I think EPICA is a great band and they are still growing in their music, I mean there is nothing to compare with other bands, EPICA have their sound, and that is really difficult in music, to create your own sound. They are still one of my favorite bands =)

Simone is hands down my favorite vocalist, period, but I have to agree with another commenter who said she's abusing her voice. It's evident in this song. After about halfway through she goes flat on nearly ever high note. This song is just a generic melodic metal song written to attract new audiences and is no reflection on the album itself.

@heroesdrhouseaddict1 The record company makes them release a more commercial sounding song, shorter, that will have widespread appeal to draw in as many listeners as possible. It's marketing. Never enough, Unleashed. Great songs, but I rarely listen to them. I go right to the 7+ minute maser pieces. But I've got to say that this song is my favorite single out of all of them. The more I listen to it, the more I love it. The supporting vocals sound really terrific and the grunt section kicks ass.

Scream vocals are an essential part of Epica, as anyone with a pair of functional ears can understand just by comparing the original Living a Lie to the Classical Conspiracy version. It's something that makes epica different, and honestly, epic. The contrast between Simone's thin voice and the scream vocals are one of the things that most fans love in epica. What you say is like asking them to loose the distorted guitars.

One guy actually compared Epica to Evanescence, something about how they would " be awesome like Ev if they banned the growls". They call themselves Epica fans and then hate on one of the integral parts of their sound, that Epica has used since day one. Really, 10 years later, they still don't get it. They probably never will.

Marks grunts and growls like a monster in a "B" movie do nothing for there music except hold them back. It's almost painful to hear and even sadder to think people think thats good in a song.

Believe it or not I like this band alot and own some of there albums. I just hate the growl vocals. I don't claim to be an expert by any means I just know what I like and choose to express my opinion!

It's a relief that Simone's voice is decent here. I was starting to worry that she'd lost her live performance. I understand that the songs are probably really difficult to sing, and her vocal style probably doesn't suit moving around on stage, but considering that she has performed well live before (she was immense doing the Haunting with Kamelot on One Cold Winter's Night), it has always struck me as odd that she's so inconsistent.

@nvvdsn I DO see a change in her voice. Being a singer, and following her schedule via her blog, she is ABUSING the shit out of her voice. She's getting a bit too hungry for recognition involving herself in a ton of projects. She is doing too much, not resting and treated her instrument properly. Will continue to be a problem for her if she doesn't cut the crap. The voice is complex and you can mess it up if not careful. She's been fab every time I've seen her live, but she's flat a lot.

1) You claim there are no "7 min songs" in the album.. well, there are 7 songs which are +6min (one 7:11, another one 8:34 and the last one 9;52)

2) You say the orchestration is barebones.. well, I have to say that the orchestration is this album is too epic, like TDC, many arabic-oriented sounds, and really epic like songs such as Chasing the dragon or The divine Conspir

@nvvdsn Storm the Sorrow is going to be their single though, if I'm not mistaken. Singles, especially with Epica, are usually more tame then the rest of the album. Take Never Enough for example, I feel like that song doesn't really represent TDC as a whole because it lacks a lot of what the rest of the album has (grunts, choir, crazy orachestra).

I'm just saying, don't let this one song give you the impression of the whole album. It'll probably be even awesomer than this!! :)

@nvvdsn Storm the Sorrow is the single and the weakest song of the album, it does not represent AT ALL the whole album, it happens the same with Never Enough and TDC, so dont panic, in this album there is a huge interest by Mark, x10000 better than the last of MaYaN.

About operatic power, in this album Simone plays A LOT with her voice, and sings operatic many times, much more than in DYU, specially in Deter the Tyran, Avalanche, Monopoly of Truth...

But there are less growls in this album, they tried to focus more in orchestra and choir, so less growls but more choirs hahaha. But there are still plenty of growls, as I told you in almost every song, in 10 to be exact, though in Guilty Demanor they are just for 3 seconds haha

@nvvdsn I agree with you. I wrote and expressed my concern about how MaYan was introduced initially as a side project, then it became another full-time band. I feel he uses it as a venue to promote his girlfriend, adding on opera songs to give her something to do to justify taking her a tour. He exhausted himself. That sucks. Epica is what should matter here. But it's really unfair to make statements about an album that hasn't been released. This song is great. The choirs are suspiciously bare.

The singles have NEVER represented how the album is going to be. Just the fluff single. Why not wait for the album before going all hysterical with criticism?

I really like their new sound if this is it. It sounds more gothic, yet less dramatic. Kinda like a mix between The Phantom Agony and Design Your Universe. Still, considering how short and simple this song is, it's probably their "show off single", like Never Enough and Unleashed was for the previous two albums.
