@ryder187mac True. But since "Mastodon sound somewhat like the chorus. Impressive" doesn't roll off the tongue as smoothly, I opted with the former. lol
Bands like Tool owe their being to bands like Voivod. The whole progressive metal style is great. I love Voivod and glad we have such cool bands from their style.
I was always trying to make other schoolchildren listen to metal back then (when I was tiny). This strange album was the only one that people liked. Why? It's fantastic.
these guys liked hash ALOT! i'm revisting this album after 20 years i think- i had a cassette tape that had like 4 songs off of nothingface in middleschool(a promo thing) -i'm amazed! i love it again!-the whole album. mathy and beautiful.i'm a sucker for syd barrett as well.
@honestAbe59 lol you call me gay yet you are the one chasing my comments down like a stalker fag. lol baby bitches like you are almost ammusing. cry on baby bitch boy. go eat a bowl of gg soup.
Back in the early 90's, my roommate was into reggae. I was into metal.
One day, he came home from work and told me he wanted to listen to metal, "something crazy" he said.
So I gave him my copy of Nothingface and he put it on and proceeded to jump around in his bedroom for the next hour, freaking out to this music. He wasn't even high, he just flipped out to it and when it was over, he handed me back the CD and said "wow that was cool" and went into the kitchen to make himself dinner.
Just realized how much Voivod sounds like a metal version of Pink Floyd (with Syd Barrett, of course). I'm not surprised at all that they did a cover of Astronomy Dominé on this album.
Snake rules.....who needs no pro tools....just his voice alone....one helluva great band that sounds like no other......intelligent lyrics and a tone of humor at times. One of my favorite lyrics of his "the space cabin is far to small they already made me way too tall, I need a coffee or maybe a beer I been sleepin for hundreds of years". if thats wrong so be it thats how i hear it
SUPERB album. They wove King Crimson-esque abstraction, 60's psychedelia, and their own approach at metal wonderfully. The progression from "War and Pain" to this album is astonishing. They matured quickly.
Great album.I don't know about ahead of it's time though it seems as if people get spacey and weird confused with futuristic or advancement .I would say the year this album was released the real future was released by Faith No More in respect to the album epic as they really did set a new standard and broke ground in new genre's.Nothingface had lyric's that asked question's and was deeply motivated by the what if's and what for's in retrospect that was the question Pink Floyd was asking too.
I would not call them thrash in anyway. I would call them progressive metal. RIP Piggy: the king of diminished chord inversions that no one else would dare use in rock songs.
ill never forget hanging out with Voivod at the BackRoom in 88.. great bunch of guys. WAY ahead of thier time. Most people didnt get them back then, and most wont. Very intellegent bunch of dudes.. although i didnt really like Angel Rat very much.
@SwingingDickOfDoom for me Angel Rat ranks among their best....its between Angel Rat and Nothingface which was best. Both are very good Prog rock albums
Voivod are intelligent guys who built philosophical question known from Descartes: why do I exist? They brought reality of this question to the reality of cyborg who must cooperate with Virtual Reality/devices. Though the question still exists.
Geniuses. I love them since my primary school.
The subject of the pieces found his soul again, 'dream out of the screen....'; it is metal, but texts are the most intelligent for contemporary hard music; music and texts creates Voivod, surreal reality
@ReviewYourChoices75 Under what conditions do we exist/how do we know that we exist? We consider the issue in the context of cyborg paradigm. Today scientists think about artificial limbic system, probably then about all brain. What do we lose at such 'exchange' of natural parts on artificial ones? 'Valves plugs pump to erase rictus from my face'. Good poetry, just associations; and asking about existence come from all philosophy.
@ReviewYourChoices75 (2) Descartes also give us an answer-we come from Deity, perfection, who is 'free from having imperfect cognition'. Then he also asked, not only, for example, Plato or Aristotle. We exist from being with perfect cognition, we're sure of us because of we ask./Nice thought come from nice music.
@BlackHoleUser Voivod are indeed one of best bands, but I won't say that they built "Why do I exist" question. It has been there almost since human conscience has been active, even if most people try to ignore it.
@TheKevinWalker again: and finally this 'subject' finds the sense of other reality; that's why I cited Acts; though I like their later output less, but for me it's one of the best metal band of XXth century
@BlackHoleUser The sense of this song - I had the pleasure and privilege to discuss this and other subject with Michel "Away" during very long phone calls in the early 90's - is to describe what's like to say goodbye to your identity. In some way its the (temporary) death of Voivod (and the true end of album, even if it's the second song!). You may consider it as an experiment in expanding consciousness that went horribly wrong, or - on the other hand - the gateway to Nirvana
@signorellil OK, that's poetry and interpretation may be open-then telling goodbye to identity because something happened, any technological factor started working-valves, pumps, optic box-everything that affects 'me' works-and the consciousness sees itself behind the screen, behind the human-machine interface ('I float unseen outside the screen'); I just was less concerned on technical side of song;LOL would u agree to install interactive device advertised as keeping consciousness to y-r brain?
@Satansfizt it is, but where the hell can I get it? Such a classic album should have been re-released by now. In mu opinion Voivod are progressive punk - I think they are mainly punk and prog (like rush) influenced - I can't see much of a connection between them and thrash in what I have heard, though I know many metal bands cite them as an influence
This was the album cover that you could turn upside down and see the other face... :)
