdays) for a kickass line up.

  • Right on!

  • wouldn't be any better than the Holdsworth/Berlin/Bruford collaborations

  • @janderson2000 matter of taste though...

  • Its fun isnt it.......... Yes we can enjoy this stuff
