  • the psp2 is going to preform better have better battery life be cheaper look nicer in graphics and hardware mite as well get the psp2

  • whats the point in a pandora? serious question?

  • @Exesta You're either a complete fucking retard, or a terrible troll.

  • @phadedlife why am I? what i've said is true

  • When is this coming out.

  • @liberty211662 It was already out when you asked, the first 4000 have started shipping, the parts are already on order for the 2nd 4000. Since most of the parts used in the Pandora are Cellphone parts there is a long lead time for their delivery as companies bump back small orders for the massive orders from companies like Nokia, Samsung, Apple, Palm, etc...

  • What will the final pandora product look like what colors will it come in?

  • @HardKore5250

    Matte black.

  • no more of 200 great handle, but still old games

  • Half of me says "$330 portable gaming machine? WTF?!"

Then the other half says, "$330 DS-size laptop? Hellz yes!"

If I can scrounge up the money, I'll definitely get one, if only to support the idea. I just hope it wouldn't be obsolete by the time it comes...

  • If only it was thinner...

  • @EaRenDeL Id rather it not be. Tired of all this flimsy crap everyone comes out with that I can break by dropping it 2 feet.

  • only if the screen were bigger, but then there would my no space for the speakers

  • the system looks horrible but the games are good

  • Sweet with Iphone and this I have the most powerful handhelds to do everything!!

  • gahh READ THE FUCKING DESCRIPTION. IT'S PANDORA, the game console??! It's not a playstation portable, nor a nintendo dualscreen.

  • when does it come out?

  • @joepamely123

    Rofl, you sure are oblivious.

  • @HeadphoneHalo joepamely123 really knows how to aggrivate people.

  • A modded DS? PSP?

Once you buy a product, you can edit the appearance in any way. It's YOUR product.

  • no, its a new opensource handheld... ;-)

  • I told that to a retard because he thought it was a modded PSP/DS

    Wow, he's so retarded =O

  • why is everyone whining i would totally pay 330 for it. its the most powerful handheld gaming pc in existence and i would rather have this than a laptop cause this can just go in your pocket when you are done

  • I would too, except I wish it had better games. How about Call of Duty. Super Mario. Even Pokemon! All it has is casslevania, quake, and like 3 other unknown games.

    Otherwise, it's pretty cool

  • @Southparknscrubs

You do realize it can play ANYTHING as long as you can find an emulator for it? It can play fuckin' N64 games. My old DESKTOP had problems playing N64 games.

  • This device is gonna be around for a lonnnng time since its expandable has multiple card ports from SD, Micro, mini sd, etc its a game machine and a computer its gonna rule!

  • It can play certain N64 games. I think Mario 64 is working, but slowly. They've said that due to certain 'tricks' used by GoldenEye and Perfect Dark, those games might never run.

It can play all PS1 games, IIRC.

  • what about the keys to light up in the dark damn this system is everything touch screen even! I wonder if its multi touch will doesn't have to since it has stylus!

  • The keys don't glow in the dark. They were considering it at one point, but it wasn't put in.

It doesn't have multi-touch, it's a standard resistive touchscreen that works with one finger or one stylus at a time. (or one pencil)

  • the keys are back lite

  • No, they were also considering that, but did not implement it.

The keymat is opaque, but there's a pad on the motherboard labelled "kpbl" for "keypad backlight", in case a hacker wants to add one.

  • they just said it on feb 8th that it would be back lite

  • Where?

  • sweet you can run every emulator play movies, listen music this does it all even install programs sweet!

  • but it's thick as hell

  • @ChayDX I know! I thought this was gonna cost like $500 or more for this beauty! I was shocked when I found out that it only costs $330 for one!

  • @ChayDX most power? it looks less capable then a netbook, and even if it is more powerful then a DS or PSP, theres no developer support for modern games.

  • @Exesta Because there is a massive homebrew community coming from the GP2X / Wiz and Dingoo communities, not to mention all the devs for ARM based Linux distros that are on most phones these days.

Who cares that yo can't get a crappy big publisher title like Madden 2011, this does every console up to the PS1, it'll do any game for the GBA, N64 and PSP support are in development. It can also run pretty much any linux software, as well as most old OSs like Amiga, Apple and Atari Computer systems,

  • Is this thing worth the price? I hear its around $330. I was thinking about getting a netbook instead but I would rather have something that is good for gaming

  • I think it has the highest utility + controls / price ratio of any pocket-sized device.

But it's not shipping yet, they're still getting production rolling. You should probably buy like a cheap netbook and come back for this later.

  • Thanks :) Well I was thinking about getting a netbook or some other portable device for christmas, I'm just looking around until then.

  • awesome

    just awesome

  • for what this thing does its a little pricey

  • Is there a release date for the Pandora?

It seems like it's been delayed quite a few times...

  • They're hoping to ship the first 4000 this year. The mold for the case is still in progress, and I believe the motherboard is getting a preliminary CE / FCC radiation test today.

  • Yeah it's about NDS-sized.

  • yeah I'm sure he just has really small hands lol.

  • well he's a hardware engineer, he has to have small hands.

    THAT PRUVEZ IT

  • It's the size of a DS.

  • no it's an u.m.p.c with a D pad, and by the way THEY DID NOT INVENT THE ULTRA MOBILE PC.

  • Who cares if they didn't invent the UMPC concept? Apple didn't invent the computer, and their computers are excellent.

  • because they seem to love refering to as THE MOST POWERFUL HAND HELD IN THE WORLD and it will be able to run quake 3 wow!!! fire fox wow!!! when that something most any umpc can do.I'm curious to see what ''games'' will be available for this powerful ''system''.

  • Can you show me a better open source handheld? Do you even know the hardware specs for this system?

  • Also the battery is around 10 or 12 hours, whereas UMPCs have a shorter battery life, are bigger, and cost more.

The games will be mostly homebrew and emulators. I intend to make a racing game for it someday. Or something.

  • also your retarded if you buy this, but then again your fucking retarded either way.

  • I'm retarded because it's the size of a DS? Okay then.

  • and your retarded for posting ''its ds size'' 3 INCHES from another post telling me it's ''ds size'' and what ''ds'' do have you seen that can fit a full key board between the d pad and buttons?

  • So, my brain function is chemically impaired because I failed to see a YouTube comment?

"what ''ds'' do have you seen that can fit a full key board between the d pad and buttons?"

None, because Nintendo doesn't make DS's with keyboards on them.

  • And by the way, open source is Jesus.

  • ha looser.. what about a dream cast emulater. if you dont like it keep your DS you fuk wit. we dont want you in our community

  • and I never said you were mentally retarded, I just said retarded, your perception is hindered in some way, and that's my point the key board wouldn't fit if they did, but this thing has one there does it not? so how is it ds size if the ds couldn't possibly accommodate that key board? take your time.

  • You do realize manufacturers can make keys whatever size they want, right?

  • The dimensions of the thing are similar to that of a DS. To claim otherwise is to simply be lying.

The Pandora obviously has a keyboard on it. To claim otherwise is to simply be lying.

Put two and two together and...

  • I think an Xbox 360 controller (cable version) would do the job. Did you tried ? It has a usb port and works on windows if you installl the drivers that are easy tofind.

  • hey did you make this?

  • It's a group of guys who have been making it over the course of a couple years now.

I think MWeston did the circuit board design and some hardware stuff.

  • HELOLO ROFL !!!1

  • do you guys think this is woprth buying or should i get a psp go? i dont really play the nes games and ps1 games soo i dont really see an need for me in buying this but if it is powerfull enough to support ps2 games then thats just AWSOME so what do you guys think, this or the psp go?

  • If you're hoping for PS2 emulation on the Pandora, don't get your hopes up. Even if somebody manages to port/develop a PS2 emulator on the Pandora, chances are it won't run fast enough to make games playable.

As for whether or not to get the PSP Go over this - they are different devices intended for different purposes. Pandora is meant to encourage open-source development, while the PSP Go is meant to play PSP games. Check out the PSP game library! If you see games you like, then go buy a PSP!

  • hmmm yeah i guess your right. but i really like this system AND the psp go i cant really decide. is this going to be available in stores? if it is then i will probably get but if not the go it is.

the go in overall design looks more atractive imo but this is preety cool but looks kinda too much like the ds system, and bit bigger than any other portable system. BUT i like nice and compact devices, soo im kinda stuck LOL ne ways thanks for the info RagolSlayer ;D

  • No, the Pandora is only available by pre-order since they don't keep any in stock.

It really depends on what you want to do with it. This has a touchscreen and full keyboard, as well as the full Firefox 3 web browser. PSP probably doesn't have any of that, but it is smaller and easier to buy.

You'll have to decide for yourself.

  • Sounds like you be happier with a PSP GO. The Pandora is not for everyone IMO.

  • psp go is lame. this = insta-street cred

  • AMAZING :-O

  • Someone is working on a PSP emu, but it probably won't run fullspeed for some games.

The PSP seems to handle things a bit differently than the PS2 and N64, it might be easier to emulate.

My point was that native Pandora games will have access to hardware about original-Xbox spec. Emulation, being necessarily slower, will be limited to around PS1.

  • there IS a psp emulator, but is only for the developers of Sony

  • Well that's totally different.

Somebody on the forums is programming a PSP emu.

The Dreamcast emu [miniDC?] is also going well from what I've heard, it might very well be full-speed at some point.

  • It will have emus for PS1 and anything earlier than PS1.

N64 / Dreamcast are possible, but don't count on them.

Anything after N64 is basically impossible, since they are difficult even for computer to emulate once you get past the N64.

  • Just a note,but a usual pc can run a wii emulator.

It all just depends on how similar the two pieces of hardware are to each other.

  • That's .. interesting.

How do you mean by "usual"?

  • As in one you can by from a store for less than a thousand dollars.

  • well, it can run on at 720p perfectly on a E8400 @ 4GHz,, 4GB Ballistix DDR2 RAM,

and a XFX GTX 260 216 Black Edition card.

nice, but not exactly super advanced.

  • I think emulation is mostly in the CPU. What's an E8400, a Core 2 Duo or Quad? Or Extreme?

  • 3.0ghz core2duo.

    Costs about 170$.

  • um... buying a pc from a store and building your own with a $1000 dollar budget and getting good deals on parts from newegg/other sites are COMPLETELY different. you can save a ridiculous amount building your own pc, and you would still end up hitting a very high mark making your own pc that would run a playable 720p wii emulator w.o any overclocking. finding a pc in the market for retail at sub $1000 to do all that is a bit pushing it. btw its about 90% playable at that point, so almost perfect

  • lol kinda like my last comment, 500 characters exactly. but anyways, i see what ur saying, but spending +$1000 on a pc to play a wii emulator? unless you're using the pc for other games/purposes, there'd b no point. the cheapest dell xps desktop is $1000, and no where meets your requirements, let alone the true requirements are a bit higher for 100% playability. but yes wii emulators are cool =]

  • No.

It's as powerful as an XBox, but since emulation cuts your CPU power to around 20% at best, there's no way it could an Xbox emu at playable speeds.

  • ...also, windows movie maker has basic editing capability....it will help you cut out unwanted footage

  • windows movie maker a good video editor?

    BAHAHAHHAHAHAHA

  • hehe, I should've known better to mention Windows when I heard your Pandora ran on Linux.

  • Also, hehe, i'm so bad with computers but I'm better with art!

if you like sci fi stuff goto: w w w. Evarcha. Deviantart. com /gallery

    Without spaces, naturally.

I am currently showing my g.f your Pandora, we're both excited :D

  • this is interesting...is it a D.S thats been modded?

  • No, it's a completely different console.

It has 256 MB of RAM, a graphics chip on par with the original Xbox, and it runs Linux.

Youtube is weird about links, but it's called the openpandora and they have a dot / org site, and their wiki is at pandorawiki which is also a dot / org.

  • Remember that this is a protorype!

Don't judge it after look just yet.

  • It will look a lot better when it isn't a prototype.

  • hellollo

  • is it coming out in the u.s.?

  • 2:30 what is that sensor? what is it for?

  • It detects when the lid is closed so you can suspend the processor or turn of the display or both.

  • WOW! but why not use a mechanical switch instead?

  • ima get me one of these

  • looks like he doesn't control the D-pad correctly, or the d-pad is low quality.

  • prototype...

  • I would love to buy this. But I don't have the money to buy this as I am still a student. But I really appreciate everyone who is involved in this project.

I Hope to get it someday and sleep with it.

  • this is that thing i saw and liked that can play all roms or something like that, right?

  • why would you even think that (honest question)

  • Comment removed

  • I really want it, but £200! I'll wait a bit.

  • Yeah, i know this could never happen as it would suck battery life.. but has anybody else heard of the NVIDIA Ion platform?

Nvidia ion + Pandora = orgy

  • The Ion platform draws 25W versus the Pandora's 2W. It sounds cool but sure seems like it is far, far away from anything handheld.

  • Comment removed

  • Looks like a nice device, but how exactly are you going to play those games on it? Aside from having to install windows first (comes with linux), you'll have to carry around a gamepad at least, and for a lot of games actually a seperate mouse and keyboard (if you can even connect them) because you're really not going to be comfortably playing using the builtin keyboard...

That's pandora's strenght, being designed with gamecontrols in mind.

  • Install windwos??? You're kidding! Windows would HAVE to be ported off the x86 hardware FIRST... it'll never happen.

  • @TheAmSanEagle

I replied to lolersss who was saying the compal mid was better... He wanted to play all kinds of windows games on that thing, but it also has linux installed by default. It should in theory however be able to run windows, although I agree with TazG2000 it's probably not as powerful as Lolersss is expecting.

  • No, you dumbass. The Pandora doesn't run on X86 architecture. Running Windows is NOT POSSIBLE - especially not in theory.

  • He was talking about the compal MID which has linux by default and uses an x86 CPU.

  • to the guy raving about some silly intel MID, I don't think you realize how the specs stack up. That machine is not at all as powerful as Pandora.

x86 handhelds as a whole are very impractical, as is the prospect of playing the type of games you have listed on a handheld in the first place, regardless of the cpu architecture.

I think what you're really looking for is a small footprint desktop pc.

you can use whatever you need, but waving around your intel propaganda won't sway anyone here.

  • Humans is not lame! That game was awesome!

I didn't know there was a Genesis port, though. I played the PC version.

  • Well it's kinda obvious, isn't it?

  • Dude, you should prepare a few scripts for your demonstration vids so you can launch different apps quickly. What was with the long wait to launch the PSX emu, for example?

Anyway, it's all looking nice. Definitely still some unfinished stuff in there that needs to be fixed, but it's better to take your time to get these kind of things out before actual release. :)

  • We don't want him to waste even more time on making videos and thus delaying the release further...

  • Get the facts:

    openpandora. org

    pandorawiki. org

    Threw this together for fun:

    DS 66Mhz OC 100MHz

    PSP 222MHz OC 333MHz

    Pandora 600MHz OC 900MHz

  • I'm not sure I totally understand what the pandora IS. It seems like its a small computer made almost specifically to run emulators. I don't know though can somebody clarify what it actually is for?

  • it's an open source computer made for games. either emulated, written by a third party, or by you if you have the skills.

  • its not just for games. It has wifi and will run internet browsers great. It is like a very small linux laptop with gaming controls.

  • it can easily run java/flash, speedsk8r010, please don't fill youtube with false statements that you just plucked out of the air. The pandora is way more powerful than the iphone and well suited to apps like video/flash.

  • Well, you can't exactly run Flash EASILY on 900 Mhz - some files will definitely stutter or run a bit slow. But it'll run plenty fast for most Flash files anyway.

Oh, that's right... the thing has an ARM processor, is there really a version of Flash that works with ARM processors?

  • Im pretty sure theres not a version of Flash that works with ARM processors

  • There is flash for nokia internet tablets and they have ARM processors

  • That's what GNU Gnash is for. Gnash is an open source, reverse engineered version of Flash intended to provide support for computers and operating systems without the latest version of Adobe's Flash Player, or any Flash at all.

  • Wrong my N95 8GB which has an ARM CPU supports flash/flv both online and offline. Youtube videos play very smoothly.

  • Dunno who you're talking to, but as long as Firefox and Mplayer / VLC / Totem is ported, YouTube will work to some extent.

There's a Firefox script you can add that plays FLVs in a video player plugin like Mplayer or VLC.

  • I would buy this!

  • Cool Beans

  • Sonic3D is the shit but anyways do you know what the final price will be?

  • you added a D after sonic 3 :P jk

  • Comment removed

  • $330

  • See kids, this is what a REAL handheld looks like. Get a good look because I'm sure mommy won't buy you anything other then a DS.

  • CANT WAIT!!! How much will it cost?

  • $330, it's on preorder

  • Everyday I'm looking in the forums and looking through my email too see if i can order some leftovers from the 1st batch!

  • You can order some leftovers, but you have to do it within the next 6 days

  • I don't speak english. Can you explain me what is that engine??

  • Nice snappy little quote there. Oh wait I mean.. you know nothing.

  • There are? Sure ;)

  • Like what? Name one other in its class. I am not aware of a single faster palm computer currently in production with 10 hours of battery life and under $400.

  • are you really so stupid or are you just attempting to be?

  • Can you put a computer in your pocket? Does a computer have a built-in touch screen? Does a computer have a built-in gamepad?

  • Yes, yes, & yes.

  • i also have to answer yes to all of wyndclaw's questions. the Pandora is a computer.

it's also 10x faster than a nDS, and i do believe that is considered "Smashing" it.

  • Comment removed

  • you do realize you don't need the parts to play the games most of it is Texas Instruments. its perfectly legal to play roms as long as you own the actual games.

  • the touchscreen is probly from someone like giant-plus, and the adapter is for power...it will have a Pandora power supply when it's done.

it's made from parts you can buy, so it's not exactly a problem.

  • You absolutely CAN just download Roms for games to play in emulators. I have thousands of them that work on my PC. The emulators just need to be re-compiled for the ARM processor used in the Pandora to be compatible. All aboard the failtrain TOOT TOOT.

  • DudeHuge: Are you stupid? There is no parts from sony or nintendo at all, learn your facts before speaking dumb fool. it uses a omap3x board etc nothing from nintendo or sony at all its built from scratch by the pandora team, this is a open source handheld for gamers, also nothing for noobs like you. I couldent care less if you like it or not.

  • You are too stupid for words. Here is a video directly refuting your claim. It shows the Pandora right next to a DS. Look at how much bigger the Pandora screen is. We know each and every piece of hardware inside this device. It's an open machine created by a community of people smarter than you. This same exact screen can be seen in the ArchOS 605. You know nothing.

  • Quit trolling and get the hell out of here. You've been beaten at every point.
