The horn is an exponential horn with a rectangular cross-section. That is about all it has in common with the horn used on the Thunderbolt sirens. To produce a high-intensity signal using compressed air, you have to use a horn to convert the high-velocity, low-pressure chopped air stream into a low-velocity, high-pressure air stream to match the acoustic impedance of the surrounding air. Without the horn, you'd hear a "pfffft" sound.
I am impressed...most people dont get the whole resonant thing. I have wanted to replicate Teslas frequency generator to experiment with resonance..some crazy stuff
@Atmosfear1337 , For the 100'th time ..No... This was specially made for NASA, a thunderbolt projector is half the size of this horn. This horn is over 7 feet tall.
@noname69690 , To crack or shatter glass you must match the glass resonance frequency plus you need to produce about 140dB of that resonance frequency facing the glass directly. The resonance frequency of glass also varies, that's determined by the quality of the glass itself, its thickness, shape, temperature, etc.,.
@shimrra , The exhaust port balances the vibration of the diaphragms inside the power chamber, If I install any type of restriction or muffler, the horn will not blow...Tried it already :-)

That is the loudest LOW horn I've ever heard! Do you know if there is a louder horn anywhere in the world that is at least as low as this one or is this it?
What happens when you stand 10 feet in front of that thing when it goes off? Does your internal organs vibrate at the same decibels and you implode? =D
@TehButterflyEffect , Gas mileage.... Plus all the rear section of this car has been sectioned and cut to raise the rear floor to make room for all the air compressors, air tanks, locomotive horns, etc, etc. I would not want to hack up an expensive car. I'm glad you like the horn.
So Mike, let's say you were standing 100 feet in front of this horn, with the horn facing you. Let's also say, next to this horn, was a Thunderbolt 1000 with a blower running on chopper level 3, also facing you. The Thunderbolt would not rotate. Would the Thunderbolt drown out this horn or vice versa?
@Thewoog34 , I also have a thunderbolt, The thunderbolt seems louder because it has a higher frequency output, but the NASA horn kills the thunderbolt when it comes to its raw power that you feel all over your body! Remember this horn was used to see if the vibrations could destroy a satellite or a space shuttle! Now that's power1
@BIGMIKESOCAL You have a Thunderbolt? Do you have a blower with it too? If you've healed up enough since your injury you should make a video showing it! You don't even have to turn it on cause the town might not like that...
Hey mike Found your post on some horn and whistle blog I read about the new 27 foot servohorns they got there, bet you would love to get your hands on one of those, what is the differance in a servohorn this horn and a diaphone is the nasa horn not the same thing as a diaphone?
@manga12 , There is only one of those 27 foot horns, and it is not for sale at any price (I offered), Which is a good thing since I don't know where I would store it if I did own it. The difference between this horn a and a diaphone is that a diaphone uses a piston that goes back and forth in a chamber to produce sound (very efficient), The NASA horn has 2 vibrating diaphragms on made of titanium, a the other one is made of tungsten.
How many db is this horn? is it louder than a ships horn? Can this horn hurt your ears from more than 500ft away? Which kind of horn is the loudest ever built, and how loud?
Wow! Great sounding horn! Fantastic echoes! How does this compare, volume-wise,to the Kahlenberg S-120 piston horn? Also, what's that brief high-pitched squeak just before the main tone? Air valve opening? I play trumpet , alto horn and valve trombone; wish I could get the volume some of these horns get(haha). That's probably also why I like these ship/train/other horn vids so much!
@BillC518 , this is much much louder than the Kahlenberg S-120. The design of this horn is somewhat different than the conventional train or ship horn, This sounds off at much higher air pressures between 250-500psi! The squeak you hear at the beginning of each honk is the exhaust port equalizing the pressure in front anf rear section of the diaphragm.
Do you know how loud it is? I think it may be ~180dB @ 1m in front of this beast. What do you think? - Sorry for very bad english, I'm from Czech Republic (You can't imagine how hard it is to get some horns in there)

jairokg 10 months ago
@jairokg , Here in SoCal there really is no dB per say, but the Vehicle code reads "Every motor vehicle, when operated upon a highway, shall
be equipped with a horn in good working order and capable of
emitting sound audible under normal conditions from a distance of not
less than 200 feet, but no horn shall emit an unreasonably loud or
harsh sound." A train or ship horn is considered emitting unreasonably loud and harsh!
