I played through ME:2 four times, with two of my ME:1 characters and two new ones AND I re-installed ME:1 to play it again with yet another new character with whom I finished ME:2 a fifth time!!

Shepard is going to be the protagonist in ME3. Because the other ending is alternate and not canon and means that you can't import your character to ME3. And then, why should they change the character?

There are mentions around the net (and in developer interviews/diary) that you can't transfer/import the game in which Shepard died.

After all, if you played and finished the game, you should have noticed that you need to be able to save after the credits to have an "importable save file". To answer the question in case you don't know: No, you CAN'T save after the credits if you get the ending in which Shepard dies.

i guess you haven't played until there yet. it is the second LAST mission (won't spoil it for you). If i were you I'd just play through to the end once to see what ending i get. After that, find out how to get the perfect ending, then reload and replay.
