u had samurai who where royal back in the day and none royal who protected royals and mercenerie samurai alkinds of but the term samurai comes from an equal way of fighting ore an honourable way of fighting like for the good of things and making a right choice when faced with corruption etc
@QuietGuitaristfan It's depends on the Samurai themselves most came from honorable families while some came from the street and after their done with their services call themselves Ronin. Samurai never had the same code as the Knights they follow their own family code albeit for worst or the better.
@KamenGrayz I know but comparing them following their code compared to knights folowing their code was much less tan a knight following his code. Most Samurai just became mercenaries and did what they wanted
@chipsamy Kyodai Ken. He trained in one of the same dojos as a young Bruce Wayne and repeatedly beat Bruce in combat. He was kicked out of their dojo for stealing, and held a grudge against Bruce for years. Years later he discovered Batman's secret identity by fighting him and recognizing Bruce's fighting style.
@chipsamy The first time he fought Batman, it was a draw. Later he fought Bruce, who had to hold back because Summer Gleeson was in the room and he couldn't reveal his fighting skill. When Robin obscured Summer's vision, Bruce beat the hell out of Kyodai. In the rematch (the fight in this video) Batman defeats Kyodai on top of an active volcano. Batman tries to save him when the volcano erupts, but Kyodai chooses death.
@chipsamy Well, no. They were only on top of the volcano because Kyodai abducted Alfred and took him there. When the eruption started, Batman tossed a rope to him and told him to grab it so Batman could pull him to safety. Kyodai kicked the rope into the lava and bowed to Batman out of respect just before the eruption killed him.
@chipsamy I agree. I always thought he was cool. But he was only ever in two episodes of the animated series and never in the comic book, so I guess most people have never heard of him.
samurai don't hide behind masks. he said that because rather than stick with ninja who are assassins, batman learned ninjitsu but adopted some samurai code of honour. he wears a mask to put fear in the thugs of gotham but he is a master of several martial arts including ninja and samurai sword play
If anyone is curious as to why this scene is like this Kyodei (sp) already knows that Bruce is batman and earlier he called batman a ninja. Bruce doesn't think of Batman as a ninja so when asked to "Fight like a samurai" he complies. Kyodei probably removes his mask because even though he is a ninja, he was trained by the same master as Bruce and still has some sense of honor.
ahh, the funny misconceptions of the samurai as a morale ideal to be respected as opposed to an elitist bunch of thugs for the emperor and shogun. bushido is not what it's made out to be. commoners were not allowed to be samurai because they weren't good enough, which is funny given it's origins. bushido itself is not to be respected much like chilvary is not to be respected. these were institutions that most of you would never be a part of. and yes, they wore masks.
@fullfist The thing with chivalry is that in the time of knights, it prevented them from harassing the peasants too much and destroying property (knights were just as much of thugs as samurai were). However, it's a bit outdated now.
OF COURSE! Who would have tought touching heart would kill a man! Wait, thats not possible. I touched my heart when I was watching it and I didnt d--uhhhhnh call 911!
I remember this one. And then he pokes batman in the chest thinking he is dead. But batman put like, cardboard or something to absorb the blow. However I have a question for you... Isn't that body armor he is wearing or is it just cloth?
Man you dont get well animated fight scenes that actualy choreograph the moves right. Im shocked properly turning the fist in a punch,Throw kicks at the right anles.Proper judo throw. And this is like 20 years old 0_o.
@viridismonasteriense I agree, I was wondering how funny that would be if Batman pointed that out to the ninja. That would've been hilarious! Ninja: Samurai do not hide behind mask! Batman: Yeah, but one small difference, your a NINJA!
I know most of you are going to just overlook this, but it'd be a big help for me if those of you who don't, would visit my Deviant Art page. I'm currently doing a Batman Beyond super criminal series :D
@danieljans0585 This scene isn't being played in its full context. Batman was being compared to a ninja, but he said he thinks more of himself as a samurai. So, the ninja told him to fight like a samurai (even though the line was complete horseshit). It was just a way for the writers to get his mask off.
@ThePandaBrawler Common misconception, Ninjas never wore black. That guy obviously is not a ninja, but a samurai that appreciates the slimming qualities of black spandex.
look, the top comments obviously just want thumbs up so they are saying stupid shit that they know little kids will thumbs up. The term "Samurai" means "Warrior," in Japanese, the fact that he might appear to dress like a ninja is irrelevant. And anyways, he takes off his mask when he tells batman too, nothing dishonorable about that you toadstool fuckshit.
@TheDullahan If you studied more often you would realise that for over 1,000 years ninja were just random guys and girls that were poor or in debt that were hired by the wealthy to infiltrate and assassinate/steal to pay it off. They didn't wear pyjamas or train in secret villages, they would get a job as a servant and walk in wearing regular clothes, usually they would die after completing their objective.
The Ninja's name is Kyodai Ken. He trained with Bruce during his world travels. When Kyodai Ken first fights Batman, He finds out Bruce's indetity because they have the same fighting style.
If Samurai don't hide behind masks...then that would make history wrong since they did wear masks to frighten their enemies and convince them they were demons.
A ninja or shinobi was a covert agent or mercenary of feudal Japan specializing in unorthodox arts of war. The functions of the ninja included espionage, sabotage, infiltration, and assassination, as well as open combat in certain situations. The ninja, using covert methods of waging war, were contrasted with the samurai, who had strict rules about honor and combat.
The shinobi proper, as a specially trained group of spies and mercenaries, appear in the Sengoku or "warring states" period, in the 15th century, but antecedents may have existed in the 14th century, and possibly even the 12th century (Heian or early Kamakura era).
In the unrest of the Sengoku period (15th–17th centuries), mercenaries and spies for hire arose out of the Iga and Kōga regions of Japan, and it is from these clans that much of later knowledge regarding the ninja is inferred. Following the unification of Japan under the Tokugawa shogunate (17th century), the ninja descended into obscurity, being replaced by the Oniwabanshū body of secret agents.
A number of shinobi manuals, often centered around Chinese military philosophy, were written in the 17th and 18th centuries, most notably the Bansenshukai (1676).
By the time of the Meiji Restoration (1868), the tradition of the shinobi had become a topic of popular imagination and mystery in Japan. Ninja figured prominently in folklore and legend, and as a result it is often difficult to separate historical fact from myth. Some legendary abilities include invisibility, walking on water, and control over natural elements.
As a consequence, their perception in western popular culture in the 20th century was based more on such legend and folklore than on the historical spies of the Sengoku period.
I remember this episode! At the end of the fight, Batman tried to save Kyodai from falling into the lava, but Kyodai chose death before being dishonored again.
@Brittonsp Brave and the Bold didn't screw up anything they are just as cannon as any other Batman cartoon. I take it you never seen Adam West's portrayal of Batman in the old tv-show It's exactly like Brave and the Bold actually I think Brave and the Bold is better. There are more than one version of Batman you have to remember that
They are ninja in fighting style, but I belive that just before the clip starts Bruce turns down a compliment on being an excellent ninja saying that he prefers the philosophy and morals of the samurai, leading the bad guy to taunt him to remove his mask.
@ShadowJ20 Are you sure? I can kinda remember that Bats was getting his ass whooped and robin had to come in and save him, then Kyodai Ken retreated. I remember that happening for some reason.
My god. I know it's Bruce Wayne beneath the mask, but... It's like they cut off Batman's head and glued Bruce's head onto it instead. This... it feels wrong to see Batman in costume without his mask.
if you were actually a fan, you'd know that Batman sees himself as a Samurai.
episode end:
"Sensei Yoru: If you see Batman, tell him I have great respect for him.
Bruce Wayne: Why? He's as much a ninja as Kyodai was.
Sensei Yoru: Not so. Batman offered to help his adversary, and a lesser man would have used the secrets of the Onemuri touch against his opponent. Batman is the essence of samurai, Wayne-san. You would do well to remember that.
I realize the animation doesn't look very fluid in retrospect, but this show had some groundbreaking aspects to it, including painting over a black background to achieve a darker look than other animation. It also combined modern and retro decor, had great voice acting, and wrote stories that in some cases were much more nuanced than the original comics.
altho, yes, bat-manboobs look much better with the cape on.
When Batman means he'd rather be a Samurai he's referring to there sense of honor. Batman didn't use the technique and he offered to save the Ninja at the end.
Bruce's master says "If you see Batman tell him I have great respect for him."
Bruce - "Why? He's a ninja as much as Kyodai was"
Bruce's Master - "Not so Batman offered to help his adversary and the lesser man would've used the knowledge of the ol memory touch against his opponent. Batman is the essence of Samurai, Wayne Son."
wait did i miss something when did batman become Samurai, knew he was a ninja but never a samurai.

@Fektthis chivalry is to be respected !
.
WTF did you think, that just any bum from the street can enter such high orders. Do you honestly believe that today it's any different?
.
knights/cavaliers were trained from childhood in arts of war and social etiquette . preordained to become knights.
.
Do you really think we would have German shepherds today if just any lame dog was mixed into the gene pool? OF COURSE NOT.
.
Bruce carries the genes of an elite family and an elite moral code.

The one time when you're ABSOLUTELY NOT supposed to take off your mask is when you're in Japan. CAMERAS FFS!!!

They are ninja in fighting style, but I belive that just before the clip starts Bruce turns down a compliment on being an excellent ninja saying that he prefers the philosophy and morals of the samurai, leading the bad guy to taunt him to remove his mask.

Didn't Robin whoop Kyodai Ken ass earlier in this Episode? I can't video that video clip anywhere.
DX5K 5 months ago
@DX5K Robin wasn't in this episode. He was in the other one. And no Robin can't beat Ken.
ShadowJ20 5 months ago
@ShadowJ20 Are you sure? I can kinda remember that Bats was getting his ass whooped and robin had to come in and save him, then Kyodai Ken retreated. I remember that happening for some reason.
DX5K 5 months ago
@DX5K Batman didn't get beat up. He just got gassed by Ken. Robin then throws a batarang, then Ken leaves.

Batman: Then what's a fuckin Oni Mask huh!?!?!?
InfernoXRonin 5 months ago
My god. I know it's Bruce Wayne beneath the mask, but... It's like they cut off Batman's head and glued Bruce's head onto it instead. This... it feels wrong to see Batman in costume without his mask.

BATMAN was a ninja not samurai! y is does he liv in the darkness and do stealth attacks
hush87u 6 months ago
@hush87u
if you were actually a fan, you'd know that Batman sees himself as a Samurai.
episode end:
"Sensei Yoru: If you see Batman, tell him I have great respect for him.
Bruce Wayne: Why? He's as much a ninja as Kyodai was.
Sensei Yoru: Not so. Batman offered to help his adversary, and a lesser man would have used the secrets of the Onemuri touch against his opponent. Batman is the essence of samurai, Wayne-san. You would do well to remember that.
Bruce Wayne: [bows] Domo-arigato, Sensei. "

@fullfist lol ok nerd my bad but yh he has honour n codes of a samurai and stealth from his ninja training wha eva me nah care
hush87u 6 months ago
@fullfist Yeah, I like to say that the samurai is Feudal Japan's answer to a European knight, while the ninja is the equivalent of a Mafia hit man.

Hiding behind a mask isn't necessary for Kyodai because He already knows who Batman is.

I thought he was a ninja
narutofan9tf 8 months ago
But if he's a samurai why is he dressed as a ninja? And if he's actually a ninja how can we see him?

I realize the animation doesn't look very fluid in retrospect, but this show had some groundbreaking aspects to it, including painting over a black background to achieve a darker look than other animation. It also combined modern and retro decor, had great voice acting, and wrote stories that in some cases were much more nuanced than the original comics.
altho, yes, bat-manboobs look much better with the cape on.

Where the hell are their swords? Samurai had Swords.
101FallingRock 11 months ago
When Batman means he'd rather be a Samurai he's referring to there sense of honor. Batman didn't use the technique and he offered to save the Ninja at the end.
Bruce's master says "If you see Batman tell him I have great respect for him."
Bruce - "Why? He's a ninja as much as Kyodai was"
Bruce's Master - "Not so Batman offered to help his adversary and the lesser man would've used the knowledge of the ol memory touch against his opponent. Batman is the essence of Samurai, Wayne Son."
